preface: so im at the grove act 1, and mol is just gone.

bit of a story:

just got to the grove. do the general route from that area: recruit wyll > talk to the fraud ring seller.

(now, heres where the problem started i think).

im a rogue and passed the dex/chr check and confronted them pickpocketing me.

i was even able to grab the kid, but the cutscene just made the kid runaway.

right after this, i went to their hidey hole > talked to mol and he said some thing like "good job for finding out this area".

and i think he said, "thats it, leave now" (i just talked to him again right after finishing the initial encounter).

after this, one long rest hes just gone. i saved arabella, i saved the harpee kid as well, and both of the kids were like "go meet mol, or mol would be thankful), but mol is just gone and doesnt reappear anymore.

so hes just gone right for the entirety of act 1 right? i guess ring of protection gone as well? im 19 hours in and i think this whole incident would bring back to hour 8 or something lol (im still in the act 1, so im asking if Mol is really gone in act 1???)

JusticeofTorenOneEsk

FYI, Mol is a girl.

If you pissed her off for some reason (like not leaving the hideout fast enough when she told you to go, or doing something that she considers to be mistreating the tiefling kids, like not going easy on Silfy) then she may still be mad at you even though you also helped some of the other kids now.

As far as where she is, I think sometimes she leaves the hideout in order to go tattle on characters she doesn't like to the adult refugees? I'm not 100% sure though, since I usually stay on her good side haha. I would look around the Grove though, as far as I know the only way she would disappear completely is if you raid the Grove and she gets killed by goblins.

potionsFORmana

ive played like 4 times already, and this is my first time making her mad lol.

all ive done is pretty much caught the kid stealing and not leaving fast enough on the cave (cus i clicked talk to her again right after the inital talk, kinda stupid imo lol)

shes somewhere in the grove

again, in all my playthroughs, ive always been on her good side as well and only have known her being in the kids cave. no idea where she is now lol.

ps. just to clarify, i can still access the cave, and have saved all the kids that i know.. so yea. kinda weird that shes gone quick after pissing her off from talking again lol

Does the character creator already have a gold eye-makeup option (or equivalent), or do I need a mod? I can't recall whether the CC has a glossy option for eye-makeup (or equivalent), or if that's exclusively for lips.

Asking here to save myself some time before deciding on a mod lineup.

Hey. I'm just now learning I have screwed up a few things in the Underdark that I won't be able to take back, because I'm already way deep into Act 2. It sucks, but I can live with missing out on some of them... except for maybe one.

It turns out I destroyed the Noblestalk mushroom those dwarves were talking about. And it's apparently tied to a quest with Shadowheart. Is that mushroom the only way to initiate that quest?

millionsofcats

The "quest" that the Noblestalk unlocks isn't really a quest. It's more like a little bit of extra foreshadowing for her main quest. You get a cutscene and your quest log will update to tell you to find something related to it, but it's something that you can/will find anyway as you do her main quest. You aren't really missing anything vital.

There is one caveat to this, which I can't explain without some spoilers: She has a secret point system that determines what decision she makes during an important moment in her personal quest. Giving her the Noblestalk counts as a point. However, (a) you can earn enough points without it, and (b) if you don't earn enough points there are still ways to ensure either decision is made.

BarnabyJones21

"Tied to a quest" is technically true, but it's nothing notable. You can largely hit all of the same story beats without the questline, and there's no loot associated with it. Realistically you're missing next to nothing.

I wouldn't worry about it at all.

Druid - Circle of Restarting

Having trouble with a fight in act 3, any tips? It's the first fight where I feel a bit stuck, tried it 4 times so far and only got close once. Act 3 spoiler:

It's Auntie Ethel for the quest to save Vanra. My first two turns are just hitting mushrooms and throwing the Hag's Bane at her, but then I get overwhelmed by all the adds and illusions and insect plagues. I can't take the mushrooms out before the fight, it starts immediately when I go upstairs.

It helps to take out the adds in the other room of the basement first (if you can take them out with nonlethal it's "better" since they're not evil just under the hag's control), then you only have to deal with the Hag and the mushrooms.

What is Dark Urge (no spoilers)? Did I miss things of import for choosing original Tav?

Just found out there is a Dark Urge playthrough, just right after my Tav has finally gets over the worst section of being a solo necromancer / spore wizard and now began his powertrip to solo everything with his summons

I kinda have urges to reset, but after everything I've been through to get to lvl 10...I just don't know...i also not sure if Dark Urge actually is suitable for him, he is a young handsome (thanks to mod) wholesome boy outside his necromancy, not edgy guy at all

insanity76

Dark Urge would basically be the only customizable character to go with if not for Larian adding the custom Tav choice which allows you to create a completely blank slate in your mind for your character's backstory. Dark Urge i.e. Durge is fully customizable (except the background which is locked in to the exclusive "Haunted One") with the character woven directly into the main plot. They also get a few exclusive cutscenes and a very nice cloak, as well as a couple of optional abilities depending on your choices.

