Insurance companies need to be shamed for stuff like this. Shout it from the rooftops. If you’re born with something then it’s necessary. It should be a crime to deny coverage in some cases.
…I’m going to have to take something closer to a middle ground here - I’m told that tonsils and appendixes are optional, kidneys have redundancies, and reproductive organs aren’t necessary for a fulfilling life, and even when it comes to my fingers, I strongly suspect I’d be able to get along just fine missing one, or maybe even two, fingers on one or both of my hands. There is absolutely a point at which there is too much non-vital stuff missing, and that has got to be some time before one hand is reduced to a paddle with a thumb, but it’s not “if you’re born with something then it’s necessary”.

Sounds like that insurance company is full of cr*p! They probably also would claim that a lost leg would be of no importance & refuse to pay for a prosthetic or a wheelchair! Wish you could mention its name so others could avoid that "insurance" firm like the plague!!! So lucky you're so ingenious as to be able to make your own hand prosthetic but they should be ashamed!!!
