I don't think it was common ages ago. It's just because of the poet Sapho who was attracted to the girls she was teaching to. If I remember it correctly from Greek in highschool anyway.

So actually English speakers have been mispronouncing Lesbos. In Greek it sounds like Lesvos because the Greek beta has a 'v' sound. To the point that they've started to use Lesvos when writing the island name in English because they've been really annoyed at the connection.
It was already called ΞΞΟΞ²ΞΏΟ in Ancient Greek when the Ξ² was still pronounced as βbβ, and thatβs where the English name comes from. So itβs not a mispronunciation, really.

Aas regards the Turkish flag of occupied north, Self determination does not apply when its an occupier/invader who declares it. Only Turkey recognises it because its a Turkish state they slowly annex
