I just completed Skirk's SQ and after experiencing it, I am more convinced that Teyvat exists within a hostile universe that is in variation on the dark forest scenario.
The dark forest hypothesis is the conjecture that many alien civilizations exist throughout the universe, but they are both silent and hostile, maintaining their undetectability for fear of being destroyed by another hostile and undetected civilization.\1]) It is one of many possible explanations of the Fermi paradox, which contrasts the lack of contact with alien life with the potential for such contact. The hypothesis derives its name from Liu Cixin's 2008 novel The Dark Forest,\2]) although the concept predates the novel.\3])\4])
Skirk's people were extinguished and their planet was razed after the visiting merchants from another world discovered that her people had unusual properties in that they could survive almost any conditions and could derive energy from any source. Their potential is what scared them.
But why? What happens when people become an unstoppable power? Surtalogi is the answer. He seems as though he has the power to destroy entire worlds, easily done especially with the aid of the All-Devouring Narwhal, but seemingly lacks the interest. But other galactic civilizations don't know that. And for sure wouldn't know if any others who emerge would come to be that level of threat.
But also more importantly perhaps the people of the merchant ships who destroyed Skirk's world did so out of fear of attracting the Abyss to their solar system due to Skirk's people's potential, which is why they felt they had to take such extreme measures.
So if the Abyss doesn't take out a budding planet, other civilizations might take the initiative to protect themselves.
--- Genshin Lagann, or pierce the heavens with your sword, Traveler! ---
The parallels between Genshin Impact and the anime Gurren Lagann are starting to become more apparent to me. **MAJOR SPOILERS FOR GURREN LAGANN*\* in the show the alien entities, the Anti-Spirals were once a species like the humans protagonists. But one day they discovered that if left unchecked, any civilization would theoretically get so powerful, it would destroy the entire universe. Hence, the Anti-Spirals sealed themselves away, and trapped the remaining human civilization underneath the surface of the earth.
In this case the Heavenly Principles created the false sky in an effort to conceal the people of Teyvat, and the loom of fate / leylines to control their abilities and powers. HP doesn't want the people of Teyvat exposed to space in any way, which is why the Khaenriahns were punished so severely, similarly to the human subjugation from the Anti-Spirals. HP even went as far as to split energy into elements so that no one person can control all energies (except the Traveler, and maybe other Descenders, and could explain why Skirk's Abyss powers were localized into Cryo, though I forget if she just chose to mask her power with that element to keep herself hidden). I also believe that Surtalogi's real reason he wants Skirk to defeat him, is that if Skirk can do that she will have the strength and determination to end the Abyss.
My thoughts are summarized as the following:
The Abyss is attracted to worlds where people have potential and consumes them, which is why other civilizations would proactively eliminate planets whose entities have great potential. HP exists to protect/control/conceal Teyvat, however the Abyss is leaking in, the fake sky / shield is failing while HP slumbers.
*Additional thoughts: I don't know if it's coincidence but I feel like Skirk's theme vibes with the theme to Gurren Lagann: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FwgMxjhXkKo
**BONUS SPECULATION I would love if this all lead up to Genshin Impact 2, where Teyvat is saved from the Abyss, but then leads to a greater conflict in the Galaxy against the Abyss, and our heroes go Spacefaring (opening up an entire new cast of characters, naturally).
Omg yes!!
Yeah but other worlds would also take a similar approach, I really doubt HP is the only one who thought of that
It's a different approach, it's oddly reminiscent to part of The Three Body Problem by Liu Cixin where planets >! shut themselves off completely using "slow zones" that slow the speed of light and render a planet invisible, possibly like Teyvat. While others just destroy civilizations outright. !<
