I have had a druid and a paladin in WoW for years and I just go back and forth between their names for tavs, using my druid for women and my pally for men. Is it weird having saves from four different campaigns all with the same tav name? Yes, but it’s how I do it.

I actually have a list of clever names for each class, and take pride in them. I also have "legacy" names from like 20 years ago when I played Ultima Online. Back then, I got sooo many messages about my character name - Nihilist. And when I played Shadowbane, my bard named - Rhythm Method

glumpoodle

My favorite character I've seen posted online was 'Weirdal Githyankovic' (Githyanki Bard). I'm currently role-playing Mazzy Fentan as a proper sword & board paladin - which is honestly not my favorite, but I will have justice for Mazzy now that we've got a whole new edition of the world where halflings can be paladins.

Characters I've created, but haven't (yet) played:

  • GnoMoney Gno'Probl'ms (Deep Gnome Assassin)
  • Motian D'Oshynn (Drow Storm Sorcerer)
  • Smoov Brane (Half-orc Barbarian)
  • Wenn Bradee (Human Monk)

Here I am skipping most of act 1 and 2 to get to the city as fast as possible. I really don’t see how people don’t get bored of act 1 after a while. The dialogue choices aren’t THAT fresh after 10 playthroughs. Plus the juiciest parts of the story are literally in the city lol

Lou_Hodo

I get through act 1, in about 14 hours now. I take my time in Act 2 because I actually enjoy most of the interactions in that act. Act 3 is where it grind to a halt for me. I get there and I am like... I will do the House of Hope, and then start over because I dont care about the rest of it.

Leggo-my-eggos

Yeah I don’t get that, but it’s your opinion and game, play however you want. To me Astarion facing Cazador, Shadowheart confronting mother superior, Wyll rescuing his father, Karlach getting revenge on Gortash, Jaheira willing to risk everything just to save Minsc and even breaking into hell to save Hope are all my favorite parts of the game. It makes me scratch my head when people have hundreds of hours in the game and are so obsessed with Act 1 they never experience the highlight moments of the main characters. To me it’s like watching a movie and cutting it off right before it actually gets good.

Pro-Patria-Mori

As long as your approval with her is decent she usually spares the Nightsong. For the first dialogue pick the option where you don’t interfere. Aylin will then say something like, ā€œbut what has been taken from you? You’re still that child lost in the woods, afraid of wolvesā€ Then choose the dialogue option that’s like, ā€œshe knows something about your pastā€.

Or you could throw the spear into the abyss after entering the Shadowfell, but it’s pretty easy to get Shadowheart to spare Aylin.

Kronoshifter246

As long as your approval with her is decent she usually spares the Nightsong.

Well, this oughta be interesting for my four player campaign then. Honestly, that's my only real complaint with the game; too many companion quests are impossible to complete when you have four players because you can't take them out to talk to people.

Pro-Patria-Mori

Yall could use the party extender mod to have all the companions, so you can hear their dialogue and banter.

Kronoshifter246

Unfortunately we resolved that this playthrough would be unmodded. We'll probably end up doing this for the next few playthroughs.

DnDGamerGuy

I have a hard time understanding this at all lol. Act three has the most entertaining fights. The most epic moments. The best gear. And the finale of so many quest lines.

Act 1 is boring to me now in comparison

Lou_Hodo

The gear isnt really what sells me. Its also partly the lack of progression at that point. You sit at level 12 for the next 8 hours till you finally finish the game.

Great_White_Samurai

This, I still haven't gotten through act 3. First time I got to the city, solved all of Shadowhearts problems because she deserves to be happy, ensured Wulbren Bongle died, then lost interest in saving the world. I think it was wandering sewers that got to me.

WorryLegitimate259

I’ve beaten the game once. Got to act three twice. I think the biggest thing for me was that I wouldn’t level up anymore. You get to the beginning of act 3 and your max level. Maybe now that mods are on console and I can go to twenty I might give it a shot

I've never gotten the mindset of abandoning playthoughs and abandoning dozens of hours of content to recycle Act I over and over. Even if you don't like your character, you've always got Withers and the mirror that you can use at anytime.

