I think the thing is this scene is the most substantial character moment we've gotten from him ever, because of this. But I think he has been pretty consistent to who he is the whole time. His conversations with Kuzan is also some neat characterization.

Makes no sense. If he knows about Imu or will know, he would rather usurp Imu's powers, sit on the Empty Throne and become King of the World, than meaningfully defeating Imu as a Luffy ally. He's just that despicable.

I'm sure Luffy does not care about companions on the ship, given that Kanjuro, Caesar Clown and Caribou were allowed to board the Sunny for respectively a "friend" of Kinemon, a temporarily useful hostage and being a great help to the crew (during Wano).
