Guess what country is missing out on the sunlight.
at least they are in this map

Their eyes are closed. According to my 3-year-old, that means they are invisible.
Here's a sneak peek of /r/mapswithnewzealandbut using the top posts of the year!

PNG, Australia, Tuvalu, Vanuatu, Palau, Nauru, Solomon Islands, Marshall Islands, Fiji, Tonga, Samoa, Timor-Leste, Micronesia, Kiribati and that's it.
New Zealand?
That's not a real country. Have you seen how many times they forget to add it to a map? Would you really forget it that much if it was a real country? Next you'll tell me you believe birds are real.
There are a lot of birds in New Zealand. Coincidence?
They literally refer to themselves as Kiwis, which is a type of “bird.” Coincidence? I think not.
They are so busted!!
Birds are real, there's fossil records.
Not the current impostors, but they used to rule the world.
Niue, Cook Islands, Tokelau.
Half of Indonesia
Just curious, do you get even more sunlight exposure in June 21st across the world?
i was thinking the same thing
but the sun would be higher towards the north, not necessarilly including more land, since siberia and alaska are already included in this image, and you might lose some in the south like chile/argentina and south east asia islands
Do you mean 99% of populated places or something?
Because 99% of the world is never illuminated by sunlight at one time.
On this map, 3% of the population is in astronomical twilight, 6% is in nautical twilight, and 7% is in civil twilight. So, it's only about 83% of the population in sunlight.

Yeah, and population, as you said correctly. Not "of the world". OP thinks the pacific ocean is on Mars or what
From experience though in civil twilight it is still light outside, even with light pollution. Most people would say it is properly night at the end of civil twilight. Unless you are into it or live in a non light polluted area you probably can’t tell it’s nautical twilight and you definitely can’t tell it’s astronomical (even stargazers struggle). So I would say it’s fair to say that 90% are experiencing daylight.
I disagree by the technical definition – daylight doesn't include twilight. But I get what you mean and agree people are at least aided by indirect sunlight during civil twilight. Most don't regard that period as full night. "White night" is used for nights that don't go beyond civil twilight, and I like to use "blue night" for nights that don't go beyond nautical twilight.
However, according to the linked Time and Date article, including just civil twilight would give the June solstice the most population coverage. At least daylight alone still gives July 8 more coverage. But it's also true that astronomical twilight is doing some moderate lifting for July 8.
Ultimately, this gets people to think about geography and astronomy, which is nice. But we might agree it's a misdemeanor to regard astronomical twilight as daylight.
Misdemenour or outright felony lol.
That's really awesome!
....and a few in fleshlight
If this is accurate, it'd have to be a very close squeeze. 281 million people live in Indonesia alone, and it's partially in the dark here (and its capital is only barely in the semi-dark zone). In general, that tiny semi-dark zone in south-east Asia must be doing some heavy lifting, as 450-500 million people live there (Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines and a few others). That's about 16% of the world's population tucked into that spot.
It's actually crazy to realize that Indonesia's population almost rivals that of the U.S.
Yea it’s only about 90% experiencing daylight (assuming civil twilight which is the lightest band.) Especially with light pollution nautical and astronomical twilight just look like night.
And none for Gretchen Wieners Australia and New Zealand. Bye.
24 hours for you, Jan Mayen! You go Jan Mayen!
Can confirm I got daylight.
Interesting definition of the word "world"
Thank you
"We are the World"🎵🎶
Why today and not the Solstice?
Not longest or shortest day.
Because the sun is further south now, so there is more daylight in the heavily populated equatorial areas.
Oceans are the world, just sayin.
oh man I missed it :(
Hello everyone that is awake right now
Not 99% in terms of landmass, obviously.
So it must be population wise and that means New Zealand and Australia (and Papua and whatnot) are totally empty.
The day/night boundary is marked by this isoline. The further shades are already at nighttime with varying stages of twilight (civil, nautical and astronomical).
Given that the Philippines, Japan, Korea, coastal China, Indonesia, as well as Mexico and western US and lots of other areas are already at nighttime, I'd estimate the fraction of population in daylight is closer to 85%-90%, not 99%.
Time and date did the calculations. 83% are in true daylight and 7% in civil twilight, so it’s probably about 90%, given it’s basically dark at the end of civil twilight.
4:15 AM in California. We missed it too.
Guess who's part of the 1 percent
this is so beautiful
This is why I visit this sub
Not in Schell City Missouri, United States. Today (my birthday by the way) the sun went down around 8:30 and 9: 30pm.
So…enjoy the night off, Australia, I guess?
I wonder what this would look like on a flerf map.
Wow I remember the same thing happened in 2021
[deleted]
Population-wise that's probably 99%
Its by population.
Indonesia being 4th most populated and partially in the dark makes me skeptical.
Most of Indonesia’s population is in the western part.
Hmm fair enough! Super interesting map :)
You are misinterpreting the map. Most (almost all) of Indonesia is already at night. See this comment.
Indonesia's population is largely concentrated to the west, particularly on the island of Java.
Helios/Ra/Surya bros.....we just won
I don't get it, that doesn't look like 99%, more like in the 60s
At the risk of being pedantic, that's not 99% of the world. The ocean is part of the world. In fact, the ocean is most of the world. That is where 99% of the human race lives. But the world doesn't revolve around us.
What is UTC?
Universal coordinated time. New name for greenwich mean time. (Uk standard time)
Ah, cool. Got it. Hadn't even realised it was no longer GMT. Thank you
Thanks for letting us know, 6 hours after the fact.
Oh well there is always next year.
Are you a Ferrari fan?
We are checking.
Must be the water.
What would you have done if you knew at the time anyway?
