That's a total and complete lie.
It is a joke, and it isn't even about metallica. The origin of this joke it was with Jhon Lennon saying this about Ringo Star. And that is also false, there is no evidence of that.

Completely irrelevant, but it's absolutely wild to me how often I see the name "John" misspelled as "Jhon".
The first time I saw it I thought it was just some fat fingering, but it's super, super common.
I am fairly positive that I've heard an interview where he said it ... and yes, it's a callback to John on Ringo.

It was a joke about Lenon answering something like "Is Ringo the best drummer in the world?". Then a lot of people have used that in different context, including Metallica jokes.
And Lenon saying that about Ringo is also a lie.

James played the drums in Spastik Children. Kirk played bass after Cliff died. Jim "Faith No More" Martin on guitar and Fred Rotten Cotton on vocals. Funny band. James is a pretty good drummer. 🥁 (probably makes Lars jealous 😁)
