Also, midnight in Utqiagvik looks a lot different than midnight in Unalaska

It sounds like you made those up. There's a place in Alaska called Un-Alaska?

adult_on_paper

There’s also a place called Dead Horse, and another called Chicken

jonathanjrouse

I just drove through Chicken last week on my trip to Alaska. I think I saw all 17 people. Was on my way from Dawson City (in The Yukon) back to Fairbanks along the Top of the World highway

Yes there is Unalaska, it is on the island Unalaska. Which is also the island that Dutch Harbor is located. If you have ever watched Deadliest Catch most of that is from Dutch Harbor.

I used to know a girl in school who got crabs and that's exactly what they called her... "Deadliest Catch"🦀

It depends on how far north you are.

Arctic time lapse. No. It is clearly going to be way more sunny during noon.

Decemberbabydoll

You’re misunderstanding what I’m saying, and also seem to be taking the idea of it “looking the same as noon” very very literally. Filming this in Anchorage will be way less dramatic than filming this in Nome. The amount of light you get at midnight will vary greatly depending on how far north you are in Alaska. I was born and raised there and have seen it myself for decades.

You're right. I had my best friend Army stationed in Fairbanks. In July the sun basically never set minus the mountains. He had blackout curtains so he could sleep.

They have a golf course on one of the Army bases. People would playing at 2 AM

I remember visiting Edinburgh Scotland when they had long days. I woke up and looked out my hostil window at Arthurs Seat (Large plateua/hill thing) and seeing people hiking up as the early morning light made the sky a dim but vivid blue. It was beautiful...

And then I realized it was like 4 am... It looked like Morning! like... 7am morning!

jrdnlv15

As a Canadian it’s kind of crazy to think of the length of days that some places in Europe get in the middle of summer. I wouldn’t think of Edinburgh as being that much further north than I am, but it’s over 12° north. To put this in to perspective for any other Canadians out there, Edinburgh is the same latitude as the southern end of Flaherty Island in Hudson Bay.

Cirandi2

And Edinburgh is right at the same latitude as the southern tip of Sweden. Northern Sweden is at the latitude of central king Williams Island.

Its far north 😀

and 6 months later it's dark all day.

TheLoler04

Yeah I'm not Alaskan, but live in the northern part of the world. Currently it is too bright to make you feel sleepy(so shit sleeping personally), and in winter most people get depressed to various degrees. So it has its ups and downs, because when you're not working it's nice to have sunlight later.

Ok_Run6706

Yup, in December in Lithuania we had total of 9 hours of sun per month. Now when you soend most of it at work, you are lucky if you see sun even once during your break.

France troops came to train in Lithuania, and majority of them got depression in 2 months :D

As someone from the Nordic countries I would walk out in pyjamas when it's -5°C out to get mail or garbage, but you Americans don't seem used to it even though it's nothing new. But a cold car is annoying although it can be resolved, and the trees aren't fixable unfortunately.

Been there and it really messes with you brain when you have been inside the blacked out bar drinking for 3 hours and you stagger out and the sun is still shining

iamnotyourspiderman

Northern Finland has the same thing going on. In the height of the summer the sun barely sets, while at the opposite end in winter the sun barely rises.

Taking this into consideration I really hate daylight savings time here - the whole winter summer rotation is plenty of rollercoaster for ones body and mind, I’d very much not have any additional artificial obstacles to it tyvm.

I live in Alaska. While midnight doesn’t look like noon, it’s basically like twilight and then the sun starts to rise again.

They got suburbs in Alaska? Damn son

trivetsandcolanders

Yeah, I believe this would be around Fairbanks - just south of the Arctic Circle. Anchorage has suburbs too, but I think they’re too far south to have this much light at 1 am.

adult_on_paper

Pretty sure this is Anchorage. That’s what it looks like there in the summer. Twilight around 3-4 am.

I grew up in Fairbanks. Mosquitoes are big and fierce this time of the year. The only good thing about it is that they carry off bug-eyed rat-dogs.

I spent one overnight in Helsinki in July one time and had to get up very early (well, for me), like 3:30 am. We were surprised it wasn’t full dark. Pretty cool. And as others have said, it’ll balance out in the winter months. Cheers.

In what world does the sun set at noon?! Oh I guess Alaska? Maybe they meant “Summer in Alaska where midnight looks like noon, during winter”?

Spent a summer in Bergen. 2a felt creepily bright. So the hotel rooms had these blackout curtains to let that not affect one’s sleeping habits

Ruhelose_Traume

I've lived in Anchorage and Wasilla for year (total time) and yeah both places are like normal American cities with suburbs and stripmalls.

I love the winters here it's my favorite, I don't really get cold and I love the dark.

The sun in June is out the longest I'd say it's only really that dark twilight from 1am to 4am also depends on how cloudy it is. But yes 10pm on a clear day will look like 4pm in say TX.

The sun is also very low so it's never like bright and shining overhead.

My mom's family is from Sweden and I went there almost every summer with her growing up. I never got used to this. It's really disorienting. This seems to be on a slightly higher latitude, but not by much. I guess it might appeal to some, but it screwed with my circadian rhythm bad.

One of those things that's cool to witness. But living through it with no darkness for like 2 whole months? No thanks. Same as the near absence of quality sunlight in the winter. There goes weeks where you never get much more than a twilight before it gets dark again.
