I saw Metallica open for ozzy on 1986 on thru master of puppets tour. First bog arena concert.
If I’m not mistaken, the ‘86 tour with Ozzy was the last time Metallica has ever opened for anyone (excluding the GnR co-headline tour where they alternated, but both were technically headliners).
So, it was only fitting that Metallica came out of “opening act retirement” for Ozzy at his farewell show.
Didn’t ozzy say that metallica stole the show from him?
Everyone said Metallica stole the show from him, not just Ozzy.
Opened for ACDC twice. At the Moscow show and at Donington in 1991, plus the Stones shows.
You can’t count those big one of stadium festivals the same way as an opening on a full tour.
They opened for AC/DC on the entire Monsters of Rock tour in 1991. Moscow was latest show on tour, though.
https://metallica.fandom.com/wiki/Monsters_of_Rock_%2791#Tour_Dates
Saw them open for AC/DC in Denmark 2 days before the release of the Black Album 😃
Metallica opened for Rolling Stones in 2005.
And in 1992 for the Freddy Mercury Tribute
Well fuck they certainly didn’t here in toronto
ahh, good call! I forgot that one.
As someone who's second favorite band is The Stones, this would've been an awesome show.
We flew to San Francisco to see that show that was a great week that was back when I was still drinking and doing all the other fun stuff. we had a blast and that show was a trip. It was like five generations of people there it was hilarious.
Not to mention half of their bassists have played for Ozzy and Black sabbath in the past
Untrue. In 1991 they opened their minds for A Different View
Ahaaa
Thanks, that might be the dumbest thing I've said in a while
Probably. I missed “And Justice For All” tour.
I was at that show at the cow Palace in San Francisco in 86. I can’t believe that was almost 40 years ago.
They played before AC/DC at the famous Moscow ‘91 show.
They also played the Live Earth show in London about half way up the bill in 2007.
That was the 1st time I saw them too on The Ultimate Sin tour in ‘86 07-21 🤘🍻
I caught that tour as well! So much fun.
I was in seventh grade. My father drove us there and someone else’s parents picked us up.
Of course if everyone stays healthy
They are the biggest metal band, ever. Bigger than ozzy/sabbath
Gotta mention though it was definitely poetic with Metallica being part of the send off since they were the ones that got the honor of inducting Black Sabbath to the rock hall of fame. And also them being the second metal band ever inducted after Black Sabbath.
The send off for Metallica will be interesting. Not many I’d say could carry that torch as well
Bigger but Sabbath is the start and by default the most influential. If anything the lack of younger bands getting big will most likely mean Sabbath’s send off will be bigger.
Of course sabbath was the most influential, they created the damn genre
Metallica's send off will have Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, Kelly Clarkson, Papa Roach, Godsmack and Nickelback
Metallica playing Moth Into Flame with Lady Gaga was awesome!
But you definitely forgot limp Bizkit and blink 182 is that list of artists ;)
Sum 41 snubbed as well
Unironically Sum 41 would come out of retirement for something like this
I know this'll get downvoted to hell, but Miley Cyrus for sure as well.
Godsmack catching strays
Jeez ....cut my life into pieces that sounds like a last resort
Sad but true
And that Ja-rule song one last time
You think megadeth will get snubbed?
I think Metallica might play in Megadeth sent off
You say that like its a bad thing
I think you are underestimating Metallica’s influence. They are as influential as Sabbath.
Black Sabbath literally invented the genre.
Yes but Metallica are as influential. Pretty much every prog metal and metal band that started after 90s were mainly influenced by Metallica and James Hetfield.
Once could argue that, individually, Ozzy is more famous than any member of Metallica. His fame easily goes beyond metal circles.
Could argue? I don't really think there's a case against it, at least among people my age (early 30s) and older. He has Sabbath, his solo career, his various off-stage antics, his reality TV work, Ozzfest, and his larger-than-life indestructible persona. You can get a pretty good handle on Ozzy without listening to a single thing he's ever recorded.
I know people who don't know the name Metallica, but have heard of Ozzy. So yes, definitely.
You also have boomers 70+ who's only metal band they listen to is Sabbath since they were big around the same time as Zeppelin, The Who, and Deep Purple.
