A rug would really tie the room together
I plan on redecorating fully in the coming weeks, this is just the beginning
Obviously you're not a golfer
yeah dude
they peed on your rug.
Well thats just like your opinion man
lol I gotta get all new furniture I threw out all my old stuff
I believe I will hold my wife tight tonight thanks to the horrifying comments in that sub
was it just the thing to do, back in the 50s and 60s, to see a beautiful hardwood floor and just say ânaturally we will want to remodel this room and cover that dated flooring with some beautiful plastic tiles and adhesiveâ?
Literally yes. Bought my 50s home and found beautiful oak hardwood under 2 layers of carpet ( but the kitchen had vinyl tile)
My house had carpet in the kitchen. When we removed it, came a layer of vinyl tiles. Then rolled vinyl (Like vinyl tile but a big one-piece roll). Then came another layer of vinyl tile. Then came hardwood painted... pink.
Not sure what they were thinking at every step. Especially the carpet... in a kitchen...
Real Estate ad states âformerly 8ft ceilingsâ
It was just really bad tiramisu
That looks like click lock LVP, not wood, in the after shot (and in the before shot, it looks like the tile was put down over other tile). Still an improvement!
I get it, hardwood requires care that laminate doesn't and everyone was too busy being insane. Who wants to polish and wax floors when there's lead to imbibe?
Hardwood requires a lot more maintenance than laminate does not
And in a few years it will go back around to covering them up.
That's already come and gone. I've seen a few posts here and in r/homeimprovement where someone had hardwood that needed refinishing or was just golden oak color ("yucky 90s orange") so they slapped LVP over it because it's easier to take care of.
Yeah, it is a cycle. Everyone started tearing out wallpaper, and I hear it is back in fashion now.
Someone on reddit was asking about a glass brick wall the other day too.
We just bought a fixer upper and planned on ripping out the carpet and refinishing the floors. Unfortunately, the old lady that previously owned it got you the point she couldnât let the dog out regularly.
I had no idea pee stains could go so deep through hardwood. I must have taken 30+ slow passes with 30 grit over a few spot and we still had oxidation stains from that pee. I was ready to oxidize the rest of the floor to hide the spots, but the result was just too dark.
Long story short, old dog pee smells terrible when you friction heat it with a sander, and we wound up with LVP anyway.
the power of salesmen...
Get a new mattress for fucks sake!
I got the hard part out of the way now I need to refurnish lol
Walmart memory foam mattress man. They are cheap and are actually really comfortable.
Is that floor asbestos
Potentially but the adhesive does look like mastic which is asbestos containing. Obligatory, there is no way to know without sending a sample to a lab.
That said, the asbestos that could be in the tiles tends to be less hazardous when demoing as the concern comes into play when asbestos containing materials are crumbled releasing fine particles in the air. Tiles containing asbestos tend to be non-friable. Even mastic isn't a hazard per se unless you're sanding it down or something. Still want to take precautions but removing the tile in whole or large pieces and encapsulating the mastic is absolutely a DIY job assuming you keep the area sealed, clean thoroughly afterwards, wear a mask and eye protection and dispose of the debris according to local rules.
Good info thanks. I have the same tiles in my sitting room and I just covered in fear it could be! So maybe next year after our baby is born we can leave the house and get someone to rip them up.
If it is then what can I do about that? I ripped up 2 layers of tile before putting the wooden peel and stick ones. If I just cover up the asbestos is that good enough cuz it seems like thatâs how it was before
The floor looks nice
Yes it makes the room darker, but that OG blue is nice.

Itâs just peel and stick tiles
[deleted]
Yeah, but itâs not perfectly covering the floor. I ordered 2 boxes thinking it would be enough and it almost was, but the edges of the room that u canât see are still exposed
Im ordering a smaller box to finish that up anyways tho
Looks fantastic, great job man! Youâll appreciate the effort every day!
looks great. well done. window frames white would def make it pop a bit more. serious improvement
Get or make a radiator cover and you get an extra little shelf during the warm months
Radiator doesnât even work during the cold months so I might just do that
woah... save some puss for the rest of us
Wow the color change alone makes the room look bigger!
Awesome job man
I'm so fucking pumped for you dog hell yeah
Great effort. Whatâs the medal for?
You noticing that is crazy to me lol but It was from when I was on the deans list in high school, they gave it to me then. Itâs just been hanging there for years lol. The second thing hanging is my expired diamond season pass from six flags which has also been up there for years
Yikes well good luck with the mesothelioma from destroying these asbestos floor tiles
A lot of people talking about asbestos. Iâm kinda concerned but I didnât rip up any of the tiles that had that mastic adhesive on it. I simply laid new tiles over them
This renovation is asbestos it gets!
Can you explain why cuz multiple people have brought that yo
It's very possible that the tiles and/or the mastic, which is the glue that keeps the tiles on the floor has a very deadly material called "asbestos" in it. Once it is released, it really cannot be contained. Asbestos gets into your lungs and aggravates them. In time, this turns into mesothelioma, a deadly disease with no cure.
Even if I didnât sand or do anything to the mastic? I just laid new tiles over the mastic
Yeah, it's definitely still an enormous problem if that is what that was. All of the dust is potentially deadly.
The whole process didnât create much dust. I know that doesnât matter since there was probably tiny particles but do you think I should leave it as is or call a professional and get it checked out
Repainting the ceiling will make the whole room feel cleaner and brighter.
âWhatâs asbestos?â
Fake. Look at the radiator/window frame.
It looks great.Â
yeah 1st picture is just about how my room looks usually :D
Well done, looks good đÂ
it would have taken me way longer đ¤Ł
Did you check for asbestos first?
did u think to scrape the popcorn or was that not allowed?
Not allowed
Great job! Was the room given to you in the first pic? If so how did they live there before?
This was my room since 2018 with my brother and he moved out so I got it to myself now
Hell yeah, looks good. You should be proud.
Looks good....sorry about your popcorn ceiling.
Surprised you went with the blue screen of death colour
Yesssss! Well done. Looks cozy and clean.
Clean and paint the window frames as well, it'll make a huge difference. Maybe same to the radiator. It'll pop the room a bit, make it look less cave-like
Just be sure to get the right paint for the radiator if you go that route.
Is there specific paint that's meant for radiators? My first instinct would be to grab engine or grill enamel.
Based on a string of college rentals you're going to want to find a lead based paint and reapply whenever the flakes get too large for a toddler to swallow.
Any enamel paint but they are usually intended for outdoor usage. Radiator Paint is a thing and is okay for indoor (with aeration)
Bright orange engine block paint should be safe.
Paint that thing Hemi orange đ
Basically yea, you want something that can withstand the changes in temperature without flaking.
Part of the cave vibe is because of the lighting in this photo. A daytime photo or maybe just not using a naked bulb on the wall would make a difference for sure
A new sconce and bam. My work is done here.
Add curtains/blinds and a bed frame, dresser, and bedside table. And an oval carpet.
Sound advice.