College of Sass Bard

The Dark Urge is a playable origin that doesn’t show up in the game if you play as a Tav (or as any other origin character). Their default race/class is dragonborn and storm sorcerer, but you can customize their appearance/race/class as with any other tav. Playing the Dark Urge adds some new interactions, quests and cutscenes in the game, so it can offer you a slightly different experience than playing a tav.

The Dark Urge’s backstory is gradually revealed as you progress. At the start of the game, they have amnesia and the only thing they know about themselves is that sometimes they get overwhelmed by a very strong urge to kill, which they can either indulge or resist.

I would definitely advise you to finish your current run and pick the Dark Urge for your next playthrough. Having an elaborate backstory for your main would contradict the Dark Urge’s background.

I played at launch (abandoned about half way through act 3), and am thinking about another playthrough. I played a bard the first time around.

I know they added a lot to the game post launch - does anyone have any opinions on what a good class/approach would be? Not interested in an evil playthrough really.

We_Get_It_You_Vape

does anyone have any opinions on what a good class/approach would be?

What are you generally drawn to?

To give an overview on the new subclasses:

  • Path of the Giant (Barbarian): A Barbarian subclass that lets you turn Giant in size (name appropriate), enhance your weapons (also turning them into auto-returning thrown weapons), kick enemies, and suplex-style throw enemies. Really flavourful and fun subclass. Also fairly strong as a thrown-weapon subclass. I would argue Berserker is mechanically stronger for throwing, but this is more fun IMO.

  • College of Glamour (Bard): Standard Bard for the most part, but with two marquee features - Mantle of Inspiration, and Mantle of Majesty. Mantle of Inspiration is a buff you can put on allies that will give them temporary HP and will charm enemies who hit the ally with a melee attack. Mantle of Majesty is the Command spell, but charmed enemies will automatically fail their saving throw. Granted, Mantle of Majesty is limited to one cast per long rest, IIRC.

  • Death Domain (Cleric): This is a necrotic-focused Cleric. There are a number of features. You get to select an additional target on single-target cantrips. You have a channel divinity that deals bonus necrotic damage on melee attacks. You also have a once-per-turn action that allows you to make a melee attack with bonus necrotic damage. And you ignore necrotic resistance. You're probably still going to lean into Spirit Guardians like most Clerics, but it does offer some cool options for Necrotic spells. And, IMO, this feels like the most lore-appropriate starting class for Shadowheart.

  • Circle of the Stars (Druid): This is a Druid subclass that has access to "Starry Forms", which are an alternative to Wild Shape. Unlike Wild Shape, a Starry Form doesn't actually transform you, but rather gives you buffs and additional actions. Archer form gives you a bonus action ranged attack. Chalice form enhances your ability to heal allies. Dragon form passively enhances your ability to make concentration saving throws, and also gives you a bonus action dragon breath attack. IMO, Dragon form is the strongest, given the degree to which it helps you on concentration saving throws. It also gives you the ability to fly at a later level. You also get Cosmic Omens, which afford you the ability to boost ability checks, attack rolls, or saving throws. Or you can debuff enemy attack rolls or saving throws. You get a few Cosmic Omens per Long Rest, which you can use as you see fit. Because of Dragon Form, a two-level dip into Cleric can be pretty strong on any character that relies on holding concentration on spells.

  • Arcane Archer (Fighter): Similar to how the Battlemaster Fighter gets all kinds of maneuvers, the Arcane Archer gets special ranged attacks known as Arcane Shots. Each of them has a special effect that gets applied. To name a couple, Banishing Arrow basically casts Banishment (in addition to dealing the weapon damage). Or Piercing Arrow deals AOE damage to all enemies in a line. On a missed range attack, you can use a bonus action to redirect the arrow to the nearest enemy to the target (once per turn). And your arrows are considered magical, to avoid resistances. IMO, this is a really solid and fun archer class, if you value options in battle.

  • Way of the Drunken Master (Monk): The flavour of the class is that you're a drunkard who benefits from drinking alcohol, and can possibly get enemies drunk in combat. Pretty interesting concept on paper, but I can't recommend this class, as the features are very underwhelming and undertuned.

  • Oath of the Crown (Paladin): "You have sworn yourself to the ideals of civilisation, serving the laws that hold society together and preserving the order they command." This pally subclass is quite strong IMO. From level 1, you have a feature (Righteous Clarity) which will allow you to add a proficiency bonus to you or a target's attack rolls. This is a huge bonus right off the bat, that should remain effective and strong into the late game. Most of the subclass features from then on are catered around keeping your party safe. You have a Challenge ability, that will allow you to impose disadvantage on enemy attacks against your allies (with the goal of drawing aggro yourself). You have an AOE heal. You have a reaction ability that, when an ally nearby takes damage, will allow you to substitute a portion of that damage to yourself instead of your ally. You also get Spirit Guardians at Level 9. Really solid subclass overall, and fits the "tank" archetype about as well as any subclass in this game.