An event like this seems very healthy-dependent for Metallica specifically and I’m not sure they’re gonna call it quits before their health declines to a point they straight up can’t perform.
I don’t think these guys are gonna be able to get up there and play their music in the state the Sabbath guys just were, simply because of the speed/technicality of the music in question. I love Sabbath but their songs (especially their hits) are slow and simple enough to allow them to still play them even when Ozzy and Bill can barely move. James and Lars ain’t doing that with Master of Puppets.
Not to say I think the end is coming soon, given their current ability I think they’ve easily got another 5-10 years of this in them, if not more. But just not sure I see this same kind of “final performance” in the cards for them.
Yeah thats what i fear most. "Luckily" with ozzy its "just" parkinsons and nothing more serious. And he is "only" a vocalist.
Metallica will never stop, never quit, cause theyre metallica.
Of course something slow like parkinsons or early spotted dementia, they would have enough time to plan a goodbye show. The worst would be an emergency of some sort.
Bill may look like a tubby old sack, but he was out there bashing it up. He's still got the capabilities.
MegaDave and McGovney are still available to get the original 4 back on stage.
Booking my ticket from now.
I don't understand the point of comparing bands with numbers. Taylor Swift is the biggest artist in the world right now, and more influential. Does that make her better than Metallica in your opinion? Art is not about numbers.
I never ever ever said that. But your underground pornogrind band simply doesnt have the fanbase (or media coverage) to do something like sabbath did.
Metallica is the band. Just like elvis was the rockstar. Or beatles. Everyone knows about them. Your average taylor swift listener probably knows nothing else matters.
Ozzy never put out anything as mediocre as st anger tho
Its hard to sat, because so many bands claim to do a farewell tour but then come back for one off shows or even whole tours, so I think alot of fans are cynical about true "farewells".
What makes Ozzy different is that given his health, it is very easy to believe he will not tour again. He tried so hard to finish off his last tour but finally had to cancel, and when you see that it was an effort to perform what he did on Saturday, you do get the feeling it's the end of his performing days. Thus, they could plan a proper farewell.
Scorpions did that as well. They did a “farewell tour” for two years between 2010 and 2012.
Currently they are doing their 60th year tour 😒

Looking at you, Judas Priest!
Did Priest do a farewell tour? I don't recall that. I do know they were fuckin great when I saw them in 2021
Epitaph tour
Yes, the Epitaph Tour of 2011-2012 was supposed to be their farewell tour when K.K. Downing left the band.
They were fucking great last year. I’ve always loved both bands but I did not see Priest churning out good albums this late in the game. Would have been great to see them at the concert last weekend.
Hard to say how that will go because the dynamics are so different. Sabbath had the pioneering element. It’s also easier to be nostalgic when their initial run was limited to 10 years followed by sporadic reunions.
Metallica has been so prolific, present and constant that there almost seems to be an underlying jealousy in the community. It also seems rare for any newer groups to admit they were influenced by them even when it’s very obvious in their music.
Maybe that all changes when the time comes. Hard to predict.
Yea I honestly don’t see how it could ever go down like the Sabbath reunion. Metallica has been a constant, there would be no “holy shit” factor to them doing a show. And the way BTTB really tied in the city of Birmingham, and featured various metal bands from all different eras could never really be replicated for Metallica. It wouldn’t be the same dedicating something like that to a band that didn’t even release their debut until nearly a decade after Sabbath had already released half a dozen genre-breaking masterpieces.
They would certainly deserve it but I don’t want to think about that just now.
I really hope so (seeing what the only reasons for not getting one would be).
Metallica always have been and still are one of the greatest live bands out there. They still give you the passion and energy of dudes 30 years younger than they are now.
And in my opinion they still continue to add amazing songs to their catalogue, so there’s always something new to look forward to (their white whale called Inamorata for example).
They deserve to leave the stage with the biggest of bangs and with enough showing of love and respect from the whole music business to make any grown man cry.
Seeing the sendoff Ozzy and Sabbath got, Metallica would almost have to leave with a three day festival.
| Metallica would almost have to leave with a three day festival
Download Festival 2045
Just Metallica for all three days.
Called „Don’t Download“ for that one year
You wouldn't steal a festival ...😎
There's only one answer: YEAH!
I think you meant "Ooooooh Yeah-eah!"
