Put a long screwdriver through the area where the doorknob usually goes, grab it on each side of the door and pull it to push the latch out. The latch is likely just held in by stain/poly.

Do y’all mean hold it like you’re holding bicycle handle bars? 👀 🤭

bostonbananarama

Yes, but slightly less pedaling.

CrazyLegsRyan

But more hip motion.

This is the way

Thanks so much. I have tried this but my one screwdriver is too long and I didn’t want it to bend

bostonbananarama

Are you grabbing the tip and the handle simultaneously? It should not be bending, you're not using it like a pry bar.

Stumblin_McBumblin

Mines not that big, so yeah, if I'm grabbing the tip I'm also grabbing the handle.

CrazyLegsRyan

You’re going to have a hard time getting it through the little hole.

It is imperative that the screwdriver is not damaged.

Yes I am but I had one of those very long handled screwdrivers so I am going back with one from home (this is at my work)

Dude, it doesn’t matter how long your screwdriver is. Face the door in the same orientation as the photo, stick the screwdriver through the handle opening, and grab the screwdriver with both of your hands as close to the door as possible. 🙄

I bet all he has for a "work tools" long screwdriver is some candy ass $3 Harbor Freight 10" radio screwdriver with a 1/8” thick shaft.

A grocery plastic store bag being the toolbox.

Don't talk about me this way. It hurts.

You can choke up on the screwdriver so it doesn't bend. Grab on each side as close to the door as possible and tug.

Thebandroid

Is this a joke? Hold it closer to the centre.

Use the #3 Philips.

Use the bar that goes through it.

Tug on it

Thank you! I guess I’m not doing it hard enough (the door to be specific)

CrazyLegsRyan

Sometimes it helps to use something to grip it harder or even better have a friend help you by holding it while you tug

Jam something in the back side and give it a good push

I'm not sure what we are talking about anymore.

Are you saying recalcitrant door latches are migratory?

Sometimes you need a little push from the back 😏

With no knob, it will just pull out. It’s probably just a tight fit.

With the knob fully removed its just friction holding that in. A thick screwdriver through the hole to push it like the other commenter said it the way to go. It might take some tapping and wiggling to get it moving if the wood has swelled from humidity.

I can honestly see some bite marks there, no judging.... we've all been there. Good luck OP, use tools and brains, not teeth.

I would use some vice grips and pull the hell out of it

JonJackjon

Its a pressed fit. Simply put a long screwdriver through the hole the knob shaft was in and push it out the side.

Sounds like the hole drilled in the door was slightly undersized and that latch was hammered into the door. Take a screw driver, slide it through the back of the latch (The same hole the doorknob slotted through) Then tap it sideways with a hammer until it gets shoved back out of the door.

How tight is it?

psych830 OP

It’s in there pretty tight. Tried a flat head to no avail

wkarraker

You’ve probably already figured this out but it’s a pressure fit sleeve inserted in a hole on the door. The sleeve just needs to be pushed from within the doorknob hole towards the edge. If you have a piece of wood that can fit within the doorknob hole to take up some space it will help make extraction easier. Don’t try to grab it from the door edge side, it’s much easier to move it from the other end.

smashandgrabbb

It pushes out. Insert a screwdriver behind or small pry bar to help if stuck

Total_External9870

Looks like you tried to jam something in there. Did you pry from inside the knob boring?