  • Swarmkeeper (Ranger): A Ranger subclass that allows you to choose one of three swarm types to fight by your side - bees, jellyfish, or moths. Each will help enhance your attack damage, while also affording you some utility options. Bees will push back the targets of your attacks, Jellyfish will shock the target, or Moths will blind the target. Each effect does require the enemy to fail their saving throw. You also get bonus damage on Hunter's Mark, the ability to fly, and the utility effects on your swarms get enhanced in the late game (Bees prone enemies, Jellyfish disarm enemies, and Moths Slow enemies). Not the strongest class on the damage front, but really cool for debuffing enemies.

  • Swashbuckler (Rogue): The 'pirate' archetype within the Rogue class. Can outright avoid enemy opportunity attacks, gets a bonus to initiative right off the bat, and has easier ways to deal sneak attacks, even if you don't have advantage. The signature features of the class, IMO, might be the "Dirty Tricks". You can use a bonus action to: flick your weapon at an enemy to deal damage and possibly disarm them, toss a handful of sand at an enemy to possibly blind them, or cast vicious mockery. Later on, you get a feature called Panache that can be useful for non-combat dialogue, or can be used to basically force an enemy to focus on you. Really flavourful subclass with some pretty solid features.

  • Shadow Magic (Sorcerer): A Sorcerer subclass built around darkness. You get a version of the Darkness spell that you can actually see in. You get a Shadowfell-esque dog summon. You get shadow/darkness teleportation. You also get to recover to 1 HP when your HP is reduced to 0 (once per long rest). It's not my favourite Sorcerer subclass personally, but I can see it being fun if you really want to lean into a Darkness party.

  • Hexblade (Warlock): You get some extra armour and weapon proficiencies to help with gear access, because this subclass is built around making both weapon and spell attacks. Sometimes both simultaneously. You bind a "Hexed Weapon", turning its damage magical, making it unmovable from you, and making it scale with Charisma instead of Strength or Dexterity. You also might apply "Hexblade's Curse" to targets you hit. Hexblade's Curse enhances your damage against the cursed target, and makes critical hits more easy (also gives you HP regain if you kill the target). You can cast Hexblade's Curse on enemies once per short rest, or there's a chance that your Hexed Weapon will curse a target automatically. Cursed targets who die can also be rained as an "Accursed Spectre", basically a summon that will fight for you. And, in the late game, when a cursed target attacks you, you can spend a reaction for a 50% chance that the attack is nullified. A monoclassed Hexblade is among my favourite subclasses in the game, as I love gish characters (characters who both make martial weapon attacks and cast spells).

  • Bladesinger (Wizard): The other main gish of the new subclasses. You get some armour and weapon proficiencies. Fewer than Hexblade, but still more than sufficient. The core mechanic is the Bladesong. When you invoke the Bladesong, you get a bonus to AC, movement, acrobatics, and constitution saving throws. While bladesinging, you accumulate charges depending on what you do. Casting spells will add damage charges, and making weapon attacks will add healing charges. At the Bladesong "Climax", you leap to a target location, your damage stacks dealing damage to enemies in AOE, and your healing stacks healing you and allies in AOE. Your bladesong ends on the climax. The gist is that you get tankier and more evasive as a bladesinger, you stack charges, and you end the bladesong to deal burst damage and get some healing. If you're bored of backline Wizards, this can be a really fun and powerful alternative.

With only one playthrough, there are a lot of classes and subclasses that you haven't experienced yet. I would poke through the class pages on the wiki, take a look at the various subclasses, and see if any of them jump out at you as interesting.

It can be fun to respec characters, but I personally like to respec them in a way that is still consistent with their story. For example, Wyll is definitely a warlock who uses a sword--but you could change him to Hexblade (a new subclass) for a different spin on it. You could change Shadowheart to Death Domain (a new subclass) if you wanted to keep her a cleric, but she also makes sense as a Paladin. Astarion's class isn't mentioned; if you want to keep him as a rogue, Swashbuckler is really fun (Vicious Mockery!), but I've also done him as as a Great Old One Warlock (loading him up with tadpole powers) and Swords Bard and thought they fit him well. And so on. I'd say away from multiclassing if you don't have a good grasp of build mechanics, but that still leaves you with a lot of other options.

For your player character, I might suggest Durge. Check the content warnings on it, but it is not necessarily an evil playthrough. Resist!Durge is my favorite playthrough, personally, and it adds another perspective on the story.

Any good camera / control effecting mods you folks recommend? Been at act 3 for a year now purely because the camera absolutely spazzing with any amount of elevation + controls borking out with said elevation just makes me go " life is WAY too short to deal with this" and drop the session.

Really bums me out. Played 1+2 back then, have like 90 hours on 3 since EA, loved DoS 1+2 but act 3 really breaks my limit of tolerance for Larians camera shortcomings.

Act 3 cutscenes question - thank you so much, simple google is not helping

My game skipped over Halsin's (manbear) night scene. He is treating me like romantic partner in camp, though. Will this have impact on the end of the game?

Further details: Day 3 asked for Astarion consent for Halsin; Night 3 Astarion graveyard romance. (If I load the save file, I could trigger the manbear scene on night 4). Night 4 Shart parents crying scene. Night 5 Orin. Night 6 No scene whatsoever. On a sidenote, Wyll also did not have any celebration on Day 5 after his personal quest either, that was Orin only.