They will. even in their 30 years anniversary the people who couldnt stand them like Dave or Jason showed up and celebrated it.
No, they will continue to play until they fall off the stage.
I feel like they wouldn't want all the pomp and circumstances of a big send off.
Is there money to be made? Yes? Then yes. Yes they will.
I doubt they'll do what's basically a one day festival but they'll definitely have a massive show for whenever their final show ends up being.
We'll never stop, we'll never quit, 'cause we're Metallica
YAY-YEAH! [Hetfield voiced]
Yes they will.. i believe that GNR will also get a tribute similar to Black Sabbath..
Their place in history warrants that…but honestly they’ve (ok really Axl) probably burned tons of bridges.
Imagine if Axl Rose got mad at his own farewell concert and cancelled it.
He’s come on stage the next night trying to make people wait lol.
I have this maybe crazy notion that a couple of incidents in the 90s gave the guy a bit of an undeserved rep.
Or maybe it was deserved at the time, and he's taken stock of himself and changed?
I don't think so. They broke up for a long time and haven't really done much since Chinese Democracy.
Yes, but back in the day they released some of the most iconic rock tunes ever. November rain, sweet child o mine, paradise City to name a few. There are many more. Only in 6 years, with a smaller discography, they have made a global impact with their music.
I don't think you need hundreds of songs..
Metallica definitely is getting a similar tribute and I can see Avenged sevenfold, Gojira, Ghost and Bullet for my Valentine performing in that tribute concert.
I don't know. GnR is like that athlete that had a hall of fame stretch for 5 or 6 years but then had a horrible injury that caused them to miss a few years, but never came back the same.
That's fine man, they still are one of the best bands in the world. Their live performances these days aren't as good as metallica's, but I still love them.
Cheers..
As much as I love GNR I don't know man.. They have like 4 albums and one EP and out of those no one really thinks of Chinese as "essential" GNR.
Metallica's legacy is easily greater and more worthy of a big send off.
And I say this as a big GNR fan.
GnR don't have a very big discography for a varied tribute. How many albums have they done?
Guns N Roses have produced some of the most iconic rock tunes we've ever listened to.
You don't need every band to cover their song in the tribute show. In the Freddie Mercury tribute concert in Wembley stadium in 1992, both GNR and metallica played, but they didn't cover queen songs. Only Axl and James Hetfield joined different other artists to cover some iconic Queen songs.
They should but there really isn’t any good bands to send them off unless it’s their peers . Gojira , ghost and slipknot wouldn’t cut it for me . I’m in the boat of it started with Black Sabbath and it pretty much will end with them . Rock music in general has been not good for awhile .
Bfmv, trivium, In flames, killswitch engage, parkway drive, all of them have dabbled in metallica covers at some point.
Would love to see more Trivium in the world.
Compared to the likes of The Rolling Stones, Aerosmith, Pantera, Metallica, ratm, Alice In Chains, GNR, etc. all of those bands are considerably smaller.
Yeah, if that's the lineup for Metallica's farewell, I will pass until Metallica go on.
System of a Down and Rage Against The Machine are 2 possibilities I can think of that could be solid if they're still around playing in 10-15 years.
They would definitely bring in more mainstream groups/artists kinda like the Black Album 30th anniversary thing they did a while back
Probably not quite as big. But yeah, probably something in the same vein.
sure they will have a show like this. Bands have been making tribute albums for yyears even when Metallica was more relevant.
Yes. Look how many artists from various genres recorded covers for the Black Album anniversary edition
Trivium will be there
They’re a bunch of showboaters so I imagine it’ll be bigger
I love this question! Yes and they deserve it
Yes and I’d imagine it’d be larger, actually.
Metallica is a massive business, a money making machine. Add to that how incredibly important they are to music history. So seems likely.
I'd imagine if that were to happen there would be very few contemporary bands that are big still left to even play at it. Like sure you can maybe get SOAD, Slipknot, Linkin Park, and RATM in 15 years, but not having any metal giants of the 80s there would be a bummer.
I just don't see bands like Slayer, Maiden, Anthrax, Megadeth (lol), and other big names of their time lasting.
Oof.
Hetfield is to Metallica as Ozzy is to Sabbath. They all deserve sendoffs, but fuck man apples and oranges!
