I wonder how many people in those subs actually live in the respective countries. There's no chance in hell that 7.76% of people in the UK are on that sub and that isn't the most extreme example

I saw Ireland and instantly knew it’s gotta be hordes of Americans inflating the numbers

Edit: someone calculated Scotland’s to be 10.6%. No doubt the same scenario there

cowplum

Just a note that r/ireland is for anyone living on the island of Ireland and this map likely used the population statistic for the Republic of Ireland. But yes, a lot of American diaspora there.

Vorlitix

this same phenomenon happens with american state subreddits, look at r/wyoming for example; like 10% of the people on that sub actually live in wyoming, same with like r/texas

Norse_By_North_West

I'm in the Yukon, population 40k or so. Our subreddits has 18k members.

It's probably 90% bots. It feels like most subs member counts have exploded in the last few years, and I don't think reddit has become that much more popular.

I guess r/iceland are mostly tourists

That's r/Finland, not r/Suomi as it should be.

premature_eulogy

Yeah with r/Suomi the percentage is over 10%.

jjw1998

r/Ireland gets skewed by the amount of Yanks LARPing as Irish people cause their grand pappy is a quarter Irish

Turkey-Scientist

I’m sure that’s also why Scotland comes in at 10.6%

Honestly, we don’t use it as a derogatory term. It’s just faster than “American”.

hallerz87

Its not derogatory, its just slang.

Nikkonor

I use it for lack of a better term.

(American, USian, US-American, etc. are all sub-optimal.)

Which subreddit was used for Germany? Neither r/deutschland nor r/germany fit

Select-Stuff9716

Probably r/de which is just in general for the German speaking countries/communities but essentially works as the German subreddit. Deutschland is too small and Germany doesn’t feel like it has many Germans (And is English-speaking too)

hoi4kaiserreichfanbo

r/de fits.

harryoldballsack

should be 1.2% maximum

Alone_Yam_36

Just for comparison. My country Tunisia is at 0.88% and it’s one of the highest in its region and continent. So these numbers are very high

its crazy how r/Iceland has 94K members but r/VisitingIceland has 819K

Ireland is probably more taking into account its an all-island subreddit

JourneyThiefer

The 15% is it with the whole island population lol

Just realised. Although considering the amount of yanks on that sub….

Wonder which sub is used.

Based on the percentage and a quick search for "netherlands" communities I think r/thenetherlands with about 1.4m members

I would be interested to know what Scotland, England, Northern Ireland, and Wales are specifically

Clean-Cheesecake4526

Ok if my maths are right, these are it

England

0.58%

57,106,398 people and r/England have 336k members

Scotland

10.61%

5,490,000 people and r/Scotland have 583k members

Wales

9.51%

3,290,000 people and r/Wales have 313k members

Northern Ireland

16.57%

1,900,000 people and r/NorthernIreland have 315k members

Alone_Yam_36

England is low because most of England is on r/unitedkingdom

Clean-Cheesecake4526

Yeah makes sense

JourneyThiefer

Northern Ireland is also higher because people from Republic of Ireland are also in it

And somehow every single sub probably thinks they represent the majority of people. Reddit is basically an echo chamber

Truelz

Reddit is basically an echo chamber

Any kind of group, small or large, real-life or on the internet will be an echo chamber to some degree... We tend to seek out likeminded people even without thinking about it.

Huge_Friendship_6435

Why commas instead of dots? But good map though.

jon3ssing

Different countries have different mathematical standards.

Where I'm at, dots and commas are "reversed" compared to what I assumed is your default.

Huge_Friendship_6435

And yet this sub goes crazy if India uses lakhs insteads of millions.

AmonGusSus2137

Because all the lakhs crores and whatever they use besides that is an uniquely Indian thing and it's confusing for everyone else, what can't be said about commas and dots because if somebody has at least half a brain cell they can figure it out

Huge_Friendship_6435

More like your just have a racist brain, which a lot of people have here.

AmonGusSus2137

Buddy what the hell are you talking about? What is racist in saying that a thing that is uniquely used and known in one country is confusing to everyone else?

Huge_Friendship_6435

Its basic numbers. You have a problem with some commas in numbers but not others. Thats racist.

AmonGusSus2137

Lakhs and crores aren't basic numbers for the majority of people in the world, commas and dots are basically the same and if someone has a brain they can easily figure out they can replace each other in some numbers.

Huge_Friendship_6435

Similar they can read between commas when given numbers. Don’t need to be racist about it.

randomname560

Its basic numbers for you, because you are used to them

For the rest of the world it is unnecesarily confusing, same complain people have whit miles and farenheit

You are not getting downvoted because of racists, you are getting downvoted because you are getting this basic concept explained to you and you keep insisting that not knowing exactly how a system that 1 country uses works is somehow racist

Huge_Friendship_6435

Which it is. You can read numbers without commas right for some countries but not others.

Usual_Ad6180

Thats because not everyone knows that. It's not hard to see they used commas instead of decimals, so you get the exact same idea. If you've never heard of lakh then how are you supposed to know the measurements?

Huge_Friendship_6435

But they represent a number still 6,00,000 is still six hundred thousand. There is no difference in this case as well unless it is blatent racism.

fartingbeagle

Sorry, preferring a system the world uses over one used only in one country is racism now? Are you really going to defend this statement?

Huge_Friendship_6435

Yes it is racist. You can understand basic numbers and if commas dont bother you for this map, they shouldnʻt here as well.

Public-Eagle6992

No it’s not you’re just making shit up

Huge_Friendship_6435

No this is literal facts. Racists love living in racism land.