I have 2 controllers and play on xbox. If I start a new game could I start it as a multiplayer game, create 2 characters, and only use the second character to experience a 2nd romance at the same time as my main romance? And can I put that second character away the rest of the time instead of keeping them in my party?

Also while I'm asking could I make the second character an origin character so that I can experience an origin playthrough but put them away whenever I don't want them in party? Or can you only put away custom characters? I probably won't do this because I'm not sure I want to miss out on a companion's dialogue but I'd like to know if it's an option in case I change my mind.

The 2nd character won't be able to romance anyone without playing as them and interacting with the romance partner enough to raise approval.

What's the point of Reverbation and Arcane Synergy in popular Gloomstalker Assassin build? Are we building up DC and reducing saving throws for some specific spell?

millionsofcats

There are a lot of different takes on the Gloomstalker Assassin, and without seeing the exact build, I'm not sure exactly how Reverberation is being used.

Arcane Synergy adds your spellcasting modifier to your weapon attacks (you might be confusing it with Arcane Acuity, which is what raises your spell save DC). The Diadem of Arcane Synergy will grant Arcane Synergy when you inflict a condition.

I'm not sure how Reverberation fits in. It is a condition and can trigger the diadem, but you would need a source of Radiant, Lightning, or Thunder damage to trigger it independently of triggering other conditions first (e.g. caustic band + ichorous gloves). The Joltshooter could do that, but people usually prefer other bows for this build. It could be that they just added Reverberation in because they could and it's a good debuff.

Or it could be that they're taking advantage of a bug? IIRC there is an issue with how missed ranged attacks are treated that inflicts a condition on the attacker, and thus can trigger Reverberation through the Boots of Stormy Clamour.

If you have a link I could take a look and see exactly how they're building it.

qustrolabe

sorry for not being specific, I mean this one. Oh okay I was just reading Arcane Synergy wrong despite being aware of Acuity too, now I understand that it just adds damage to attacks.

Source of Thunder/Lightining damage for https://bg3.wiki/wiki/Gloves_of_Belligerent_Skies is enchant from https://bg3.wiki/wiki/Drakethroat_Glaive that you put on Titanstring bow. And source of condition for https://bg3.wiki/wiki/Boots_of_Stormy_Clamour and Diadem is Ability Drain as far as I know.

I guess I need to dive deeper into hour long video of that build to understand. Maybe reducing saving throws makes special arrows more effective.

millionsofcats

OK, I see now. I thought Arcane Synergy and Reverberation were supposed to be doing something together, since those were the two features of the build that you mentioned, but there's a lot more going on.

Arcane Synergy just adds to weapon damage, which as you said is triggered by Elemental Weapon cast on your bow. You don't need Reverberation to trigger it, that is just a separate part of the build that is doing its own thing. Although it WILL trigger Arcane Synergy, it doesn't matter because you'll be constantly triggering it just with your thunder/lightning damage.

Maybe reducing saving throws makes special arrows more effective.

Yes, it does since most of them have a dexterity saving throw. Ability Drain also will if you are hitting with arrows to debuff dexterity. As I said, Reverberation is just a good debuff. It doesn't need to be doing one specific thing for you. It will also debuff for other characters' abilities that target those stats and can be used to prone and daze enemies depending on gear.

Anyone know if entering the goblin camp and starting to kill the leaders prevents astarion bite scene from happening? He hasnt comfessed to me yet, i reloaded bc i realised entering the underdark behind priestess gut's quarters makes him do that and i forgot, but we r in a DUrge co-op run, the stars scene and the him sneaking odf scene have triggered, and we left the goblin camp to long rest and got shadowheart/laezel fighting scene then immediately rested again and it was an eventless rest when i was expecting bite scene to happen. Havent released halsin or killed minthara yet. Tryna get the bite scene before the party to.... well yk.

Edit: dk if thrs a lvl factor too but we r not yet lvl 5

Entering the goblin camp doesn't prevent it from playing, but it triggers certain plot-related cutscenes that are are prioritised.

I've noticed that when I take things reeeeally slow, Astarion's bite scene triggers on the third long rest after the nautiloid (finding the boar is irrelevant). However, when I rush to the goblin camp the bite scene tends to get pushed back quite a lot, to the point where I would wonder if I'd miss it. It would always play out eventually, but I would have to clear the queue for other long rest scenes (eg. dream guardian stuff).

I suggest you spam a few long rests to see if it triggers. Otherwise, he should come clean about his condition once you start exploring the Underdark. (If you want to initiate a romance but are struggling to get the bite scene to trigger, you can still do it at the party regardless of your approval)

Edit: I just read that your friend is playing Durge, and I'd like to add that the Durge plotline tends to push back the bite scene even further, since there are several Durge-related cutscenes that are added to the queue.

