that first picture is from anime filler
Yeah I see this picture in particular used as a comparison a lot and it's not even Canon.
I was about to say lol
First design isn’t even official
It's literally in the first panel of the whole manga lmao
No it’s not lmao what are you talking about?
In case you haven’t read the story btw
That’s a different picture. He’s not at a bar in this one. Do we need to learn how to play spot the difference?
Pick up the book dawg the first thing shown in chapter 1 is Roger Getting Executed 😭
And even then, they dont look all that different.
His mustache is probably the biggest difference besides him being thinner, but every character got thicker as Oda evolved his style.
Exept nami lmaaaooo
I was talking men, my bad.
But even women had this happen, in a sense. Women got bigger titties while men got broader chests.
Young Roger is built like a poneglyph
What do his abs say?
Even worst
Nope that’s the image from Loguetown. When the Barman sees Roger in Luffy
Isn't the first pic when he's way closer to death and sick?
it's the opposite, it's before he even went to the grandline right? He tells the bar owner he's going to the grandline in the flashback that the bar owner has.
and isn't that entire scene non canon
Yeah it’s anime only
And yet it is excelent
Honestly I’m not sure because I am doing a One Pace rewatch and I swear that scene was in Loguetown - they would have cut it if it weren’t canon.
nah they leave in filler stuff that's quality. think they leave in G8 marine arc as well.
G-8 is in an extended cut, loguetown doesn’t have one of those iirc
NukemDukeForNever's point remains that G-8 is filler, and that one pace features it.
But they have a completely different version you have to purposely click on to get that cut. It didn’t even exist the first time I used Pace.
Since you have decided to push this conversation further with me, I will answer your confusion directly.
Raoul and Daddy Masterson are NOT canon. They don't appear in the manga, they are filler.
One Pace does not set the standard for what is or is not canon, they are just known for cutting filler out.
It's before his journey to conquer the grandline. So after things like God Valley but before he met oden etc.
It is unfortunately an anime only scene.
I mean the first actual image of Roger that is canon is the first issue of his execution the image used here is an anime exclusive scene, which in theory was done by the animation team working with little information of what Roger's deal was during this time.
Art style progression, but also: Filthy Pirate Roger> Technicolor Dreamboat Roger
Acting like he wasn’t dressed colorful before
They didn’t change Roger. One is how the world saw him and one is how his friends and crew saw him.
Except the one pic in the post is from a flashback of a friend and it was filler if I remember correctly
Flashback Roger was on death's door physically though and while it doesn't seem like it, he still used a variety of colors, even if they aren't as vibrant due to the older artstyle.
How tho? It’s from before he went to the grand line
Yeah you’re right, but this depiction is used for cannon Roger scenes as well.
Exactly. It’s similar to how when you “see” Luffy in Gear 5 from the POV of someone like Lucci, he has red eyes. It’s how the outside world that doesn’t actually know him sees him based on what the government has said.
Much like OP's comparison, red eyes demon luffy is also not canon and is something the anime made up.
Exactly
is that canon or just your opinion ?
I guess technically it’s not something that is specifically mentioned. But this is how Roger is depicted even in canon scenes. He’s this grumpy mean looking pirate.
But everyone who knew him always said that Luffy is similar to him.
The world government made him out to be an evil pirate and that’s the only frame of reference we had of him for the longest time. Hence the first pic.
The second pic is the first scene of actually seeing Roger.
We can see the same thing happening with Luffy right now but reverse. We know Luffy is a fun loving character but the world government depicts him as a monster.
The anime is also suggesting that people see him as a monster in g5.
Whatever helps you cope
Cope with what
That's pretty much your headcanon.
It's literally just a different art style. Some of you OP fans would come up with everything...
It's just a natural art style change over decades, my guy, don't try to make it that deep.
Luffy has had dozens of different looks too, you don't have to pull an explanation outta nowhere for each one.
Another day, another person using the anime when talking about character designs...
Not only the anime, but filler.
the first pic is't canon
I swear we get a new post about this exact same topic every other day now
First pic = The scary evil pirate the WG wants you to fear.
Second pic = The actual chill Roger from the PoV of people that knew him well.
(I know the actual reason is because of art style changes, but I prefer this headcanon).
I bet he has both sides. The first could also be misleading on purpose - he was sick and when you don't know this, then he looks evil.
He’s not sick in the first pic, it’s from before he went to the grandline. (And from filler )
After we just learned that he had a torturer on his crew, its starting to be believable that there would be stories of him being terrifying
I am not convinced. WG has a huge propaganda to demonize him. Even if he has a torturer - it doesn't mean a thing - he also had Oden and little kids. The torturer could come from Impeldown - this would be cool! But when you remember, Kuma was had also a terrific name - which wasn't real.