Getting to Act III and seeing the consequences of my choices adds so much more replay ability. Also, actually getting to have a full build with endgame gear is amazing.

hopelesswanderer_-_

These comments are crazy, I thought it was normal for folks who play these sorts of games to be at least semi, completionists. As in you surely want to know what happens in the story? What is this cult all about? And the various characters you surely want to see where their various secrets and quests lead? Instead people saying they just play mostly act 1 and 2 then restart?? I'm im shocked haha. I did 1 run balanced, 1 run tact with different choices and dark urge, now I'm on what will probably be the final run (apart from a co op game with my mate but that will take forever) on hm and have finished everything in the game apart from hope and the final showdown. It has been around 80 hours so it's not thaaat long of a game, especially on runs where you are either specifically missing out stuff for your own role play reasons or indeed, you know the game quote well by run 2 or 3 so you can prepare better for situations and know where to find things to speed things up during the slower parts of the game. I can't believe these comments 😭😭 YOURE ALL MISSING OUT ON SUCH FUN THINGS ahhhhh

We_Get_It_You_Vape

Instead people saying they just play mostly act 1 and 2 then restart??

I also like to finish my playthroughs myself, but this isn't that surprising IMO.

I think most people who restart after/during Act 2 probably aren't doing it right away. They're probably spending many hours getting through Act 1 and 2, and then for one reason or another (maybe fatigue, or life gets in the way), they put the game down for a while. Then, by the time they go to pick back up the game, maybe it's been so long that they'd rather start fresh.

For me personally, I'm like you. I want to see the story conclude and I want to see my Level 12 builds in their full glory.

Maybe people need to learn to pace themselves through the game, so that you don't get fatigued on it. If you play 4 hours per night for 15 days straight, there's a chance you're going to lose enthusiasm to play. But, if you give yourself periodic breaks from the game, it'll always feel fresh.

PancakeMixEnema

Iā€˜m in the city and there is too much to do and very final decisions will be here soon, someone was abducted and I need to sort out alliances and It’s honestly simply too tedious for me to ever continue.

In games I usually try to have a good playthrough but here I feel basically a little overwhelmed and would rather replay the other parts.

SafeHandsGoneWild

This nailed the sentiment as a chronic restarter, I always get overwhelmed some point in Act 3 BECAUSE I am a completionist. I don’t want to forget to do one of the characters stories so I’m just running around the city nonstop until I long for the simplicity of act 1.

Too make matters worse I am also a bit of an item hoarder so I usually get overwhelmed by my inventories and stashes around this time too.

PancakeMixEnema

Act 3 is the Witcher 3 on steroids and that is too much for me. I have already faced several grave consequences because apparently I was too late for something or discovered something too early and then overlooked to handle something first and then this and that was triggered and now this person died and this romance is ruined for weird reasons and and and

and then it basically turns into responsibilities and then I might as well handle my real life,

The game basically expects me to go with the flow and take it as it comes and have several unique playthroughs but that is simply not how I play games.

SafeHandsGoneWild

That is THE worst, I have definitely had that where I’m in act 3 and I discover some missed opportunity in the last act or crucial plot point I missed and then I completely lose motivation to finish the play through.

TeaBarbarian

You could keep a save from Act 3 early on and then go at the story a few different ways on separate save files.

ANUSTART942

Druid - Circle of Restarting

I don't restart because I'm not curious about the ending, I restart because I have this growing urge in me to try a new character (like playing Durge instead of Tav, trying an origin character, playing Tav again but with different companions or taking a different path, etc.). I'm in act 3 now and I really wanna finish the game this time for the first time, but I already have a bunch of other ideas for playthroughs in my mind that kinda sound more fun to me 😭 It's not like I go into a playthrough intending to never finish it, I'm just really bad at sticking to one thing for so many hours. But I think I can make it this time, already got into Wyrm's Rock Fortress!