Sorry but if i remember correctly doest astarion reject you if ur approval isnt high enough (i have standards) at the goblin party and im fairly certain 4 approval isnt enough (and i fear the threshold to get him to just suggest a night together past the party is even higher and thus even harder to do so without the bite). I will however try to travel around doing other things and resting as and when and hope the scene pops up. I already rewound travelling to the underdark which made him confess his vampirism, im aware mountain pass does the same thing.

There is a certain dialogue tree that gets him to agree to spend the night with you at the party. You need to pick specific dialogue options and pass a certain check at the end, though.

Here's how, for future reference.

Yea I did. But we were quite behind on rests and already started killing the camp leaders, then I made us rest a few times to catch up on scenes, even specifically left the goblin camp in case the specific camping area affected it, but the last rest was eventless which im assuming means theres no more queued scenes, unless it js needs us to rest multiple times....?

Wyll Mizora scene hasnt happened either but thats cos we havent found Karlach yet

I can't really answer your question because I've always gotten that scene before the camp, but in my last playthrough I had some empty long rests before Astarion's bite scene triggered. I did things in a different order and was worried it was bugged when I had empty long rests, but then it did end up triggering. I'm not sure what finally triggered it but I suspect if you finish up all your other act 1 stuff before triggering the party, it will happen.

If you don't get the bite scene, though, you can probably still start his romance at the party. It's not a prerequisite. It does give you a big approval boost if you choose specific options but Astarion should be able to be romanced at the party at neutral approval. It will not have any effect on the reasons he wants to have sex with you.

chariotofidiots

Oh no i know i technically can still romance him without the bite scene but especially in multiplayer its hard to get his approval up. Iirc it needs to be a 10 at least and hes at a 4 rn. Its my friends first playthrough and theyre on durge so hes the speaker for most things and that means some of the passive approval disapprovals for actions outside of direct dialogue with astarion goes to them instead of my character, so im banking on the bite scene. This does help though! I'll try to get us to do other stuff before returning and triggering the party night

The wiki says this in the notes of the Improved Divine Smite page

  • Unlike Divine Smite which consumes a Spell Slot, Improved Divine Smite improves weapon attacks without consuming additional resources.

Does that mean divine smite no longer costs a spell slot once you get the improved version or does it just mean that the improvement doesn't cost anything more than normal divine smite used to cost you?

Edit to ask wait does it also mean it doesn't use your reaction anymore either?

Edit again to ask if BG3s divine smite used to only do 1d8 with a level 1 spell slot but the devs made it 2d8 later? Because when I try to look up old reddit threads about this they all say divine smite only adds 1d8 to your weapon attacks. Nm.

millionsofcats

Improved Divine Smite doesn't improve your Divine Smite (I know, it's a confusing name). It's a separate ability that adds radiant damage to all of your melee weapon attacks for free.

Your Divine Smite remains exactly the same, doing the same damage and taking the same resources.

will-i-regret-asking

Well that's just false advertising lmao. Tyvm!

We_Get_It_You_Vape

It's not false advertising.

"Unlike Divine Smite which consumes a Spell Slot, Improved Divine Smite improves weapon attacks without consuming additional resources."

The wiki makes it clear that "Improved Divine Smite" is a passive feature that adds 1d8 radiant damage to your weapon attacks (2d8 on crits). The quoted blurb only notes that, unlike the spell Divine Smite, Improved Divine Smite does not cost any additional resources.

I will grant you that the name itself is confusing, but the wiki page lays everything out accurately.

Personally the game is a lot better playing on keyboard and mouse than with a controller, so if you love the game and plan to do more playthroughs but find the controls clunky it could be worth it. But some people like controller, if you don't mind the controller experience then there's not much reason to buy both unless you just want to own both

It would only be worth it if there are mods you want to play with that are available on PC but not PS5

We_Get_It_You_Vape

Eh, depends how much they dig the controller layout vs. KBM. Also depends on PC specs. If you have a beefy PC and greatly prefer the game on KBM, then those reasons alone might be justification enough.

Can anyone help me, im in act 1 helping rugen defend the shipment, and I'm constantly crashing in this fight, I've already had 1 playthrough lasting 90 hrs and I crashed maybe once. But on this 2nd playthrough im constantly crashing in this fight.

You mean the game is crashing? Unfortunately, it's hard to say what would/could help there without knowing what's causing the crashes.

  • Are you using any mods that could be causing the crashes?

  • Can you identify what triggers the crash? For example, I just had an issue with a specific goblin crashing the game when it was his turn in the goblin camp, and I was able to get around it by taking care of him first.

  • Did you complete your prior playthrough on patch 7? Some players are having performance issues on patch 8. You might want to report to Larian, and see if you can downgrade.

Hey, thanks for taking the time out to help me.

I seem to have fixed it now. I enabled XMP for my RAM couple of days ago since I noticed it didnt run at advertised speed. I turned it off and crashes have stopped for now. No idea why XMP would crash the game but it seems to have been an issue.

Do I need only one Level of Bard (or any class) to get the Bard dialogue options? Or do you get more as you get more Bard Levels?