Second one is the real Roger
That’s just different lighting
terminal illness tends to do that
I like the colorful roger way better
First pick - Dark Ominous Pirate, dangerous.
Second Pick - Sassy Queen, fashionista. The Real Roger.
I mean look at Ace.
I miss the old designs. But Roger’s change made sense. He was reaching the end of his terminal illness.
He wasn’t sick in the first pic
That old art style was so fire
It was kinda cool that Roger was a capital P pirate, the person that effectively started the pirate trend. Not a fan of how he is portrayed today as more flamboyant, do we really need him to be a copy-paste of Luffy? Are we really going the Naruto route of the story being cyclical?
Roger a copy-paste of Luffy? The guy is literally Ace with a moustache and Luffy's carefree personality.
Not physically, just his personality. You can easily see Luffy being exactly like him personality-wise 20 years from now or so. He looks more like he's Luffy's father than Ace's going by his behavior.
Read more carefully next time. I said "Roger is Ace with a moustache and Luffy's carefree personality".
I never said that Roger physically resembles Luffy.
Yeah, me neither, which is why your comment "Roger a copy-paste of Luffy?" which is then followed by a physical comparison between him and Ace came across as thinking I compared them physically.
I love the progression because it literally shows the viewpoint change for Rodger. From just being this folktale legend to actually seeing him through the lens of he was a real person. He’s not just a myth that was pure evil as the WG wants the public to believe and shows how he’s remembered by those closest to him.
It would be no different than if we somehow could legitimately look into the past at people like Alexander the Great, Gengis Khan, Caesar, Cleopata, etc. We only know the “folklore” side of things and what can be confirmed by historical evidence, I’d be willing to bet them in reality would be much different then what we know and assume they were like.
i miss the old art
All characters designs looked better pre timeskip
Pre-time skip Roger and post-time skip Roger. Honestly, pretty tame given our other examples.
Ya a disease will do that to you, I can go from normal to looking half dead and losing 20-40 pounds in the hospital with my Crohns Disease and this guy had an unknown disease…
I always expected roger to be ruthless aggressive , cunning . All traits of being PIRATE king , instead we got a reckless , funny , charmfull , and sort of idiot as a pirate king , never the less he is fun to watch , i guess xebec might be the one that acts like actual pirate .
Filler
I still miss all the OG looks
Changed rizz
Rodger in the post time skip flashbacks are when he decided to get on a body hair grooming regimen.
Oda gave us post time-skip Rodger without realizing he didn't have one.
Not knowing abt conq haki or anything like that seeing this back in day i was like “fuck so special abt him” 🤣 still looked fire asf
The way I see it, on the left is "Gold Roger" and on the right is "Gol D. Roger".
Gol D. Roger
Sorry. Autocorrect fuckin' me up...
lol I figured as much. Just figured if I didn’t say it someone else would 😅
Lol you mean roger at the start of his entire journey vs his final couple of years after he became the strongest in the world
How the world saw him vs how his friends saw him.
You can think about it like this: In the first picture roger was sick and one month away from dying, the other one is him in his peak.
He wasn’t sick. It’s from before he went to the grand line
Guys don't forget they are pirates...
Wait till u see his son
Thats the grand line for you
Difference between everyday pirates in grand line and the truly elite and obviously the Pirate King himself.
You have way more resources as an emperor and beyond so it makes sense.
I sort of see it as expectation vs reality painted by the stories of others, to the random Joe in one piece luffy probably seems like a demon, a monster pirate cold blooded scary, but we know how he actually is a goofy guy. Same thing happened with Roger, Oden, and even Dr. Vegapunk, I wouldn’t be surprised if Rocks D Xebec was just a goofy mf too.
first design is so much cooler
And non-canon.
He had an incurable disease. I know it's filler but it makes sense.
Pre time skip Roger was dope now he’s just a copy paste of luffy
How
Pre-time skip Roger had one of the top 3 best designs in One Piece
He wasn't shitfaced in the second image
The first/older image is my favorite look at Roger.
His mustache was originally supposed to be entirely nose hair
Sick and tired of anime watchers coming on here using filler as reference for anything. Like please do some research.
headcannon is the first image is later on in his life as he was getting closer to death while the 2nd was the prime of his life.
It’s the opposite.
I'm aware. Its also non-cannon. Thus headcannon for the imagery.
The Grandline diet does things to a body.
New Roger made me like him
I like to think that the early images of Roger are due to the perception of people that knew him best. That’s why as the story progresses it’s a more detailed and vastly different image from when he was first shown. That and I know the art has changed a lot.
Nothing compares to Kaido's glowup