They could of course but it’s a completely different thing with Sabbath which are the generators of the genre and that’s the reason why nearly every other band went to pay tribute. Metallica are the generator or co-generator of a sub genre and i don’t see the whole metal world coming for them.
James and Kirk maybe.
Yes but by high school marching bands
You would hope so, as much as it's cool to hate Metallica now, no Metallica, no metal as simple as that.
I hope other bands and or artist get a type of send off like this with Ozzy. I also thought it was cool that every band I believe did a Black Sabbath cover from what I’m thinking is homage but also still letting fans hear their favorites that aren’t apart of Black Sabbath’s last set list
Maybe in 10 years. James has taken better care of himself. we all knew how beat up ozzy was cause we saw him on mtv years ago.
If not for the Parkinsons, I bet Ozzy would still be out.
He's talked about doing studio stuff.
They should
If they ever actually retire lol
If Metallica ever does a farewell tour, I’d be interested in seeing what talents would show up.
Since they were inspired by Metallica, I could see Dream Theater appearing as guest players, for example.
And who wants to bet Dave Mustaine would try to show up?
Assuming Dave will still be in the game. He's getting old too.
I would think so, but hopefully it will be a while
Good question, and I honestly think they will. They are huge and so many bands exist because of Metallica
I fear there will be very few bands left to send them off.
I think they'll definitely have a sendoff of some sort. I don't think it will feel as impactful as this though. Sabbath/Ozzy are at the root of so many different musical trees. Their establishment of metal, and in turn every subgenre that has spun off, will never be matched by their contemporaries or later bands.
I was talking to my friend last Sunday about this and hopefully they will do it here in the Bay Area so that we will be able to watch it.
Yeah, of course they will. Will it be as big as ozzy’s?
By the time Metallica retires, I don't know how many bands younger than Metallica I'm going to care to see cover Metallica.
Like, the Ozzy thing, I tuned in because of Alice in Chains, Ghost, David Draiman, Slayer, Metallica and of course, the Sabbath and Ozzy lineups.
We kinda got to see what a tribute show like that would look like when they did the Blacklist of covers, and the only one that I still remember being awesome was St Vincent's Sad But True.
I guess my dream tribute show off the top of my head would be AiC providing the foundation for a three-hour show with folks like St Vincent, Wolfgang Van Halen, Tobias Forge dropping in to guest. Maybe with slots for Tye Trujillo to jump on bass for a couple songs and Castor Hetfield to sing/drum. Bring in DJ Lethal and Fred Durst to do Sanitarium LOL.
I sure as hell hope not anytime soon. I’ve only seen them 10 times and have many more left to go.
Yea there's no way the likes of Lars didn't look at this and go "would love to do that for us but bigger when the time comes"
I’ll be there no mater how many folks Lars pisses off 🍻
“Yeah!!”
For Sure
oh absolutely. metallica are so loved & have influenced SO many people, many will show up & show out for them
If not they damn well deserve it. So they may not rock out as well as they used to, fair enough, but there's no denying their influence of the early years.
Absolutely. Even if you don't l like metal or Metallica (I'm here from /all and don't consider myself a huge fan), you gotta respect their game. These guys defined the genre.
Yes of course they will one day.
I hope that many bands will do this when they reach a point. We should have huge live streamed celebrations. Lots of them!
They aught to. Just like the originals- Led Zep, KISS, Sabbath, Priest- they have gone places and done things never seen, or dreamed, before by a heavy band. they are true legends by any measure.
No cameos on Metallica albums ever.. I’d love to see a collaboration album, Metallica - lamb of god for example
Yes!! They will all be 100 btw
I always thought they were going to hunt each other for sport post-breakup.
They should do it with Judas priest
No they aren't Ozzy. They will milk a farewell tour like Ozzy did for sure.
Duh
They should have Power Trip play when it happens
No. I think they’ll do like Kiss and a final (final) tour.
Yes they get a great one, but they have at least 10 more years of touring
They never stop, they never quit,
Cause they're Metallica.
No.
Probably, it’ll be even bigger to be honest.
Yes. Some of the biggest most influential metal bands are finally retiring. I see more bands doing this.
I hope so, need to see them at least one more time in my lifetime.