One of the fun little perks of doing a jack of all trades run is the laundry list of dialogue choices you sometimes get from all the classes.

act 2 - shadow lands questionwhen i get to the military camp in the shadow lands it gives me 2 convos of "it may be too dangerous continue forward?" and then it just teleports me into a prison, no cutscene or anything is this supposed to happen?

Do you mean the Oubliette, the gruesome pit that is full of bodies underneat the prison? When you climb out you are behind the prison cells.

If that's the case, then this is supposed to happen. That road leads out of the Shadow-Cursed Lands and towards the city, but you're not supposed to leave until you complete the story in the Shadow-Cursed Lands. The way that the game developers enforce this is to have the characters explain you can't make it through the army, and then throw you in the Oubliette if you try anyway.

I might just be misunderstanding your explanation, but it sounds like a bug to me.

Can you describe this prison to me? Is it in a stone building, or are you imprisoned in the convoy's camp out in the shadowlands?

If it's the latter... I had no idea that could even happen. If it's the former, then yes, that's definitely a bug and you should try reloading. You've skipped halfway across the map, somehow.

I know there's decent 1hand weapons but is there a penalty or something to just ungabunga with a 2hander on a pure warlock hexblade? Or do people do 1handed due to rp?

We_Get_It_You_Vape

There are certain 2-handed weapons that are really solid on a pure Hexblade.

But, the best weapon you can use is Shadow Blade. Even at base level (no upcasting), 2d6 base weapon damage is really good. With upcasting, it can be as strong as 4d8 base weapon damage. There are no penalties to one-handing it (you can't even two-hand it), so that frees up your off-hand for a shield or another weapon. If you want the passives from another weapon, you can throw that into your off-hand. Or you can off-hand a shield to make yourself more beefy.

Arguably the strongest feature of Shadow Blade is its damage type. It deals psychic damage. At first blush, you may think that's not a big deal. But there's a certain item in this game that imposes psychic vulnerability on everyone around you, so long as you have the item in your inventory (not even equipped). 4d8 psychic damage averages out to 20 damage (from the Shadow Blade, without any modifiers added or anything). This moves up to an average of 40 damage, once you factor in vulnerability.

Dlinktp

Ooooh very good point. I wouldn't have thought of that, thanks a bunch!

In addition to what the other poster said some one handed weapons may provide specific buffs or allow you to cast spells that may compliment specific classes or builds.    Spellcasters or archers may carry weapons that are mainly used as a 'stat stick'

In general, one-handed weapons give you more ways to build into your defense: you can use a shield in your off-hand, or you can take a feat like defensive duellist or dual wielder (with two one-handed weapons). Of course, you might also just prefer the perks of a specific one-handed weapon for your build.

Of course, if you're not playing hexblade warlock and not in heavy armor, you might end up using one-handed weapons because you're focusing on your dexterity stat (and IIRC all but three finesse weapons are one-handed).

JusticeofTorenOneEsk

Who are you talking about? Since you say "him" and mention an Act 3 quest, I'm assuming you mean Gale, Wyll, or Astarion?

Regardless of who it is, the important question is: have you already started the romance with him? For all the Origin companions, you need to start their romance in Act 1, then get their Act 2 romance scene in Act 2, and then you will get their final romance scene in Act 3. If you didn't do all these previous steps, it is unfortunately far too late to start the romance now.

Halsin and Minthara are the only romances that you can start in Act 3.

There are some romances you can start in Act 2 (at least according to the wiki).

JusticeofTorenOneEsk

Oh interesting! I knew SH and Astarion could be started if you've already entered Act 2, by backtracking to an Act 1 map, is that what you're talking about? Or are there romances that can be started while you're actively in Act 2?

Though unfortunately even if so, that won't help OP since they're in Act 3.

I always end up getting Wyll's dancing scene in Act 2 regardless of whether I've flirted with him (or am dating someone else). I assume you can trigger the romance there, though I've never tried because I've always decided who I wanted to romance by then.

According to the Wiki it can start in Act 2 as long as you still have the "Is it just me, or have you been looking at me differently lately?"  You'll go straight to the duel scene.

But that dialogue is triggered by Act 1 events

Without mods? None, really, as this isn't really a game where a lot of focus is put on different cosmetic options. I would probably go with either the halfplate armor (medium) or chainmail (heavy), but you might have a different opinion on what's closest. I think halfplate fits the male character models more similarly to the reference images I looked up, but chainmail doesn't have the pauldrons fancier halfplate does so it's closer in that way.

Here is the wikipedia page that lists all of the armors available in the game if you want to take a look. Beware that the unique armors might have spoilers on their wiki pages because they are tied to quest rewards or areas you might not have discovered yet.

Out of curiosity, is it supposed to be possible to initiate a romance with all romanceable characters in the same playthrough? Or did I experience a bug?

More context: in my current playthrough, I'm playing a very upstanding good character who's romancing Gale. But at the tiefling party, every single character was willing to initiate romance. From the start, I only cared about getting approval with Gale. Naturally, he shares some approvals with the likes of Karlach, Wyll, and Shadowheart, so I'm not surprised I had enough approval to romance them. Lae'zel will fuck anyone so that makes sense too.

