EngineBuilding

State of the Sub - What changes need to be made /r/EngineBuilding

It's been a long time, but I'm hoping to be more active as well as the other mods. We are also hunting through the 'applications' to add some new mods as well, to hopefully cut through the spam and junk you all see.

It's also time to take a look at the sub and make sure there aren't any changes we want to make. Whether that be rules added (or removed), or a thing you can think to make this a better place for all. Let us know your thoughts

force V8Packard to post how-to videos

Can we also force him to tell us which cam would be best for our setup, with out him asking pesky questions about compression or gears or engine size. We just want to know which stage we need.

I second this motion. I'll third it too.

Third it!

No suggestions, just wanted to say r/enginebuilding a cool place and my favorite sub.

Should there be more sticky posts?

mcmustang51 OP

What kind of things?

v8packard

One of the things I get asked about most, and see people confuse most, is setting valve lash or lifter preload. Another, related, is pushrod length. I still find myself explaining to people how to establish top dead center on the compression stroke. And people regularly ask about how they check bearing clearances.

Maybe it's wrong to assume people have a clear understanding of the most basic things.

No, I don’t think you’re out of line here. We’ve talked about this before and if this were another sub related to an actual make/model then the uninitiated would be expected. Even going to askmechanics or mechanicadvice subs there is still a level of generalization there.

We are VERY specific here; says it in the name “Engine Building” and if you are coming in here then you’re question (in my opinion) is going to fall into two categories; asking around and a newbie, or you’ve started the project and know a little bit (or a lot) and need simply a little extra guidance.

FAQ and sticky posts would make life a lot easier so you can simply say “go read the faq” instead of for the 1000th time explain how to obtain TDC (which….wtf V lol?!?)

v8packard

Seriously, it's so repetitive. People jump in, and they really do not know what they are doing.

DukeOfAlexandria

It’s also a little weird on some of the simpler questions….its a google search away from reputable sources. But we’ve had this convo as well, where people just….dont know how to research things anymore or read ha.

v8packard

Yes, they probably won't read the sticky

DukeOfAlexandria

Well, that’s where a sticky could come in handy or an FAQ page; just simply copy/paste the link and hit reply.

That’s drastically less time than writing up a detailed response in most cases. I know over on the E46 sub we have a decently fleshed out FAQ and it’s super easy for me to copy it and just paste and hit reply with a simple “read this” ya know?

v8packard

Yeah that's sorta what I was thinking. But, I am reconsidering that now.

Pretty sure the first change is changing the subs title to u/v8packard. Thanks for all your great work dude

Thank you, but I am just one guy. Many others beside me, and before me.

It's probably just your username that sticks out to me....but you also always dole out advice with a tone that isn't "holier than thou" or have a keyboard cowboy tone to it. That is much appreciated and missing from a lot of the internet/forum type spaces.

Need filters:

Show off, I have an oopsie, build advice, component/company review, etc

I wish there was a "good guy list" of known good performance-oriented machine shops, broken down by Province/State.

I have a short block to machine and no idea of who to take it to.

Love this idea.

This is a great idea. A stickied thread for posting positive feedback for machine shops would eventually be a great resource.

Flairs:

Euro builds, JDM builds, ‘Mercian builds, Bike builds, Misc builds, Diagnosis Help, Assembly Help, Tech Tips, Machine Work, All Noises Stop Eventually (for blown motors), and “what’s that noise” for people who don’t know where to even start, so we can be mentally prepared to give very important, very basic advice about how they should go about GETTING THEIR CAR REPAIRED. They’d select it organically which is the best part. Lol

“I AM RUNNING AN INTAKE WITHOUT A TUNE” or “I PUT BLUE DEVIL IN THE CRANKCASE” for jerkposts/humor/fuckups? Lol

Schaasbuster

I would suggest flairs. Like „need help“ „solved“ „I am an idiot“ „my build etc. And like u/v8packard suggested: sticky notes „the greatest wisdom of v8packard and others“

Other than that I love this sub and personally think it doesn‘t need too much change.

Automod for certain criterias not met such as can't create a post without "x" amount of karma points. It cuts down on trolls.

WyattCo06

Also making a post here that's just crosslinked to another sub because they don't want to create a new one is annoying.

WyattCo06

Automod, terms, key words, etc are all easily modified in Regex.

WyattCo06

Just curious as to where the rules are posted?

Is there a community on ls engine only

trogdor_999

I wish there were some sort of "curated" or sanctioned sticky posts or FAQ for basic things. As a first time engine builder, I really struggled to separate the real knowledge from the BS, and for almost every task I did I could easily find people describing different or even contradictory methods. I learned I could trust V8packard and others here, but I followed some pretty bad advice before I figured that out.

Discord channel for us to banter and argue about carburetors

If you wanna do discord then do discord. This is Reddit.

Update Rule #6. Either remove Excessive or allow self promotion. You have too many users that shit on others and think they can get away with it because of this rule. It's creating a worse community.

Let's only look at facts. I think the pursuit of being the top voted comment is really inhibiting potential conversation.

Just a suggestion.

I have only been in r/enginebuilding for less than the past month. I'd say I am an outside opinion. nothing more, nothing less.

What's your suggestion?

Willow_Sakura

Wanted to say thanks to the sub for being patient with me for answering my questions that may have already been asked in this sub. My engine rebuild had some unforseen challenges but I pushed through in my backyard build including correcting the warped block. My 402 stroker is over 1k miles and now that the tune is starting to get dialed in I couldn't be happier with the results. Without this sub I would of listened to my dad probably who gave me tons of bad info like trying tell me the valve reliefs go on the bottom side of the piston

Bulldog8018

I’m a new guy here and I’ll admit that some people don’t find this thread until they’re waist deep in an engine and looking for some input. It’s at times like that when some prepared responses would really be helpful -to both the user and the people repeatedly answering the same questions. Valve lash? Here’s the sticky. Timing chain? Here’s the sticky.

Again, I’m new. Just giving insight from Joe SixPack.

Maybe this is just me on iOS but after I create a post with pics I can’t go back and modify it?

TexPerry92

This is not a mechanical advice page. Flooded with crap like “how do i remove leftover gasket material” “is this component good” “what carburetor will look good on my engine” those types do not belong

TexPerry92

Im out. Fuck this sub. “Can these pistons be reused” (badly damaged)

Lopsided-Anxiety-679

A sticky post saying please buy or borrow a “How to build X Engine” and read it cover to cover before asking a generic how to question would be awesome, nobody seems to know how to use source material anymore.

Would it be helpful or annoying to be able to post pics in the comments? I had an occasion where I wanted to post a pic of a catalog listing for a guy on some rings but could not.