AcidShotEyes

I'm still on my first playthrough, haven't made another character. I'm on act 3. It's a game I float in and out of. I either play it for 8 hours straight for three days in a row or I don't touch it for a couple of months lol I think I'll pick back up tonight, I just finished expedition 33 and lost interest in anything else for a few days.

Grymare

It's very interesting how different people play this game.

Like I did one playthrough and then shelved the game for over a year because the thought of doing the same stuff again seemed so boring to me.

After a bit over a year I got the itch to play again (as the latest update was coming out) and parts truly felt like a slog because while yes there were a few things that I did differently this time around that were pretty major overall it is still the same game and the same story with (mostly) the same characters. I still had fun and finished it but I can't understand people who have 10+ playthroughs and still enjoy it.

I admire it though and wish I could play the game more because it truly is a masterpiece. But currently the only way I can see myself go back to playing is if a group of friends got together for a multiplayer playthrough.

SteelersBraves97

Not OP, but it’s just a really long game, especially if you play it very thoroughly, and as much as I love it, I tend to feel ready for something else after 100 hours or so. I have 360 hours in BG3 total, but it’s my only experience playing any kind of dnd, and it kind of ā€œtiresā€ me in a way if that makes sense. It’s just so dense. It’s like if you combined the Witcher 3 or Mass Effect dialogue with Xcom 2 (on steroids) combat. Sometimes I just need a break and have to play something more basic after my 9 to 5.

I love the game dearly but have only completed acts 1 and 2. I consistently lose steam towards the end of act 2 and say to myself, ā€œI’ll play another game for a bit then hop back on BG3 in a few weeksā€ but those few weeks turn into a few months, then I’m ready for a whole new class, party composition, new choices, etc. And so the cycle continues. I tend to this with Skyrim as well so it’s not exclusively a BGIII thing.

Act 1 is as long as many other games and I really don't like the dark vibe of act 2. I would even install a mod that skips act 2, just gives you the exp, so that you go instantly to act 3.

ELDRITCH BLAST

I’m so curious about why? It’s not that much more bleak than the first act.

SuccessfulOutside722

It is a lot more bleak. The whole land is cursed. The 2 times I've been there felt like you are not supposed to explore, because of the shadow curse. So I end up clinging to the main story and try to not leave my path. Everything you see is dead/undead.

In Act 1 only small parts are dark, like the forest of the hag. Sure, Underdark is literally dark, but at least there are quite a few humanoids to interact and you do not get told to not explore.

HamatoraBae
ELDRITCH BLAST

I mean, it definitely has an extremely foreboding aura but there’s a lot to find and you get a myriad of ways to explore deep into the shadow curse pretty early on (Moonlantern, Isobel, probs something else I’m missing).

I see the way you feel but it made me feel the opposite, made me want to see what exactly happened to destroy it all like this. What still remains, what doesn’t, etc.

Deceitful little calamari šŸ™

Act 2 is done very good and I personally explored the shit our of it but it makes me feel super depressed and physically sick. I am already on a thin ice mentally, I've done 3 competed runs and each time I get to act 2 I have to close the game for a while to get used to it and then literally power through. Best part of act 2 for me is that night when you get to act 3 and finally see the fucking sun.

My first time I managed to stumble onto fucking morgue, fall in some nasty ass hole with zombies underneath it and crawl out on the other side to get attacked by the fish people. I felt so disgusted, I didn't even come near the damn thing next two runs. And each time I think of giving it another run, I remember that feeling and just don't want to go through act 2 again.

I’ve completed the game 3 times, got to Act 3 another time then a mod wasn’t working so I quit that one. And I’m currently almost done with my first githyanki playthrough. And I plan on doing an actual Durge evil run (I’ve played this game enough that maybe now I can make the bad decisions and feel ok, plus mods help with incentives) and then I’m finally gonna do Honour Mode and I think I’ll do Wyll Origin story for that.

I play as wizard and I acknowledged that True Strike, Friends and Magic Hand are almost useless for BG playthrough no matter how I like flavour of these cantrips for vanilla dnd.