What I am surprised about is Astarion though. I've never had him in my party and never seen a single Astarion approval. He also just came right out and told our party he was a vampire within minutes of recruiting him outside the nautiloid, which I've never seen before after playing this section of the game many times. (Oddly enough, we found the exsanguinated boar and at that point he reverts to acting like his vampirism is still a secret.) Outside of that blip it feels like he just trusted my character from the start for whatever reason, but I did nothing to earn that.

Anyway, not a problem or anything, but I just thought this was cool and weird. I keep thinking I know the game's parameters and then it goes and does something new.

millionsofcats

If I'm understanding you right, what happened in your game is completely normal.

You can initiate a romance with any companion at the party as long as your approval with them is high enough. It functions as a backup of sorts, letting players start a romance in case they missed earlier chances. If you have approval with several of them it can feel almost like being presented a menu...

(Gale MIGHT be an exception? I've never tried initiating a romance with him at the party, since the weave scene is really easy to get early on.)

However, you can't initiate them all at the same party. For most of the romances, you have to follow through with a long rest scene that night; you can only do one, and if you don't follow through the romance isn't started. So for example, you can tell both Lae'zel and Astarion you'll sleep with them, but you can't sleep with both, and the romance will only start with the one you didn't stand up.

As for why you had the option to start a romance with Astarion despite probably still being stuck on neutral approval with him: That's normal too. He has character reasons for propositioning you regardless. IIRC, it's possible to miss this dialogue if you take different dialogue paths so you might just have not seen it before.

I had played this game about a year ago with a Monk and now I want to replay it, can someone suggest what I should play to get a very different play through? In my first playtrhough I also had missed Gale and the Goblin girl (forgot the name) completely, but aside from that like which class should I choose that is very different from the Monk? Something unique? Also, I would suggest any tips of things I might have missed so that I get stuff I hadn't seen in my first play through.

the Goblin girl (forgot the name)

I think you mean Minthara, who is a Drow Elf who you meet at the Goblin Camp.

Just FYI, in case you aren't already aware: Minthara was written to only be recruitable on an evil playthrough, assuming you made certain evil choices. But players kept utilising exploits to recruit her on a good-aligned playthrough too, so the devs eventually built in an official exploit so that you can always recruit her, even on a good playthrough.

Basically, you'll get a quest to kill her. But instead of killing her, you'll need to non-lethally knock her out instead. She'll then be recruitable in Act 2, assuming you do this correctly.

Of course, if you intend to make the most evil choice in Act 1 anyway (for variety), then you can just recruit her the normal way.

We_Get_It_You_Vape

Going with the Dark Urge as your origin is one surefire way to introduce variety, assuming you didn't do that the first time around. You don't even need to do an "evil" playthrough per se, though that would be even more of a substantial change if you did.

Class wise, as you know, the monk obviously focuses primarily on unarmed strikes. Flavour-wise, monk is a very unique class, so most other classes are going to feel different in that regard. Mechanically, the use of unarmed strikes obviously necessitates melee range positioning. So anything that attacks from long range will be different in that sense. But that isn't to say that there aren't other melee classes that will feel foundationally-different from monk. I'll assume that you would find a standard melee-range weapon user (who mainly uses regular melee attacks) to be too samey-feeling, so here are some options I would give:

  • Swords Bard: You can use your ranged Slashing Flourish to attack numerous enemies (or make two attacks on one enemy) using a single attack action. As a full-caster, you also can cast a variety of spells, from spells that help your allies, to spells that inhibit (or kill) the enemy. The strongest way to use Swords Bard to to grab gear that helps you stack arcane acuity (when you make weapon attacks). You start out the battle stacking arcane acuity via ranged slashing flourish. And once you've built up enough, you can cast control spells on the enemy that will have a high chance of landing. Being a high-charisma character (who has access to 'Jack of all Trades' and skill proficiencies and expertise), this makes arguably the strongest "party face" in the game.

  • Arcane Archer Fighter: This is a subclass of the Fighter class that is built around using Arcane Arrows (special arrows that make for unique attacks). Unlike how people traditionally play fighter, this subclass will typically drop STR entirely, and focus instead on DEX. The arcane shots make this class a fun ranged weapon attacker with a good amount of variety for attacking. Especially if you also collect the special consumable arrows from vendors and elsewhere in BG3.

  • Bladesinger Wizard or Hexblade Warlock: These are both fairly different from one another, but they represent the same archetype of build - something known as a "Gish". This is a D&D term (supposedly originates from Githyanki lore) that people use to describe characters that blend martial prowess with spellcasting ability. In either of these classes, you do so fantastically. Hexblade Warlock is going to be a high-charisma character (therefore a party face) that leans heavily on the Booming Blade cantrip to make melee attacks, occasionally using Eldritch Blast for ranged attacking. It will spellcast, too, but usually that will come in the form of a singular concentration-based spell in a fight (Darkness, Hunger of Hadar, etc.). It generally wants to use actions on Booming Blade. Bladesinger will likely also take Booming Blade, but it's going to be casting spells more often than Hexblade Warlock would. Bladesinger wants to do both spellcasting and melee attacking. Bladesinging also earns you a really high AC, so it's going to be fairly evasive of enemy attacks. A Hexblade Warlock will be less evasive, but it's worth noting that taking the Devil's Sight invocation will allow your Hexblade to hide and fight inside of magical Darkness (from the Darkness spell). While in darkness, enemies won't be able to make ranged attacks on you, and they'll have disadvantage on melee attacks. Conversely, as you have devil's sight, you'll have advantage on attacks you make.

