Played since Alpha, how do I avoid burnout?

Played since Alpha, how do I avoid burnout?
Played since Alpha, how do I avoid burnout?

When I start a new world, my goal is to always go bigger and better than the previous world. Meaning better builds, more farms and just a longer investment in the world. However when I get to a certain point like finishing the iron farm I burn out or lose motivation to build or grind. I love this game so much and I would like to have a world I play on for years. The best I’ll do is a few weeks and it drives me nuts. Here is a showcase of my last world, I wanted a ranch style build.

Maybe build the next iron farm totally different? Maybe don't start with the iron farm immediately and do something else?

I get what you’re saying but I need an iron farm it’s like top priority. w/o it I’m constantly running out or going on mining trips. I’m more of a builder/terraformer than miner.

Edit: why tf yall downvoting me??

You get downvoted cuz you make your own problems.

You are good at the game, so you try to "beat" is as fast and efficiently possible, but then wonder why you get a burnout

RusherJ1

I think op means this since this is how I feel: I enjoy the creation aspect of Minecraft a lot more than continuously mining for the materials you need to build said creations. An iron farm is not something you build to beat the game fast and efficiently. But it’s essential if you’re building anything even slightly large.

TarasKhu

thats why I used "", it's not beating, but how will you call it if I say that I'm getting bored and idk what to do when I do a mob farm, iron farm, get enchantmented dimond gear and basically every farm possible so you dont need to play the game instead of some actual roaming and chill exploration. that's what Im talking about.

It’s crazy people think an iron farm is why you’re getting burnout. Literally nothing to with it lol, I know exactly what boat you’re in. What helped me was playing stuff like survival island, skyblock, single block survival, etc. Helps with the creativity if you’re just interested in the building aspect of the game, and has a sense of progression still.

Yeah, I get how people could get to that conclusion, but it doesn’t seem to be the case imo

Have you tried playing with a friend who likes doing these tasks that you don't?

r_Bogard OP

Ive had dedicated servers w my brother and friends. After a few hours keep inventory is turned on, people spawning stuff in. Im a vanilla SMP enthusast, when this starts to happen I'm out. Honestly, my playstyle is very different to most of the people I usually play with.

appape

Does it make sense to start your own server that they can join? Keep the controls so they can’t mess things up to bad. Maybe if you build stuff there, they will want to contribute. If they end up staying a while they will need more things built- providing inspiration for you.

My brother has a server set up for his kids. He and I are having tons of fun building and maintaining nether corridors for rail travel between sites of interest. We’ve raided a water monument, a vault, pillager outposts, and are building up to go after a woodland mansion. It’s a blast.

Nothing keeps your interest better than building/maintaining something that someone else will use.

The same thing happens to me, I make the iron farm and I lose all motivation, I don't know what to do apart from some mob farm, in my worlds I always want to make a construction but I'm really bad at it.

My advice, make a super flat creative world to brainstorm what youre going to build next. When they are complete you go back to your survival world and its much easier.

I think they downvote you because you have a playstyle that wants to skip part of the game? Like stone tools and early game building (starter base and all)

No, its because they were given good advice and then went directly against it. The biggest cause of burnout in this game is doing the same thing each time you start a new world

Hardcore miner here. Why do you need an iron farm so bad and this early in the game? I feel like mining for it yourself is more fun. You literally see iron everywhere in caves. Automating the process is so dull of you.

They’re killing the game for themselves and don’t even realize it. Literally automating and optimizing the fun out of the game

:derp_golem:

You can still see fun in that if you're smart about it. Figuring out how farms (and redstone in general) work and even creating your own designs with that knowledge, is still fun.

But what's not fun is following a tutorial for a simple iron farm, block for block, over and over again, so much so that you remember where everything goes and how it works, and expecting not to get bored.

Do something new with that knowledge.

I actually understand this, but from the opposite perspective. I hate building, but love exploring, gathering, finding and doing thing. I don't do any mob farms other than actual farm animals. The work is part of the fun for me. My friends do huge builds. But most of my builds are more nomadic. I'll have a house or multiple smaller/tiny home style houses littered among biomes. That's why i prefer playing with friends. All of our playstyles compliment each other.

Maybe try out some mods if you haven't already or play on a server with other people. Collaborate on some builds. Build things for other people.