I took fire bolt, electric touch and split between sword ward or ray of frost. The first allows fragile wizard to survive more damage the second one is free fire extinguisher against annoying fire surfaces and a way to slow down movement of enemies yet it's more like doubles fire bolt.

Part of the problem (for me at least) is that the only mods that fix the dozens of broken items so they actually do what their description says gets updated on a near daily basis, which causes all sorts of compatibility issues if you try and play with it out of date.

It means you've either got to live with the glitched objects which is hard to do once you know the scale and scope of the problem, or kill your playthrough and start over fresh every time you open the game.

This all day long… I’ve made it to the Kresh at least 1000 times. But only 3 times to Moonrise Towers!

I am on a similar boat. Act 3 feels too big to enjoy for me considering it is my 4th or 5th run. There are 20 quest markers on the map. So many characters to interact and follow. But worst part is lvl cap imo. We are doing a coop run with my friend rn and we are already lvl 12. Only completed quarter(?) Of act 3. All the major story elements are still ahead of us. I could respec my character for a fresh taste but narratively it feels wrong. Act 1 and 2 were so much fun but act 3 feels like I have lots of items in my todo list that needs to be completed

600 hours on my first playthrough because I spent a lot of time with the menu open ā€œpausingā€ the game for days at a stretch :(

How some people play the game: many playthroughs

How I play the game: I spend 4 hours downloading appearance mods, thinking of a certain build for the theme, designing my character, and writing fanfiction in my head. Then I start act 1 super excited, get bored by the time I end up at the transponder, and quit the run forever

Fun!

Shit, I get caught up in the "theory crafting" stage so much, I hardly play the 100s of builds I make on the build maker website.

Basically every RPG I've ever played.

BG 1 & 2, NWNĀ  (Wailing Death and HotU), and Mass Effect 1 are probably the only ones I've actually completed.

I started a game over a year ago and got into act 2. Picked it up recently and couldn’t remember anything that was going on or the decisions I made, so I rolled a new character. This post is giving me the validation I am craving.

The main difference between BG3 and actual D&D is that I've actually completed a campaign in BG3.

ARC_Trooper_Echo

Getting past certain parts of act 1 is the most dangerous part of any playthrough for me. Once you reach act 2, that’s when the builds start really coming online and the story starts really kicking off in a good way.

Zlorfikarzuna

Make it 2500h, with only about 7 fully finished playthroughs.

I'm very much an Act 1 & 2 BG3 player

This is the one that I just completely do not understand.

I have probably beat the game 10 times and act 3 is my favorite part. But I have talked to tons of people that have never even beat the game after hundreds of hours

It's those build videos, you see one and decide to start a new play through.

Haha. This was definitely me, flexing my 200+ hours in the game to my friends like I was the BG3 expert, but I had only barely scratched the surface of Act 3. I finally beat the game on HM and am free of my curse, except I’ve still only probably seen half of what Act 3 has to offer.

I mashed my face against the game playing Honour mode trying to make x4 Wild Magic Sorcerers for fun, but it just wouldn't work (I suck). Instead I've settled for x2 Sorcerers x2 Barbarians all Wild Magic, and I've actually gotten to act 2 and taking it seriously.

I almost fucked it up today fighting Kar'niss with less than ideal positioning, because what happened?
Wild Magic: Cats and Dogs

I briefly shit my pants but he actually got Polymorphed too so I laughed my ass off, especially as I had him trapped in Black Tentacles (although it was super annoying thinking I had an instant kill, the polymorph barely lasted)

I'm still on my first play through. Currently wrapping up (I think) act 2. I think most of my hours are spent exploring the map, shopping, and managing my inventory lmao.

I have the first two acts memorized like the back of my hand. I know where the dig spots are, the number of enemies in each fight, the dialogue checks... But act 3 is still a mystery.

I have bad ā€˜alt-itis’ and always want to start new characters instead of continuing with one. What got me out of that in BG3 was playing as the Origin characters instead.
