I did that my first playthrough so I kind of saw my Tav’s dream guardian as a maternal figure.
Needless to say, shit got weird.
My Tav's first guardian felt like his smarter, older, adoptive step-sister

I made Lae’zel’s dream guardian Vlaakith. She was so confused in the creche part when one Vlaakith was ordering her to kill the other Vlaakith; meanwhile the dream Vlaakith was repeatedly warning her to stay away from “the Gityanki”
Oh right, I never even thought how weird it'd be for a Githyanki Dream Guardian to warn you off from the creche.
Dream Guardian being a changeling would certainly explain why they appear different to every companion /not-sus-at-all

I highly recommend you to play the Astarion Origin with the NV as Cazador, it adds so much feelings.
What is NV short for? I keep trying to figure it out, but seeing it in tandem with Cazador is making me only be able to think of New Vegas

I use NV to not spoil the identity of the NV not to not spoil about them 😉
"Dream guardian" doesn't spoil that either though. It's literally the main term used to refer to that character across every piece of media I've ever seen it referenced lol. I appreciate your efforts to minimize spoilers, but this is not remotely a spoiler, and using a different term (and as an initialism no less) is only going to confuse people.
Listen, I have seen him be called Night visitor, dream visitor, dream guardian.
Sorry if I use night visitor (which is more used in my language btw), the point is I use this name to not spoil about their real identity, there’s nothing wrong here and it’s not important as everybody understands night visitor/dream guardian/dream visitor 🤷🏻♀️
I didn't consider other languages having different terms, so that's fair enough. But I would still say that not everybody understands that "NV" is the dream guardian without at the very least an explanation of what NV means first. But maybe that's just my massive pet peeve at the tendency of people on the internet to abbreviate absolutely everything and just assume people know what they're talking about at play.

Just relax about it, you appeared a bit too obtuse when you were actually right about me using NV instead of night visitor, it can be not well perceived even if you were very polite. I am too old and experienced to let that kind of stuff hurt me but someone else could have thought they were so wrong that they couldn’t talk about the game and be scared away.
For the dream guardian (look at me changing how I call them, I’m trying 😁), I would love to call them the nickname I gave them but it would spoil too much 😂

Oof that'd be rough to go through. I haven't done any origin playthroughs yet but I always considered starting with Astarion if I was going to. He's always a staple in my party so maybe next run :)
It works very well if you like to roleplay.
I have always thought that you know who would choose to appear as someone Tav knows but without knowing who it is. And that Tav has some kind of amnesia because of the tadpole.
So he appears as Mystra for Gale, Mizora or his dad for Wyll, Gortash for Karlach, Vlaakith for Lae’zel, Viconia for SH, Orin for Durge, Cazador for Astarion.
Every heads are available in mods on console so I am very happy to be able to traumatise them more 😂
And for my Tav it depends on what I have decided to do. When I play Durge I always choose Orin’s normal head for Tav (I love it, she is so beautiful) and make the NV Orin so they are twins with one of them the evil one.

They are more cousin-ish.
However, blink and you miss it romance implications between Durge & Gortash make for a great Gortash-esque guardian, too.

I tend to make my Durge's look a bit corpsey. Or at least like they've been through hell.
I like to give them a scar on the forehead for the brain damage and grey black eyes. Something that makes it look like they're barely there on the inside. There's no true black without having totally black eyes though, I just want the iris
I always change default Durge to have pale red eyes instead of the normal red eyes. Really changes the vibe to “dying”

I do this too! I always choose a female Guardian and make her look dead, so I can headcanon that she’s Durge’s foster mum.
I like the idea that the only image he has left of someone he once loved is her lifeless body — the moment after he killed her.

When I play Durge, I make my Durge look dead and gradually get more alive if I'm doing Redemption. Their guardian is them but alive (with weird bits of purple, hrm, wonder what that's about), and eventually they almost look the same.
My Durge dream guardian is usually modeled after images i’ve found of human versions of Bhaal. Even though Durge doesn’t know who they are, they just fully trust them for some reason ¯_(ツ)_/¯

You know, people always told me dark urge was violent and gruesome but I'm not getting a whole lot of violent options. Like yeah, I ate Gale, and I clawed the bard's innards out with my bare hands, and I murdered the blob cow in front of my party, and I killed the pixie with my bare hands and I killed the child in the grove with the snake... but like... I thought it was going to be game changing levels of violence and brutality. This is just what I did in my normal playthough with extra steps.

I almost always make my Durge’s look like Alfira but not quite, like they’re trying to remember her and don’t have all the details (definitely not because I didn’t want to pull up a reference image), and they almost always show up 1-2 nights after she dies, which really adds to the “guilt-based figment of imagination” vibes

I’ve replayed default resist durge like 4 times now with a Tav character as well. I’m neurotic and keep trying to make the perfect “canon” story and AUs.
I enjoyed the time made mine into a Gandalf like Githyanki, just a really old balding big beard wizard with arcane like tattoos. Looked really awesome.
Was quite happy with the character, felt like being guided by old wizard was very much like Dungeon Siege, so it was cool.
Until.... He started flirting with me one time, I got the ick so bad and said nope, not being nice to you anymore till you learn some boundaries dude

I always make them look like my tav's parent. That way, when the emperor tries to seduce them and goes "I can use my dream guardian form if you are into it ;)" he looks like a complete moron and my Tav is justified in calling him a freak

Another time I made a character who was a child soldier who had since grown up and escaped the military and their guardian was what they imagined their mother to look like
I typically make my durge's dream guardian either alfira, a custom tav (because blood in baldurs gate), or orin, because who should the blood crazed lunatic trust more than the one who killed them

I did a githyanki warlock durge who was just homelander, so I made his guardian into a second homelander. It was perfect. Perfect. Everything down to the last minute details.
If I play a Durge they always look like they’re corrupted by Bhall in some manner, and my guardian is them if they were born into a normal life.