Yo 200 downvotes is diabolical, let the man breath

One idea, try going nomad. This game has made exploring actually fun, and as you keep moving it brings some new challenges as what should I keep, how can I carry what I need, does this serve a purpose... gliding further from my usual experience. I enjoyed it because it made it clear that having more things in chests isn't necessarily the goal, as much as I loved sorting items hehe

In that case, why do you keep creating new worlds? I’ve only been playing a few years and I’ve spent almost all of my time on a single world I started in version 1.17. When you have a world you’ve invested a lot of time in gathering resources you have the freedom to create whatever you want. You can create multiple bases with different themes or just expand your base in different creative directions.

I would advise to not consider iron farm as the first stone of your world. You can first build a 100% wood starter base for your first needs, and add a “tree farming area”, then you could mine stone and expand your base, add buildings… after that, you can finally go to iron, with a solid base of resources, and build your iron farm. You have to take each step and go slow to really enjoy the game and avoid burning out.

To avoid burnout I take long breaks from the game. I write down any ideas I have during my hiatus then when a new update comes along I jump in and play for several weeks to complete a few builds then take another long break. I have a personal forever world I been building on for over a decade now because of this.

yeah this is the reason why op is dumb imo not the iron farm stupidity. Stop quitting the world when u get bored of it, just go play a different game, download the world file and make it an smp so you can play on it with bros, or find a new area and challenge yourself with new building styles and redstone contraptions that you haven't built before.

Treat the iron farm like a jumping board? You can have unlimited tools for collecting/building after that's done.

Pick a different block palette and build a city with it. Pick a different block palette when you complete one city or town block. Fill the interiors with other useful farms and make the exterior look good.

Are you burning out in the world, or not wanting to play Minecraft at all after a few weeks?

If it's the world, have multiple projects you can go between (different farms, maybe an outpost, drain a monument, etc). I build large things and it's always nice to be able to take a break when I feel like I'm just spinning my wheels creatively. Moving to a different build, or doing something besides building helps (mining, collecting blocks for a museum, trying out new features, raiding a trial chamber, fighting a raid).

I have several builds in various states is completeness in my long term world (almost 5 years old now). If I need a break, I go to one of them for awhile, or I do some raids or go wither mining to get ancient debris, or build a new farm or something.

While building my colosseum, I took a break to figure out how to make an item categorizer for upgrading my storage system. That took ages to learn the redstone, pick through different designs and try things out in creative before finally building it in survival (and even then, I changed my mind and went another direction after I had the while thing almost done.

If you're getting tired of Minecraft altogether, take a break and do something else for a while. Your world will be there, waiting, when you're ready to pick it up again.

Lzinger

You need the proper balance between building and grinding.

If you build too many farms to remove the grind, you won't have anything to do to distract you from building when you get bored.

It's a balance you have to find yourself as it's different for each person.

Lombax_Pieboy

You may want to consider setting longer term bigger goals for yourself like a Megabase. It can be a daunting challenge to undertake, but it's a great way to give you something to pick away at and keep you returning to the world over and over to continue progress. I have the first episode of a tutorialto help give you a foundation if you need some extra help working up the courage to start one (just the first 10 to 15 min). Your stable is a fantastic first build though, keep at it and hopefully one of your worlds sticks!

r_Bogard OP

Few things to reduce burnout, and it's not to limit yourself or not do an iron farm. I am a builder too and I get it. The downvotes are excessive.

Have about 5 or more projects at varying sizes going on at once. It helps to cycle through them depending on your mood/inspiration. No rush. Rome wasn't built in a day.

Gathering is tiring, but watch a show or something while you mine if you're not in the mood to build and of course, take breaks from the game. A well placed block is more beautiful than 1000 terribly placed blocks.

Lastly, avoid new playthroughs. Stick to one. If you really want to start fresh then drop everything in your current playthrough and move. You may find you'll want to return to a more mid game/end game type game.

ToadSwampy

I played my previous world for over a decade before switching to my current, 3+ year old, world. The best advice I can give is this: there is nothing wrong with starting over on the same world.

Tired of your current builds? Place everything in storage, pick a direction, and wonder around until you find a new place to build — treat the new location like a fresh world. Your existing farms and items will be there if/when you decide to use them again.

My world is littered with half finished projects that I got bored with. Maybe I'll finish them in a year or two, maybe I won't. At the end of the day, I'm still having fun.

r_Bogard OP

This is good stuff

Expensive_Pain

I do this too. It's great because I revisit & rediscover my old projects and connect them up with my newest transportation method etc.

I write a sign that says "Built in June 2023" and hide it somewhere at the base of each building.

TBH the fact you can start a new world is a massive attractive nuisance - too many people do it without thinking if they should.

