The one thing I want added to the game the most

No more confusing your silk pick with fortune pick, and overall it would improve the look GREATLY. I mean just imagine a netherite sword with redstone, gold or diamond trims

Wooden hoe with gold trim also looks pretty hot lol, would be pretty useless but I'd put it in an item frame near my farmer's house

It would be pretty useless. . . Except to datapacka that can change their values so you can make them unique gear.

It would be pretty useless. . .

Okay? Armor trims themselves are also kinda useless, since they only have the cosmetics aspect. This is literally just armor trims for tools.

bliptease

It's very cool, now I also want to have such items. Although they might be useless, visual delight should also be there, as far as I'm concerned.

mekmookbro OP
:creeper:

I meant it would be as useless as a regular wooden hoe, since it's just cosmetics and doesn't affect mining speed and durability.

For example main thing I use my hoe for is to break leaves with fortune and wooden hoe doesn't instamine leaves. I think that's what that comment meant as well

Tool trims would be sick! They already have armour trims, so why not these??

-PepeArown-

My guess is that tool textures are so small that Mojang may have trouble coming up with good, unique trims

Armor has 18 trims currently. I think Mojang can get away with only adding like 4 tool trims just because the pixel space is way less to work with, and they have to deal with 5 tools, and perhaps bows, crossbows, tridents, and maces as well, not just 4 pieces of armor

FourGander88

I think tool variants could be a cool approach, functionally the same with a different outward appearance. Something like scimitars or katanas for swords, double edged or viking-style blades for axes, etc.

aqua_zesty_man

They don't have to make it like armor trims with different styles.

It would be enough to have one trim per ore plus another one each for leather, resin, and amethyst, and a few other odd ones for colors that don't have a corresponding color ore like nether bone or quartz (white), granite (pink), etc.

BushTamer

Agree with this. At max like 3 styles, but I’d rather more color options over different styles

mekmookbro OP
:creeper:

The mod/data pack in the picture also only has 4 different trims, I just installed it today and it's awesome.

Though some tools take a little long to switch, idk if that's the mod doing it or its from the game. Iirc switching to axe animation was always slow but now it's just as slow with shovel and picks too, hoe is almost instant though, weird

RevolutionaryCrab7

What if instead of trims we can change the tool shape entirely a bit? Might be interesting.

JaggedGull83898

Maybe they could add trims that retexture the tool entirely

jelly_bean_gangbang

That makes sense. What about just weapon trims then, not even all tools/weapons.

:villager:

responding to op's silk/fortune pickaxe problem, what i do is keep my fortune pick diamond and make my silk netherite. the durability difference is neglible once you factor in unbreaking and mending, and im usually using fortune on valuable ores, which drops xp that repairs my pickaxe while im using it, usually negating the durability drop.

:creeper:

You don't even need a ton of different trims, there are already a ton of trimming item options. Like copper, iron, diamond, netherite, redstone, lapis, quartz, amethyst.. this mod only has 4 trims and it's more than enough to make a tool look awesome and unique

The tool-identifying use would definitely be nice. I do give unique names to all my gear but of course that requires hovering over each item in the inventory to actually see. It is also possible to distinguish multiples of basic tools and weapons by simply making them out of different materials but that has its own limitations:

  1. Only netherite is lava-proof, so if you're playing with Keep Inventory turned off leaving tools at diamond-tier can be a liability. I often leave my Fortune pickaxe as diamond because it works just as well that way but it is still vulnerable.
  2. Most of the other basic tools/sword really could use the durability/performance boost from the netherite upgrade, so leaving them at a lower tier just to make them visually distinct isn't a great tradeoff.
  3. Many tools and weapons cannot be made with different materials but are nice to have multiple of for different enchantments (trident, crossbow, mace).

Trims would avoid all of these problems.

Azuria_4

For the people saying "they'd need to come up with 18 different trims per tool"

Hear me out, they make a 19th trim, that is cheaper to duplicate, and now they only have to design 1

Or, as the mod op is showing, all the trims do the same pattern

decitronal
:skeleton:

The mod that the trims from the image comes from alleviate the issue by just having a separate, smaller set of trims exclusive to tools. Cuts down workload significantly while stil allowing a decent level of customization

Destian_

The only problem I see with this is the recent data driven texture alternatives they've added.

If you don't know what I am talking about, resource packs can for example provide alternate item textures based on an items durability or different looks for all enchantments.

Adding a trim system to items would mean any and all of these data driven alternatives also have to provide their own version of a trim texture, so your curved Sharpness sword doesn't have a straight line of gold ruining the overall appearance of the item.

And yeah, trimmed netherite gear would look insanely cool — redstone or gold trim on a sword?

Trims are intended to be cosmetic and cosmetic only, to prevent everyone from having the same look to their armor

By offering incentives to using different trim material, you’re just bottlenecking the amount of trims players will want to use, because some will be more useless than others

SparklezSagaOfficial
:elder_guardian:

Idk that there’s enough real estate on the tools to make unique trims, and also worry about obscuring the actual material of the tool, something that isn’t a concern with armor due to its huge surface area. Maybe if it only trimmed the handle portions with a single “stud” on the metal?

-PepeArown-

You could always just look at the tooltip, though

If you’re this far in your world that you can get hypothetical tool trims, you probably know that you’re using diamond or Netherite

-PepeArown-

Technically speaking, you could just rename your tools to differentiate enchantments

But, I also agree that tool trims should be added. I actually have a very specific idea for how they could add them into a drop focused on updating the classic dungeons, giving them a few new variants, but still not making them too huge like ancient cities or trial chambers

donqon

Damn those look awesome

k0nehead

Tbh this would be sick if the type of ore you used for the trip would help in different ways like gold could make your tool more efficient but weakens it iron can just add abit more durability diamond can make it stronger and more durability netherite can just give it a ton more durability and immune to lava that kinda stuff would be sick

RedditSpyFooX

while I really like the idea, wouldn't it be horrible for texture/ressource pack makers ?

maybe it would require some procedural techniques to make sure it's not far too long, idk ?

mekmookbro OP
:creeper:

Idk how a hypothetical implementation would work in base game, but this data pack only adds 4 different trims, and each material just changes the trim color.

So they would only need to design 4 new variants per tool and maybe play around with trim material's color values to make it fit better with the rest of the resource pack, if necessary. Which I don't think would be too much work for resource pack makers, these would be pretty fun to work on, at least definitely more fun than designing new trapdoors and fence gates for each wood type I'd say lol
