Yeah maybe the elephant learned the rule that if you walk off the path you get bonked with a stick. It's enforcing the same rules it has been subjugated by.

SmartToecap

The same rules it has been subjugated to. Rules don’t actively go around subjugating, that’s people.

Memignorance

Subjugated people subjugate people by enforcing rules that were enforced on them. I don't understand your distinction, I don't think my usage implied whatever you're saying it implied.

SmartToecap

It’s a grammar thing I tried to point out.
The preposition you use depends on the relationship you want to depict.

People are not subjugated by rules.
People are subjugated by people.

People are subjugated to rules by people.

Catch it now?

I am not forced to listen by the radio.
I am forced to listen by my instructor.
I am forced to listen to the radio by my instructor.

You're wrong. If rules are the reason for subjugation, then you are subjugated by the rules.

Inevitable-Ad-9570

I think it works either way it's just a bit more abstract with the by. Not incorrect or unclear. You can be bound by rules.

Edit: your by the radio example is different. the radio is not doing the listening in this case (you are) so that would make no sense. the imagined instructor does not factor into that sentence. The rules can do the subjugating in an abstract way (again similar to how they can bind you) that makes sense.

You are trying to subjucate me by some silly rule, I am not forced to listen.

Wrong subreddit. This is /BeAmazed not /LearnEnglish.

You can find plenty of those people over there.

That’s because prepositions depend on the verb you use primarily and only secondarily on the object.

Maybe look up how English grammar works before making wrong claims?! Like literally any dictionary entry for any verb will specify what prepositions to use with it for which meaning.

Probably shouldnt be breaking the will of animals so you can ride on their backs, if i wad that elephant id wanna kill humans for captivating me and forcing me to be ridden for their profit.

SqueakBoxx

Those poor elephants. literally breaking their backs carrying tourists.

Active_Awareness_943

Yes! That is wrong on so many levels.

Matteracecall

Elephants need to be very brutally trained to break their characters and make them obedient enough for people to ride them.

Theres a ton of literature on it and the method is very cruel.

They often get separated from their families while young and heavily beaten.

That enough?

I swear to god he must be an asshole, otherwise why would an elephant get those intrusive thoughts and not even hesitate?

They also have great memory right? Or is that a myth.

kinnaq

Sure, because there's no other conceivable reason a barely domesticated animal would act out.

TheLoler04

Well considering it got a human on top of it, it doesn't exactly seem aggressive. To me elephants don't ever look aggressive and that was a very focused stick strike, and then it kept on going like nothing happened.

Sort of like slapping a friend in the back and running away when you walked past them in a school hallway. Not malicious, but definitely not random.

100_cats_on_a_phone

I think they mean barely domesticated in that they are pretty close to the natural, wild, animals. So they are much more of independent thinkers than our domestic species. (Like how dogs -- the other extreme -- are very clever but really can't use it, most of the time, to make their own decisions)

ShrimpProphet

Being intelligent doesn't mean you can't also be "mean" at the same time. Just think of octopuses that enjoy punching fish for fun

TheLoler04

The memory thing was more so that they might remember him from ages ago, not that the intelligence completely justifies all behaviour.

twodogsbarkin

I saw it more like a friend messing with another friend. Like a middle schooler flicking a buddy’s ear when they pass between classes.

Outrageous_Log_906

Yes, let’s pretend like we know what’s going on in the mind of an elephant and conflate their rationality with those of humans.

TheLoler04

I see them as friendly giants, so I don't see them hitting someone on purpose for no reason. But you are right I'm just assuming, they might also be unaware that we aren't as tough as they are.