Similar, but not the same. It's not even anything against Metallica at all, everyone loves Metallica, but Ozzy/Sabbath basically invented the genre.
Probably not. If they do, it wont have the same weight.
I think the black sabbath thing was special because the original band was all still alive. Unfortunately, cant happen for Metallica.
Also, I feel like Lars is fairly hated for a drummer of a metal band due to who he is (the general attitude and ego), and the lawsuit with napster, I dont see the same level of reverence.
God I hope not. I don't want to see James or anyone else up there struggling to do something they used to do easily because of a crippling illness, old age, Etc.
I thought about that earlier watching clips from the show. Crazy. They probably will.
100 %. They are the kings of metal!
I think every band on Earth is now going to start dropping “Final Show Ever” dates, and get that last fat paycheck in.
That said, I’m here for it.
No
Ask me in 25 years
If they want it
If they don’t do an s&m3, imma be pissed let’s just say that
I hope so because they absolutely deserve it. They definitely have way more haters than sabbath though
I dunno, Metallica fans aren't the healthiest bunch. No social safety net for them, most of them are not rich. Ozzy fans at least have social security to look forward to and Medicaid, whoops.
If they live that long and want to.
No cuz Metallica are immortal
Unless there is a way to re-animate Cliff, I don’t think Metallica can have a sendoff like BS did.
Metallica will likely cease to exist once Lars, James, or Kirk shakes off the mortal coil
No. None of them are married to Sharon Osborne
Metallica will be much bigger. So glad i finally got to see them live. And all together
Metallica is a great band, but Black Sabbath created a new musical genre
100% they could even manage doing an EU, US and hell why not MEX for LATAM mini tour just for this and they would sell out everything.
yes. it wont be like a KISS farewell who have retired and come back and retired 4 times
Hell yeah
They will get it if they want it.
I think the most successful Metal/Heavy Metal/Hard Rock band of all time have already more than earned a send off, as and when the time comes.
For now though, they're still active, putting on live shows of the highest quality, particularly for guys their age, likely have at least one more mainline studio album (not counting potential for a rumoured Garage Inc 2) - so let's not wish away the time we have left!
When you think about it, not only was the concert a farewell to Ozzy, the Godfather of Metal, but a tribute to metal as a whole.
No, they will go to the end. Without james, it would be some tribute shows if at all.
Absolutely, their 30th shows were like that in a way
And mtv did that mtv icon about metallica back in 2003, geez, 20 years ago?!? I watched the hell outta that in high school.
Bands like limp bizkit, korn, Avril, sum 41, snoop and Aaron lewis did their tribute thing. sum 41 killed it
Edit: here's limp bizkit doing sanitarium without Wes
Limp Bizkit KILLED it covering Sanitarium
Ya it was good that night. But I went to Summer Sanitarium tour in mid 90's. Bizkit was last band before Metallica. We were walking to the venue (Hawthorne Race Track in Chicago) and heard Bizkit start playing Sanitarium, they got booed relentlessly which apparently drove them offstage. Don't play Metallica songs when you're opening for fucking Metallica lol.
They opened on one of the nights of the current tour and their set was filled with constant Metallica riffs and tributes. Was a great warm up.
Summer Sanitarium started in 2000.
Yeah I was gonna say im pretty sure it was 03 with limp bizkit because that was the Mudvayne / Deftones / linkin park / like bizkit / Metallica lineup. Went to it in Montreal on the island.
Definitely 2003. Was there
This incident in particular happened in 2003 I believe.
Sum 41 has the best live version of Master of Puppets (other than Metallica themselves) that they did at one of their concerts. It's on YouTube if you wanna watch it.
Trivium's version is superior, but your point is valid
For the lazy: https://youtu.be/QR1jGidJ4RA?si=_pqAszl_CAJFyBMA
The guitar tone is actually sick and I applaud them 100%
I remember watching that and seeing Korn play One and I was so hyped for the solo and then they stopped right before it lol
Cause there was no one in Korn that could do it 🤣
Sum 41 do killer Metallica covers https://youtu.be/jxeyYdQtHrI?si=p8v4toUp3BdNZ-2U
Duuude that limp bizkit cover is fucking nuuuts!! Thank you for that 🤘🤘🤘
