What the heck is this??

Showed up a few months ago. No water damage. Ceiling is firm and we’ve been in the attic and confirmed there’s no leak. It doesn’t seem to be spreading, but the paint peeling is new. This is in our kitchen, not directly above our stove, but a couple feet away from it, we have no hood vent (I have a lot of beef with whoever designed this kitchen, honestly). We’re assuming it’s mold, but since there’s no water damage from above and it’s not like it’s directly over where I’m cooking, and it’s not spreading, we’re kind of at a loss as to where it came from.

It sure looks like a water damage leak to me. Water can come and go as building materials swell up they can stop a leak. So if there is a long dry spell and then a rain, water can come through a crack in wood and then the wood will swell and stop the leak. Look at the underside of the roof in that area and see if you see any stains particularly circular stains.

There’s definitely no leak. We just had our roof fixed in a very different spot after Helene and they inspected the rest of the roof. We also have sawdust in the attic so a leak would be very obvious.

Anybody playing with aerosol whipped cream? We had a wild party one time and discovered that if you point the whipped cream up it makes a Splat on the ceiling!

Cant imagine anything else but water damage. Perhaps insulation/ something else is doing some funny channeling of the water. Leak would obviously be higher up, but not necessarily directly above that stain.