  • Moon Druid: You can go with any Druid subclass, really, but I prefer Moon Druid for the number of Wild Shape forms you get. This is one of the best ways to gain a wealth of options from combat to combat. Some Wild Shapes are objectively better than others, but you can simply rotate between a number of different Wild Shapes, depending on what feels most fitting to the situation.

Beyond that, there are still so many options. Sorcerer for explosive spellcasting. Cleric for a comination of offensive and support spellcasting. Maybe you can make a Barbarian built around thrown-weapon attacks. As I said before, the Monk class is fairly unique, so many of the other classes will feel meaningfully different.

JusticeofTorenOneEsk

As far as classes, a Charisma full caster (Sorcerer or Bard) could feel very different than monk! Spell slot management can feel very different than ki point management, and you will be more likely to succeed dialogue checks that you may have failed on your last playthrough, possibly leading to different outcomes-- Bard especially has a lot of unique dialogue options. If you stuck with default classes for your companions, also none of them would have been a Sorcerer or Bard in your last playthrough either!

Playing as the Dark Urge origin is another option to make your playthrough different, particularly in Act 3. You can still customize your class and appearance, but would be playing as an Origin character so would have a character quest and an established history in the world.

Playing evil would also create major differences, if you played as a good guy on your first playthrough. Note that this is a separate choice from Dark Urge-- you can have good Dark Urges and evil Custom Characters. You can also always make evil choices at the start of the game and then redeem yourself and make good choices later, or vice versa!

And definitely focusing on different companions will give you more differences, as they will chime in with different dialogue interjections, etc. So perhaps Gale and whichever two characters were least frequently in your party during your first run? Btw, there is no goblin companion, so not sure who you're talking about there-- Sazza, I suppose? She's not a major part of the game, but definitely every little quest that you missed on your first run will make the second one feel unique!

Sunbeam has a magic scroll, which I just farm for "free" level 6 spell slots. But hoarding isn't for everyone.

Personally, my level 6 spell slots are most commonly used for upcasting whichever spell best targets a specific enemy's (or situation's) weak points. That's going to vary a lot per encounter.

Yes I meant more what non necro spell(s) to use since I get infinite necro ones. Leaning towards sunbeam but open to suggestions!

Garry-Love

Harm and Create undead are the best simply for being necro spells. The best value for the level 6 spellslot is heros feast but you can get that from a camp cleric. After that it has to be Planar Ally for basically an extra PC for the whole day or Blade Barrier for a better, giant cloud of daggers that takes up most of the battlefield. I don't remember clerics getting access to sunbeam but I've used sunbeam and blade barrier is definitely better than it.

Dlinktp

Oh huh you're right. Was sure they got sunbeam. Planar ally it is.

JusticeofTorenOneEsk

Oh, I see! I mean, honestly I think that with Heroes Feast and the necro spells you'll likely be pretty covered for the usual Death Cleric modus operandi (using your one spell slot for Heroes Feast at the top of the day, and then using Life Essence Harvest from the staff for the necro spells).

But there's no denying Sunbeam is a great damage spell-- Death cleric is already pretty good on damage, but it could be useful for when you really want to break out a powerful AOE, especially when fighting enemies that are immune to poison/necrotic which are your mainstays.

Deva and Djinni from Planar Ally are also strong, if you don't mind managing an additional summon.

Heal is fine I guess, but generally just drinking potions to stay topped is better with action economy.

And the save DCs for Blade Barrier are currently messed up, making it less than ideal IMO.

Dlinktp

Apparently clerics don't get sunbeam so planar ally it is heh. Or I could just give the amulet to my bard I guess. Probably a better use now that I think of it.

We_Get_It_You_Vape

so planar ally it is heh

Planar Ally was always my go-to #1 use of the Lvl 6 spell slot on Cleric, regardless of subclass.

I personally used Djinni quite a bit, but both Djinni and Deva are among the strongest summons in-game. If the main priority is power, then I think this may arguably be the strongest use of your level 6 spell slot. Both have pretty good AC and health. The Deva can fly, has really solid single-target damage, and can Revivify if an ally goes down. Djinni can't fly, but it has misty step. It also has a wealth of AOE damage options. Both are fantastic additions to the party, and any summon is going to be incredibly useful as it's an extra body for the enemy to focus on.

Or I could just give the amulet to my bard I guess. Probably a better use now that I think of it.

I would argue it's better to use Planar Ally. Action-economy is huge in D&D 5e, and this game is no different in that regard. Over the span on a "day" in-game, the summon from Planar Ally will likely have a bigger positive impact.
