I got home today and opened my bedroom door to a nasty, not too strong, smell of fish. i’ve smelled every single piece of soft fabric in my room (no carpet) and nothing has the smell attached to it and none of the electrical outlets are emitting such smell. is it possible that something died in my walls?
Did you change your light bulbs recently? I had recessed lights and I didn’t use the correct type of bulb and it was slightly melting the plastic and it smelled like fish. The smell didn’t show up until I had the lights on for a little while.
I kept smelling fish the other day in my kitchen and couldn’t figure where it was coming from then I got a glass of water from our zero water filter and went to take a drink and it straight up smelled like salmon fish. I guess when the filters start to go bad they give off a fishy smell. I had to google bc it had me straight up grossed out!!
Did someone put rotting shrimp in your curtain rods? I’ve heard stories of people getting revenge by putting rotting fish/shrimp etc.. in rods and hanging them back up and then over the days the smell gets worse and worse.
Dude I JUST commented about this urban legend on another post! Wow is the algorithm freaky or what
My 1st thought was this too
Lmao no wayyy
I first read it on i think readers digest. Ex wife put shrimp in the curtain rods
Yes!!!
I had a friend put dead fish all over my dorm room. It was awful. I got mad, but she definitely won the prank war I started.
Could be electric at a switch or light or fan or other electric object besides outlets. Or a hidden junction box
Do you have pets?
That was my first thought. Cats and dogs who have problems with their anal glands will on occasion, emit this vile, repellant odor we call “fishass.” I wouldn’t Google anal glands though because the one time I did, the search came up with horrible images. Life scarring!!!
Any weird interactions with friends recently? Anyone you may have “wronged” that was in your place?
Nope lol
Test your outlets via a licensed electrician. Our old apartment had this issue. Landlord did nothing, electrical fire in the wall.
Check the electrical outlets when they are actively running something. There could be a short that only appears when a load is being put on the circuit. It smells like rotten tuna fish. We’ve also had mice die in the walls and that stinks too but more rotten flesh than fish.
Anything is possible, but inside the walls isn't the first thing I'd check unless there's some abnormal, obvious way something could get in there. Weird smells, rule out drains first. Even if there isn't an adjoining bathroom, is there one sharing a wall, or something with a drain on the floor above? And were windows open?
Tbh the house is from the 1800s so i wouldn’t be surprised if there are gaps in the refurbishment. But no bathrooms nearby or drains, and no windows open because my bedroom only has one and theres an AC in it.
Have you taken out the guards on the heating and AC ducts? I had an ex roommate that put fish underneath the carpet and in the AC ducts. I had a horrible time trying to get rid of the smell. I had to tear out the carpet because I tried to use a carpet cleaner and did not know the fish was still underneath the carpet.
For like fun or revenge?
It was a deterrent to get me to not move in. I did it anyway. For hell or high water I was going to move in. I had no choice. The rent was only $400 a month, with no deposit and no pet deposit. And it was the biggest bedroom out of a three bedroom one bath house. The kitchen, dining room and living room were community/shared rooms. I had to jump on that before someone else did. The roommate I mentioned had the house to himself for a year and the landlord said enough was enough and he needed the extra income and needed to fill the rest of the rooms. He almost evicted him over the fish episode, but the landlord decided to let him stay.
I had a lamp once we called the "tuna lamp" until we got rid of it. Check your lamps.
Maybe a raccoon in the wall?
If the drains aren't vented right it can smell.
If you have floor vents, something could be down there including your current pet's pee.
Something could be dead in the floor, walls, or ceiling. Or the ceiling vent.
I would try cutting the power to the bath for at least several hours and see where you are then.
Check the drain pan under the refrigerator.
Check the vents too
You didn't redo any drywall did you? We just recently had some repairs done and the contractor used drywall mud that had gone bad. The whole room smelled like a fish factory, and no amount of airing out got rid of the smell. Luckily we noticed it on Day 1 and only the first coat of mud, so new mud then primer and we were good to go.
Have you recently spilled chia seeds in your room? Very random, but years ago I had a bag of chia seeds open up in my car and spill into the nooks and crannies. I couldn’t get them all vacuumed up and my car smelled like rotting fish for years and in summer the heat would make the smell worse
Someone is pranking you 😂
Check the curtain rods for fish/shrimp.
Do you have a tree outside your bedroom window? There’s one in my neighborhood that smells like fish when it’s blooming
Try washing your bedding...
Believe it or not, book glue can go “rancid” and start smelling like fish. I worked in a library and caught a whiff of a putrid odor while walking in the stacks. Ironically, the book in question was Irvine Welsh’s Filth, which has a picture of a pig on the cover (I swear on my cats’ lives this was the book). I took it to the preservation librarian, who explained the glue in the binding can spoil. Wild!
it wasn’t your wife or girlfriend was it? Lol
Is it possible you or a pet got a UTI?
Could it be raw fish under a cheating partner's mattress?
Your ac is covered in feces. Maybe that has something to do with it?
A bottle of Summer's Eve should clear that right up.
It’s usually the wife’s underwear
If girls are made of sugar and spice, how come they smell like tuna?
I new a girl
Possible, but I would get an electrician asap just in case it’s electrical in the walls.
This! Smoldering electrical fires can smelly fishy.
Also, wet insulation can smell similar
Or you could just shut off the breaker and see what happems before calling an electrician.
This is the most cost effective way.
I had a switch for an electric shower. Couldn't pin point this fishy smell.
It was the switch.