Sometimes, the time is only cure to the burnout on certain interest. If you feel your burnout is impossible to cure with any remedies like challenging with self limitations or making new and bigger goals, Just taking a rest from playing vanilla minecraft could be the only cure.

Regular breaks are the key to sticking with any game long term. If you feel burned out, take some time off. Before you know it the itch will be back, and you’ll have a bunch of fresh ideas and the necessary rest to tackle them.

xxmadshark33xx

The two biggest things that have helped me have been taking breaks from Minecraft and limiting automation. Having to mine for iron or go hunting for creepers keeps you busy and allows you to explore areas you may never have gone before. Another thing to keep you on the same world is leaving most of your materials behind and building a base far away. After building in the same area for a few years I packed up and moved, not only did the new generation give me new ideas for building it also gave me new places to explore.

M477M4NN

Instead of starting a new world, you could drop everything from your inventory, travel to a new part of the same world, and essentially start over from scratch as if it’s a new world. Then later as you progress again, you can connect your builds together via paths and such.

NefariousEgg

I think you have things the wrong way around. If you want to do something, you should enjoy the process, not necessarily the end result. The satisfaction you get from accomplishing a task is much less than you think it will be.

So just do what you enjoy doing. If it's a silly build it's a silly build. If it's making a farming landscape, it's that. Or if it's another video game, or another hobby entirely, do that.

Everyone needs a break from something eventually, I take multi year breaks from Minecraft. I recently just started playing again and love it. I however enjoy many aspects of Minecraft, from exploration, cartography, helping new players on anarchy servers, and fishing are my main things. I'm not too creative so most things I build are just functional and not very fancy.

I feel there's always something you can improve on. Anytime I join servers I always offer to be a map maker for players or make entire rooms filled with maps of the area and surrounding chunks. Entire walls that are maps I find so neat.

I've been playing for 15 years. I used to chronically start new worlds. I would login to my world and be overwhelmed with what to do in it, or I would dislike how my builds looked, everything was a mess.

Eventually, I learned to just take breaks when I felt like that and come back when I'm in a better headspace. Sometimes, all I do for a week is take something old i make that I thought was ugly and improve it. Things like making a road more detailed, or just running around filling in creeper holes. Other days I feel ambition to start a new project. I'll have many ongoing projects at the same time, so if I get bored or overwhelmed by one, I can go work on something else.

Another crucial thing I learned is to not worry about how long something will take. Currently I'm working on a bee farm (not too big), but I've been building the exterior house for over a month. It's not a grand, large project, but I spend so much time detailing it, redoing parts that I'm not happy with, and only work on it a few hours a week at best. I don't mind that it's taking forever. It makes me happy because I am making something i can be proud of. Building something quick because you want to get it done fast will not mean much to you. Sometimes I login and just make a dirt frame for a new building. Then I get bored and logout, maybe I don't play for a few days, but eventually the spark comes back, i login, see my dirt frame and maybe I have the energy to pick out a block pallet. Or I don't feel like that and I just do some mindless branch mining.

Take your time with playing and building to grow your attachment to your world. Don't play just for dopamine hits, in my experience, that leads to feeling overwhelmed and burnout. I hope this helps. I didn't mean to type so much, but as you can tell, I am passionate about this game and I love to see other passionate players!

Fellow Alpha player here 👋 heres my secret: stop trying to optimize the game, and just play it.

I know the feeling all to well, make a new world, get your basic farms goin and stacked tools/armor then the burnout hits.

I find when the game is too easy the burnout hits fast, yeah having infinite iron at the start of a world is cool, but whens the last time you went on a good ol fashioned mining trip? Its the same reason creative mode doesnt keep you engaged. If its too easy theres no challenge, if theres no challenge theres no dopamine, if theres no dopamine theres no point.

Pick big goals, its a forever world, theres non rush to finish anything so make your projects big.

If youre already burned out. Play on an smp or rp server for a bit, try a mod pack, get a taste of something different, that itch to go back will eventually come.

The way I avoid burnout is by just doing whatever I feel like. I avoided building an iron farm until day 850 in my current world. If I'm in the middle of a build and I suddenly feel like End raiding, I go End raiding even if I don't need shulker boxes.

As a casual player, there is no need to play the game in the optimal way. There's a lot of pressure around playing Minecraft efficiently and high performance, while honestly that pressure only applies to professional YouTubers. The optimal way for us lowly casuals is whatever you find the most fun.

