Can I change my own spark plugs/coils?

On the way to work my 2013 Hyundai Elantra started shaking a bit and after I parked it in the lot would not start up again. When I took my lunch break it started and I took it to the nearest place from my work with good reviews. They’re saying to replace my spark plugs and coils would be $815. Is this ridiculous? Would it be feasible for me to buy my own spark plugs and put them in my self?

Yes it should be pretty easy with minimal tools and experience.

Didn't watch the video but in case it doesn't mention it you are going to need a spark plug socket. While you could try using a deep socket it would be much harder and risky. They are cheap and well worth the money. You also want a torque wrench that fits that socket so you can tighten the plug correctly. Also depending on the engine and car you will want a socket extension.

Before tightening the plug thread it backwards until you hear a click to make sure you aren't cross threaded.

You also need a gap gauge. Essential tool to ensure it’s done correctly.

The "wire" type, NOT the round "wedge" type.

4 cylinder cars are very easy to replace spark plugs with the right tools. Some V6s can be tricky needing to remove stuff to access the plugs but some are easier like the Honda J35.

Yes spark plugs and coils is pretty easy even if you’re not mechanically inclined.. I’m sure there’s plenty of videos on YouTube for your vehicle

On a, what I assume to be, an Inline 4? Yea. That's ridiculous. Most I4s take about 20-30min max when changing the plugs and coil packs. Dunno if your car has one big coil pack or four individual ones, but still an easy job either way.

If you're worried, just find a video of someone doing plugs on your vehicle o youtube. Other than a possible terrible design, they should be very easy and a good job for a beginner!

Just be sure to get the right kind of plugs and don't cheap out on the coil packs or you'll just be replacing one soon down the road.

Good luck!

I'd wager of the $800 quoted only $200 is labor. Coils are expensive from a part store

Your car probably only needs spark plugs.

Ignition coils are not a wear item that need to be replaced like spark plugs. Coils should be replaced when they fail, or when a bench test shows them to be getting weak.

Coil plug boots for your car are available separately and those should be replaced along with the spark plugs.

Second this without a misfire I wouldn't be poking at it first and agree do the plugs and wires

I forgot to make my point that OP might legitimately need 1 or 2 coils, but replacing all 4 is just sloppy diagnostic work.

Easy job. If you don’t have tools, pick up a spark plug socket from Harbor Freight, watch a couple YouTube videos, and you’ll be good. The most important part is going to be not over torquing the spark plugs when you install them. Specification is 10 - 18 ft lbs, which isn’t a whole lot. You wan them nice and firm, but don’t Incredible Hulk them! If you really crank down on them you’ll likely cause much much bigger problems for yourself.

Also, don’t cheap out and buy autolite or some other garbage spark plug. Get something decent.
