I don’t get it though. How did he not bleed out with 2 minutes?? EDIT: oh ok he just broke the basic rules: “ By the time I got to the hospital, they said ‘You shouldn't be alive because there's no blood in you.’
It helps that the body has ways of coping with full limb amputation trauma. The major blood vessels can sort of retract and spasm, thus closing themselves off. It may not bleed all that much after a short while. Of course he lost a lot, but obviously it wasn't one of those cases where someone accidentally slices open a major artery in their leg or arm and bleeds out and dies within 2 minutes
See what happened was that he lost two armfuls of blood but needed two less armfuls of blood
I re read this 3 times then was laughing with tears for a good 20 seconds
Reminds me of that gaming clip where the dude said he was losing 5000ml of blood a second
blood vessels thrombose often at both ends as a defense mechanism.
Cheat codes.
It's like when wile e Coyote runs out over a cliff, but doesn't fall until he thinks about gravity or looks down. Just be dumb and determined, and you can do anything in life
I can’t even wrap my head around the level of tough. He not only got himself composed enough to get into the house and dial the phone with a pencil in his mouth. He then went and laid in the bathtub while he waited for them because he didn’t want to get his moms house any messier than it already was. I mean dude
Back when I was in high school it was in a very rural area. During a shop class we had someone from State Farm come in and show us a safety video. One of the pictures was a guys arm or what was left of it. He was next to a hay bailer and saw something in the machine. Went to grab it and it caught his sleeve and started pulling his arm in and chewing it up. It also slammed his head against the machine every time it did a bail of hay. Dude took out his pocket knife and cut his own arm off.
Just imagining going through the bone still makes me uneasy. That of course is nothing to the man that had to cut his own son in laws nuts off after they got caught up in a shaft he was straddling while they worked on a tractor.
Same thing happened to a guy I know. I’m not sure if it kept going around and smacked his head, but he lost both arms and was scalped. He survived, fortunately
[removed]
He got in the house through the garage and took fone into the bathtubY with him so he would bleed all over the carpets. He also describes himself as 2 people, before accident and after.
Read his story in a reader's digest long long time ago. Seems had an impact.
I miss Reader's Digest.
When it was good*
So, do you get full use of reattached limbs?
Obv, its better to have them than not, but I wonder how functional they are.
Reattached limbs lose some function, but if the surgery goes well + physical therapy you can still use them for normal life activities and its better than a prosthetic (since most people wouldn't get the really advanced ones)
Would it? I guess you’d look more normal.
But if they’re dead, just swinging around, sounds more inconvenient them being there than not.
Ignoring how it looks for all we know in the next 10 years, we may he able to restore function. Id be pissed if I decided not to keep them and then find out Ai or Doctors found a solution, lol.
( fully expecting hate from others for daring to mention Ai )
Put them in a freezer lol works in movies right?
To be fair you are not wrong thats also an option!
Plus if you’re walking down the sidewalk Raquel Welch might think you’re mocking her and attack you
A year and a half after the accident, not really:
After 15 operations, he has made a remarkable recovery, impossible though it is to completely repair what a machine has torn asunder. His forearms do not rotate, and his fingers are curled into claws, rigid and unable to grasp. Some gains lie ahead. Still more surgery should open his hands. Further nerve regeneration may reawaken some touch in his fingers.

From memory, he never really regained any good function, and actually may have been better off with prosthetics - but there's a strong drive to keep one's own limbs if the option is available.
Yes, this is what I wanna know
That's the most farm boy thing I've ever heard.
I'll try to remember this the next time I bitch and moan about pretty much anything
This is what they mean to remain calm in every situation
The definition of keeping calm under pressure.
Looked him up. Looks like he got fair use of his arms again but his hands more or less stay in a fist like shape. His fingers have very limited usage.
Crazy thing about this, another guy a friend of my dads by the name Tom Otagard I think is how you say it, he got his arm caught in a gran auger and sliced it all up. I think he is talked about on some of the Farm Rescue videos. Man I can see why its hard to get life insurance if your a farmer.
It’s about this severity needed for a farmer to call the hospital. If it would have only been one arm he would have slept it off.
His story was on the show I survived. Incredible story
Not always, of course, but in nearly every situation, staying calm and thinking rationally will get you out of a jam.
He's a survivor!
that's the medical team i want working on me!
Arms reattached, that is just wild
Holy hell. This dude is a beast.
I’m impressed. They were able to reattach his arms back in 1992
How does one lose both arms? How does one survive the amount of blood loss? This is definitely amazing, but I have so many questions.
Certainly impressive that he had the composure to do this. Perhaps he took note and thought to himself, " It's only a flesh wound."
Please be careful with tractors 🚜 the next time you are working with them. As you can see, they don't mess around.
Nice try at getting out of your piano lessons, dude.
Mrballen covered this story in one of his episodes on YouTube... One of the earlier ones he did
How much did he pay for this service?
Amen
“Hey siri dial 911”
And make no mistake, this is not all it will take.
The Dollop podcast has an excellent episode on this that people should listen to.
Unfortunately the doctors way oversold how well his arms would work after being reattached. They were basically completely unusable after being reattached. He would have been way better off just having prosthesic arms.
My favorite podcast and one of my favorite episodes.
I know time is of the essence on getting me to the hospital on whether I live or not, but could you do me a solid and go pick up my god damn arms?
It is very important to note that his arms were not chopped off but ripped off. The reason this is important is because when you rip a limb off, it stretches the blood vessels, causing them to seal after. This stops you from losing all the blood in your body. If chopped, the blodd vessels would have been relatively fine, allowing all the blood to pump/leak out until his heart stopped finctioning.
I wonder how he's doing today
Us North Dakotans are just built different
Yeah, getting your arms chopped off in a farm accident while HOME alone
And now he is your teammate in CS
[deleted]
It’s telling me to pay because it’s older then 30days

This is a rick roll, btw.
I bet you are fun at parties
Give the guy a hand 🤚 or two
Who the fuck farms freaks. I have enough of them already
Hey Siri/google/alexa call 911. I m thankful to have this option.
I call BS. Both arms cut off with no help, you’d be hemorrhaging so much you wouldn’t make it inside let alone still being alive when the medics got there.
It happened. I lived about 45 minutes away from where it took place so it was very big news there for a long time.
His arms were torn off rather than cut off.
After seeing the medical bill he died 🥲. Murica for Muricans. Make Murica richer by means of their peasants Again
