Move over Scratch and Owlbear, this is legitimately the cutest, ugliest thing I've ever seen. She's horrible, I love her! My Tav takes her everywhere.
I need to share my Shovel appreciation. When I popped open a summon scroll for an extra boost before a tough fight I was not expecting to get so attached to this precious menace.
You can also rename it as Fork, and it likes the new name way better And I also like that every time you summon it, it’ll be like Fork is BORED::(((( FORK WANTS TO MURDERIZE://
She likes Basket even better... because babies come in baskets.
fork was the bad option. Forks Make things slow, less blood and not enough tearing
How? I need Shovel!
Shovel can be found as a summon scroll in the necromancer basement in the Blighted Village. Pretty sure it's in one of the caskets.
This is my first go recruiting her, so i'm not sure if there are other methods, but my bard Tav just opened the scroll and spoke to her.
When she didn't vanish after a long rest, I figured she was special and had all my companions interact with her. When Gale spoke to Shovel, he got her as a permanent summon spell.
It's a little delicate to get the conversation right for Shovel to agree to join. Well done on doing it that way first time!
Scribing the scroll of Shovel is, in my opinion, the easiest way to keep them. Perks of being a Wizard! But you can convince Shovel to tag along as any spellcaster!
Wow, that was lucky then!
I think the dialog choices I went with were: Saying you found her scroll in a casket. "Is your name Shovel?" Then choosing to keep the name. Asking, "Is that what your old master made you do?" Then saying "you have a way with words".
Spoilers, to the best of my knowledge, for those who want to know about recruiting them:
Before recruiting them, its widely reported Shovel doesn't like their name changed. Definitely keep it if you want to keep them..
Shovel needs to be aware you're a 'magic type' by picking an appropriate class option when talking to the magic mirror.
This should more or less prompt them to teach you how to summon them, and ensure you have a full playthrough with the foul mouthed fiend.
It’s better if you get Shovel through the dialog, because then they become a common action, in the same area as Scratch, instead of a spell you need a slot for.
I tried multiple times to get her summon spell and failed a ton so I just kept the scroll unused until like sometime deep in act 2 I said screw it I need assistance and used it and it stayed that time.
Wizard can just scribble down her scroll and it works well. But a few spellcaster classes like sorcerer can learn her summons this way too. You can even respec, learn the spell that summons her, and then respec back, and you'll still have it even on non-spellcasters, I believe
Sorcerors, warlocks, and wizards can get Shovel to teach them her summoning spell. Temporarily respec into one of the three, initiate dialogue, she'll call you a spell shite, and teaches you the "sparky magic". Then you can respec back to what you were before and you'll still have the spell

It can be any sorcerer, not just Dragon.
Didn't do step 3, Shovel ended up getting killed by the two big'uns porking in the barn on the edge of town... because I used that poor quasit as bait. :C
Oh so this is what they mean when you come up to a dirt pile and it says "you need a shovel"! I bought a spade off a trader thinking that's what I needed lmao /s
"And you're a slab of beef with nipples! Moo!"
One of my favorite lines in the game. Shovel's a hoot :)
She loses her shit if you're a dragonborn
Shovel is the main reason my Spores Druid has 1 level in Wizard
FYI there are ways to have it permanently learnt without having to take a level in wizard (if you happen to solely take that level for shovel)
The easiest way to learn it is by being a magic caster, like a sorcerer (except some subclasses) and: 1. Summoning shovel before entering the mirror cave. 2. Talking with her after entering the mirror.
If she says to the one speaking "oh a spell shite" or similar, you'll get the permanent familiar power.
Just so you know, if you play your cards right, any Wizard, Warlock, and non-Storm or Shadow Sorcs can get her as a permanent summon (without spending gold as a Wizard). Storm and Shadow Sorcerers terrify her.
Have anyone except you use the scroll, dont rename or bore her, and go through the mirror. When your caster speaks to her, she'll call you a "spell-shite" and the spell is added to your permanently prepared list.
I always lose Shovel in a fight a few encounters after getting him.
Wizard FTW. And Shovel is a her.
tell you truth beefy
I love that little shit
That's clearly a Bucket.
Dear god.
“There’s more.”
No…!
This bitch will purposefully try to create havoc in the mirror area if u listen to her
Baskets destiny is FISTING!
I expected the title to be "hear me out"
HELL YEAH, MORE SHOVEL LOVERS
Shit piddling toe rag!
Yeah that little bastard gets killed pretty easy.
I think you are doing something wrong. She can literally turn invisible each turn.
I rarely add her in combat but when I do she gets wasted pretty quickly. Better her than 1 of my players.
Damn it! I found that scroll and promptly forgot about it! Tonight I'm digging it up and getting me a cute little murder goblin!
Fun fact, I actually “discovered” camp follower buffs because I wanted to keep her alive. I use Withers hirelings to give her aid, warding bond, and mage armor which makes her somewhat durable. At level 12 she has 44 hit points which warding bond makes an effective 88!
Have you obtained Us as a summon yet?
Detach Shovel from the summoner and use her invisibility walk up and attack enemies to trigger pretty much guaranteed surprise rounds!
Lately whenever I get her, she stops saying anything other than "book didn't melt your eye goobers. Oh well, next time"
As per her own very words: “IT’S FISTING TIME!!!!”
It’s only fun when SHOVEL does the fisting!!