I've only just built an iron farm on day 763. I'm doing a run to get all combos of iron armor trims plus the different colors. I've 5 of the 17 (or 18??) done but got waylaid by a 'stupid' idea of mining the area a full haste II beacon covers. The really stupid bit was starting in windswept hills, so about 30 blocks above sea level . . . Anyhow, I built the iron farm for the insane amount of hoppers needed just to store stone and cobbled deepslate. To break things up I'll go 5-10k block away from my base to mine for diamonds as I'll need <checks notes> 5236 to complete all the trims. I've added a few farms along the way. Any farms that grows plants or involve animals (auto wool farm) are now around the top of the hole I'm digging (all by hand, no TNT) and others have a basic chunk loader with them (ender pearl + 7 deep bubble column).

Digging the deepslate is a real grind even if I am looking forward to what I can build there. The odd time I'll travel to a desert or large beach and load up on sand to turn into glass. Just a change of scenery and to break up the monotony, I guess the key point it, have multiple things on the go to keep things interesting.

Oh, I also only use iron armor this run. It's made for plenty of hairy moments. Pro IV diamond/netherite armor removes the danger element even on hard mode.

Cool-Delivery-3773

Honestly? Completely avoid the most efficient playstyles. Don't build any iron farms, don't exploit any unintentional game mechanics, and never use the F3 menu. I'd even say avoid using Elytra.

It sounds boring, but the game feels much more rewarding when you really earn everything through the standard mechanics of mining, crafting, and combat. When you solve the entire game from the start and give yourself infinite resources, it becomes a lot less fun and interesting. That seems to be the catalyst for the 2-week phase phenomenon - people rush to get the most efficient setup and it gets boring fast.

In other words, go with what's the most fun, not the most efficient. Minecraft is a game that's supposed to be fun, it's not a job. And remember that this is a sandbox game about setting your own goals, with no real end point (hence why beating the "final boss" just unlocks a bit more content and doesn't end the game). Take your time, don't rush to the Ender Dragon just because.

My advice is to take things slow. Dont ever give into the temptation of starting a new world. After a few years, building your world up becomes something very special.

Its okay to take a break, but come back into the same world with ideas. There is no advantage at all to just restarting, move to a new area and start there.

Don’t start new worlds. Everyone harping about “forever worlds” is right. If you enjoy the early game grind so much just relocate every time you feel the urge to start again

Once you have a world that you are truly attached to and want to see keep growing it’s a lot easier to find motivation and inspiration for big / goofy projects

If you’re asking the question, “what’s the point of doing/building this?” before you do something in Minecraft then you’ll eventually get bored of that world. You’ve got to learn to build things purely for fun and to have them as additions to your ever-growing world. Try and let go of the min-max mindset and just build whatever you want, even if it’s a pointless build with no function or purpose

Trust me and try this. Ive been playing on the same world for 3 years. When I get burnt out on a project or area I dump all my tools into a chest and kms. From world spawn I just tp or walk towards new chunks and pretend that is my new "world" and start over.

That process doesnt itself save me from burnout. I start new farms, get max gear again, and start the process over like new but end up in the same ditch. What does save me from burnout though is zooming out and seeing that now I have 2 developed areas in the same world distinct from one another. And the more I do that, the more my world grows until eventually I have the world im on now. That continuity breeds new project ideas and ambitions. Now I started a project to connect my world through giant railways. Im talking thousands of blocks long. Its tedious but its paying off and it gives me the chance to constantly interact with my world even when I dont have a grand idea of what's "next"

Try it out sometime

I’ve been playing on my same world for almost a decade. I avoid burnout by taking up huge projects, and taking needed breaks.

Currently I am working on pixel art, resource gathering and building a platform to put it on.

Other than that I dunno, having a giant sorting system an iron farm, gold farm, and creeper/ sugar cane farm doesn’t stifle me it just means I can focus on things other than that.

I feel like the iron farm has some symbolic meaning here

I understand wanting one and how good they are

But it trivializes something that otherwise would require adventure to obtain.

Efficiency is something my boss laments about

Edit: have you tried terraria?

Try modded minecraft?

Mods! Try some mods. Something that adds challenge, makes the mining more fun, more building blocks, mobs, events... Even a whole new playstyle!

my personal favorite is to have a book and quill with everything you wanna do, and adding sentimental meaning to things (like having a pet).

try having new adventures: gear up and try doing a raid (very cool with mace + wind burst!!), loot an ancient city or try collecting dumb stuff like every armor trim or every music disc.

if you dont like that, try making some bigger projects. Start planning on a creative copy of your world. Get inspiration, I love henri pacca for small builds, and shovel241 for massive ones (or the good old hermit craft).

if thats still not enough, im on a quest to doing every advancment, and collecting every item in the game. youll have so many different experiences you never thought of. Have them in a museum idk.

