James - ā€œGlad you showed upā€

comeymierda

I'm sure they bust eachothers chops every now and then. However they've certainly grown as individuals.

Lets all try to make out what they're saying....

James: Hey man glad you showed up lol remember those fucking riots...

Axl: Nah I left early.....

Pause.

They both burst out into laughter.

I know James did say something like "they way they did things showed us what not to do"
Then Jason said they went to GnR/Axl's dressing room to ask what was wrong and he was drinking some wine and smoking a cigarette just chilling and said his throat hurts. Don't remember the quote you said, but I can see either one of them saying and thinking that

That was Jason in Behind the Music about the pyro incident

OrpheusNYC

I remember Kirk talking about that specific incident with Axl on a VH1 special years and years ago and getting hopping mad about it.

Illustrious-Line-773

Axl was having serious throat issues at the time, which eventually required surgery to remove polyps.Ā  It had nothing to do with his consumption of tobacco or alcohol.Ā  GNR completed their contractually obligated time that night.Ā  The sound was bad and Axl's throat was fucked and he just couldn't give any more.Ā  Anyway, according to GNR's then manager Doug Goldstein, Lars was to blame for screwing with the pyro cues in order to make himself more visible.

timidobserver8

Hey, Axl!

Illustrious-Line-773

Here's the interview with Goldstein. Read it for yourself:

2015.04.05 - One On One With Mitch Lafon - Interview with Doug Goldstein

Q: "So we go back a couple of weeks, Axl had taken three or four shows off because of his voice, show up in Montreal, Faith No More does their set, Metallica comes on, fire happens, James gets burned. Now, you suggested in a previous conversation to me that that was somewhat of Metallica's own mistake because they had changed the configuration of the set."

Goldstein: "Yeah, what ended up happening, and, you know, Lars is a great guy, whatever, but the reality is Jake Berry, who was Metallica's production manager, and Lars unbeknownst to the rest of us, they took the set that we were collectively using, which had metal grading so you could see through the stage...So Lars is... I'm told, the reason why he does it is because the first 50 rows, their sight lines are impaired, they can't see Lars. And so instead of the monitors, the wedges that the band uses to hear themselves, instead of them being on top of the deck, he puts some sub deck underneath and in doing so some of the pyro cues for Metallica had to be changed. So I've never heard, now was it explained to James? And he forgot? Or was it just never communicated to him? But in either case, that's why James blew up. He was standing on a pyro cue that before that had not been a pyro cue...

And by the way, what Axl was doing in the off time was seeing a guy named Dr. Hans Von Leden, who was the president of the orencology [?] association internationally. He was like this 92 year old guy, worked out of UCLA, and when everybody else was saying operate on singers, this guy was figuring a way to get them to not operate. So Axl's seeing him because we had canceled some shows and we come back, we agreed to do Montreal primarily because Metallica's saying, you know, "We can't wait anymore and we're just gonna fucking do these shows without you if that's what it takes."

So, under pressure from Metallica, Axl did the show when he really shouldn't have because his throat issues were serious enough that he was consulting a specialist, he struggles through, completes his contractually-obligated time on stage and then the chuds in the audience riot because it just wasn't enough for them and because Lars Ulrich's vanity and carelessness got his bandmate lit up, and somehow Axl's the bad guy? How about blame the assholes in the audience for their temper tantrum, how about blame Lars for not letting his bandmate know that the fucking pyro had changed?! How about some personal responsibility? No, let's just blame Axl. Pathetic.

And then, through Behind the Music, Jason Newsted spreads this canard that Axl's problems were due to his drinking and smoking (as if nearly every other singer in rock doesn't smoke and drink!). How the fuck would Jason Newstead know about Axl's health issues? He's wasn't important enough to be privy to that information. I mean, his own band wiped his bass playing off an entire fucking album!

Alienmonkeyfuck

I was telling my brother that yesterday. Just do the ā€œit’s so easyā€ verse voice and hire some badass chick to stand behind the 2nd guitar player and sing the high parts. No shame in that. I’m guessing that soon… With AI voice mapping, they will be able to use imprints taken from old recordings to mix in the voice from a singer’s prime, as an effect in real time- sort of like auto tune. Some ppl won’t use it because it’ll be considered cheating but some will embrace it for the sake of the show. We’re gonna see some resurrected careers once this tech proliferates.Ā

SSAUS

He can still sing on fast rock tracks or where his baritone is required, but the power behind his upper register is shot and this is most noticeable on ballads or slower rock tracks. If GNR brought their songs down a couple of keys instead of playing original, and if Axl reworked some of his natural vocals into the songs that require it, he would definitely benefit.

therealburndog

This would require more humility than Axl would allow.

Traps86

I think he needs back up singers to be honest, they can hit the high stuff and he stays low

Yeah, there are a number of things he could do to help. GNR does have a keyboardist who helps out on some high notes at least. It works okay on Pretty Tied Up for example.

GnR superfans have been calling it the "Mickey" voice for a while as he sounds like Mickey Mouse. If you listen to the beginning of Paradise City yesterday it literally sounds like Mickey Mouse...but most of his songs have been like that for a while now. He was about as good as you can expect in 2016 and after a couple-few years of touring and getting older.....it's not been great. I went to Powertrip and that wasn't a great vocal performance. Previously when he got rested he sounded great. But when not rested (and hopefully not permanently) he sounds like someone who's trying to sing in a high octave who can't....it just doesn't sound good. GnR die hards have said he lowered his octave a couple notches a couple years ago and did much better.

I will say the best vocal performance I've heard in my entire life was Axl when he was with AC/DC. Man sounded like a damn chainsaw, it really was incredible.

Why some say he destroyed his voice singing AC/DC but I think he still sounds good when he decides to use his lower register like on Bad Obsessions, Knocking on heavens door and parts of Estranged. I don't know if he can't do it the who show as he so often chooses to sing in falsetto, to be fair not many can sing that much in falsetto but it just doesn't sound that good as he's lost power.

jlplr

maybe the AC/DC gigs hastened the damage? It sounded like he had to dig deep to reach those sustained highs of those songs.

jeffh19

He’s kinda between a rock and a hard place though. If he cut all the songs that require him to use that falsetto, they wouldn’t have much of a setlist left. I agree I personally would love to see him lean more into the deep cuts that utilise that incredible midrange of his, but the everyday Joe wants to hear jungle, sweet child and paradise so what are they to do? People say he could give up but honestly, not so easy to just hang it up when he clearly still loves doing it.

iObama

He sings in falsetto in the same octave the songs are in. It makes him sound like Mickey, but it also allows him to still have any semblance of a voice, unlike Paul Stanley who continued to screech and gargle razor blades until the very final KISS show.
