This thread is for general MapPorn discussion. Exchange ideas, ask for maps, talk about cartography, etc. Have a thought that doesn't fit in another thread, post it here.
This sub used to be all America all the time, which was annoying enough; now it is all low-quality South Asia maps all the time, and the comments flooded by Hindu Nationalists. So much for 'must meet aesthetic standards' when highly pixelated and compressed maps that have been posted 100s of times are reshared once more
Agreed. I'm considering posting 14 Pakistan maps a day just to mess with them, seeing as apparently there's nothing preventing low quality spam in this sub.
I tried posting some soccer and topography related stuff... got suck waiting for moderator review
Are ChatGPT creations considered "low effort"?
Generally, yes
Why are there no requirements that maps provide sources for their content? Most of the maps I see here have "trust me bro" vibes with zero attempt to explain where they obtained their data.
That's what I wrote in another comment in this thread as well. It's broderline spreading misinformation via maps...
It's not borderline at all. It's straight up misinformation
What's interesting is I never get comments on my sources, even when I don't include them (rare). People will say they tried to click my source and it didn't work. Like bro, it's an image you gotta type the source.
Meta: can we somehow only allow maps that have sources and do basic checks for correctness? I've just seen a map regarding the legality of denying the holocaust and according to the map, in Israel, it's no biggie to deny it. If you consider maps a tool to acquire information people would be spreading misinformation all the time on this subreddit.
I use QGIS and ArcMap for my maps, but I've seen such great work here that I have to ask—especially those maps with little pie charts inside each division—which program do you use to make them?
You might look into R or Python as far as programming languages go. Some people also use JavaScript to visualize maps. Each language has multiple frameworks to accomplish everything you could probably imagine. I know it's a very vague answer but I think there are not too many applications with GUIs outside of QGIS and ArcMap to create maps. Also QGIS goes a very long way if you're proficient enough (I'm not).
Love these map discussions, always so enlightening!
Can we please have a map of where the newest bands are from?? Random ik but interestingggg
Wow, the discussions here are wilder than I expected!
I saw a MapPorn map of Canada including the US states of Washington, Oregon and California. But scrolling down forever I have yet to find it. Can anyone provide a link to it here?
That's actually kinda cool to see
Can't wait to see all the creative map ideas this month!
Oh, the map obsession continues! Love the community vibe here.

Has this sub fallen? It's all israel-palestine content now with a hard bend to the Palestine side.
I am concerned this sub has fallen under the same influence that a handful of legacy subs have recently fallen into which is just a constant barrage of posts about the conflict.
I think there is a time and place for those discussions and occasionally having a few here is fine. But lately these seem to be the only posts.
Regardless, I want to get back to interesting maps not maps in the news.
Waiting for a bit until this all blows over should fix it for you. The sub is prone to thematic posting for a length of time, but it doesn't tend to be super long.
Though I also wouldn't say there's been too much Israel stuff: the events are very big and important, and so merit discussion, and yet there are many other posts too, so not all oxygen on the sub is sucked out.
Until it blows over lol
Same. I’ve just been seeing rage bait over and over.
I mean the circlejerk subreddit is straight mossad astroturfing so