I hope I helped :)

Get some lore in there. Every time I die in the game I make it like I have a new character with new motivations to follow. It's made me zig and zag through a single world for going on 5 years. I still haven't even made it to the End dimension because it feels like there's too much to do.

Stop playing when you want to stop playing, then when you want to play go back to the same world. I’m nearly at 2k days now and I dealt with the same problem.

If you’ve seriously been playing since alpha, it’s okay for you to take a break

As someone who has a long term world where I do very big projects that’s easy to get burnt out from (I drained a ocean) I find a couple things r important.

  1. Take breaks and play a different game, I play Minecraft and rainbow six and that’s basically it, but it helps me feel not as burnt out with Minecraft having something else to do.

  2. Take breaks from your project, nothing says your iron farm or this and that have to be finished before u start something else, when I got bored with draining my ocean I went and spent a month plus just doing projects in the nether and then went back with a fresh mindset on the other projects.

  3. Share your stuff, I would stream, I would show my friends, just recently posted on here, and I find having other people see and give input is great motivation

Play a different game, wait a year and come back when there's more content.

Actually, I suggest that you do your thing like iron farms, etc but you need to set the goals larger. Your next world should be a city ... install a texture pack for city scales or midieval and then the goal is to build an entire downtown or a feudal city in survival. Then, fill it with villagers, each having their own house. Working subway, working water elevators in the buildings, etc. As you progress, make the inside of the buildings different themes so it forces you to gather the unique materials from different biomes ... jungle, ocean monuments, woodland mansions, etc. This way its both survival and a multi-year journey for your creativity.
Make it a realm and along rhe way you could develop friendships where they take over one of the buildings and make it their own, etc.

Accept it. You can't be doing the same thing for years without enjoying it less. Minecraft used to be a personality trait of mine but i only play it when there is an interesting update nowadays.

I have multiple projects to work on if I get tired of working on one thing. Redstone is also kind of fun to figure out and you feel pretty good after solving some little redstone problems in your world. Randomly exploring let's you get your mind off of things as well, but most importantly, taking some breaks from minecraft as well

Take a 2-week break from all video games.

Start multiple projects at once and especially some projects that require very little thinking. like building a really large wheat field or mining sand to drain and ocean monument. That way when your tired of working on something that requires a lot of planning and thinking you can just fall back on one of your other projects that are a bit easier

Just enjoy the process and don't be like I have to finish this and build that in a certain amount of time. Just relax and go with the flow. Play some music in the background if required.

If you get burned out then just play something else until the motivation hits you hard again.

i'd say to just play less. if you are playing since alpha that's 15-16 years of minecraft

if the game had more updates/added more stuff to keep the experience new, playing less and coming back every 2 major updates would feel better. I for example only play when the "2 week phase" hits and I stop playing because I can't think about anything useful and cool looking that I want to build

play other stuff, it's the same thing I do with other games

Same boat mate.
I've realized when i run out of goals, or the goals get too big i tend to get burnout (which for me means starting over).

You have to find your own answers on this one, but could this be a clue?

switjive18

You... don't. You can't avoid something inevitable. If you see people playing for years it's because of dedication and discipline. People burnout all the time. That's why we have a term "2-week Minecraft Phase".

Ok-Still3658

Try hardcore, if you been playing for so long shouldnt be a problem to survive for a decent amount of time, just dont take risks and dont cheat after death. It gives the world more "meaning" knowing that you did it all with one life and that it could all be gone.

Set yourself different goals. Build a giant museum and fill it with one of every block and item you can get. Build a zoo with one of every mob you can contain. Try to collect one of every possible fish (do not do that one, it isn't worth it). Try designing megastructures to build that require atypical materials so you build different kinds of farms. Try building factories that autocraft particular items instead of stopping with farms.

Alternatively, get into speedrunning.

Accept that you will get a 2 week minecraft phase then burn out then after a while get a new one

Id say don’t build the iron farm at all, unless you need like thousands of iron. On my world, I decided not to build the iron farm so I’d be forced to go and explore caves and stuff

I started playing hardcore modpacks like gtnh or Enigmatica 2 expert(not as hc)
as in those you are forced to play like 300 hours.
it needs some dedication though

Play bedrock. The limitations will force you to put 10x more effort in everything (even an iron farm)and you won't quit.
