Genuinely so confused over this
Anyone who thinks 4chan is threatening has never been on 4chan lmao.
4chan is not your personal army.
I mean, 4chan is the kind of place that would absolutely be someone's personal army if half the people on their weren't apathetic doomposters/shitposters lol
It's mostly a cesspool that's just ineffective at a lot of stuff
I remember a guy tried to send 4channers after an asian girl for just being asian.
They proceeded to roast the fuck out of the loser guy and imply she rejected him.
Unfortunately you'll find plenty of racism there too; again, I hate the fake hardass '4chan is not your personal army' because 4chan kinda does suck
*like, even before the mass harassment campaigns surrounding GamerGate assholes, even the founder of 4chan admitted he found a lot of stuff on there reprehensible, because 4chan was largely full of a TON of revenge porn and other, well, illegal stuff (he described it as 'like when murderers show photographs of their crimes', yeah, people on 4chan are frequently THAT awful)
the idea behind "4chan is not your personal army" is that you have to convince 4tards to care about your problem otherwise they won't do shit
They got Cat Bin Lady that one time though, remember? Harrased her into a public apology. That was a good cause, though
yeah and it worked because the 4channers decided it was worth their time. that's all there is to it.
Remember the flag? That was in the shed and people tracked it down based on the movements of the sun and plane con trails visible from the window? Ngl I miss old 4chan. It got me into cyber security.
there's no cause greater than pissing off dickhead celebrities
Remember when they noticed, located, gathered Intel on, and got a terrorist training camp bombed?
People are "into" cyber security?
Are you a PE Firm in the same way Subway was a greendale community college student?

This is awkward, the comment your replying too is a well known reference. No, it is not your personal army
Yes, the site even says it's a reference to 7chan, not 4chan
Fun fact: 7chan has no association with 4chan. It was a place for people who left 4chan because they got tired of seeing child pornography on 4chan because there has always been a ton of child pornography on 4chan
*ironically, your link also says it's about 'Anonymous', which once again has not only never been recognized as a formal collective, but has no association with 4chan. Largely that time has no association with 4chan, except that 4chan users have taken credit for it.
to the asshole trying to start fights, I literally never said 7chan was better, but 7chan is largely bad because it's an offshoot of 4chan and 4chan is, again, full of horrible human beings lol, like not 'r**rds', actual shitheads, it definitely has a CP problem because CP is basically the ONLY line it draws to remove content, but that means that where every other website CP is the bare minimum, 4chan is where it is literally the only content that can get banned, on a site with minimal moderation to actually stop it
4chan is supposed to ban CP, but since it refuses to utilize proper moderation tools, 4chan depends on community reporting to know when it pops up, and 4chan is full of libertarians who refuse to ever report misconduct, at best they will report it to their local law enforcement, but generally speaking 4chan's official moderation stance has always been 'hey, if it's illegal, you should call the cops, we'll have to remove it if somebody gets arrested for it'
What even are you talking about
There has never, ever, "always been a ton of CP on 4chan". that's just a straight up lie. If someone posts CP on 4chan it won't survive for more than a couple minutes.
And you think 7chan is supposed to be "better" than 4chan at that? Guess which website has dedicated drawn underage pornography boards? hint: it's not 4chan
edit: lol he blocked me
Yes, the site even says it's a reference to 7chan, not 4chan
If you read more than just the first line of the link:
Prevalence
The phrase eventually spread off to other sites and chanboards, most notably 4chan. where it is now a commonly used phrase.
At their best, 4chan is chaotic neutral. They could be capable of evil minion type stuff, but they do not take kindly at all being someone's minion. It's their version of asking for upvotes.
Again, 4channers are perfectly fine being somebody's minion, it's just the people there aren't all world-class hackers
Hence why they stole that catchphrase from Anonymous
That seems to go against the grain of "4chan is not your personal army" which is often a cautionary tale when it doesn't get followed.
Rule 10.
Unless they find it funny enough or they hate the target enough. I've seen enough shit on /b/ especially that I wouldn't doubt if they went after someone for the fun of it
unfortunately there are other places on the internet that totally would, but a 4chan threat wouldn't faze me.
Is 4chan still down? Or is it back
it came back after a week or two
4chan can and has done some real shit, but you typically see that when youâve got a cause that just about the whole damn site rallies behind. When they get together, itâs actually really impressive what 4chan can accomplish as a collective.
But, yâknow, good luck making that happen.
This level of pettiness definitely ainât it.
I never even said I thought itâs threatening just said itâs confusing to međ«© And I in fact have not even heard of 4chan in my life till today
Iâm talking about the guy who said that lmao. Yeah 4chan is just mostly depressed men posting angrily about the things they hate to distract themselves from their lives. Every once in a while you get a good meme or a funny shitpost out of it but thatâs about it. Internet Historian has some really entertaining and informative videos about them.
oh mbbb then sorryđđ
So⊠Reddit?
Sort of, except Reddit has a way higher percentage of people that can seemingly only communicate in movie quotes and unfunny memes.
Heâs making fun of the asshat in the screenshot donât worry
Reddit, only place you get downvoted for not knowing 4chan.
Ikr? Other people were doing other things in [insert your personal, horrific, internet sunshine time].
Working, studying, vomiting into a different corner of the web, being an offline child, orâŠnot even being born yet - lots of stuff.
What do you mean "not born yet"? They would have to be... uh... no that has to be wrong... err... Umm, I need to go schedule a colonoscopy.
Rule 1 and 2 works then!
/S
Edit: there was some thing in 4chan where you couldn't talk about it/it's channel, adopting the fight club rules.
It's the same batch that created rule 34 and stuff
Depends. They spent weeks tracking a celebrity and harassing him over a flag.
Thats actually kind of scary
Didn't it shut down a while ago or is it back up again?
Been back for a while
Getting doxxed and ddosed can be done on any game, but I HIGHLY doubt they would actually do it/even know how. Even if you were to be doxxed nothing actually happens really. Back on gta during 2017-2018 when the tryhard era was very prominent doxxing and ddosing was quite common, even so nothing ever actually much came out of doing it. I would get a few messages of people sending me my ip address to scare me but in reality thatâs all it is. A meaningless form of intimidation to scare you. They actually canât do anything unless they really wanna do all that travelling lol
Even then too, doesnt an IP address just tell someone your âgeneralâ area, and not your exact address; or does it actually tell someone your precise whereabouts?
it can be as precise as "your general area" and as generic as "the IP points to capital city of your country" (my ISP does that a lot for example, despite me living nowhere near the capital). additionally IPs change and get refreshed super often it might as well not really be a threat anymore in 2025.
like yeah theoretically checking all the logs of your ISP and shit, someone could figure out where you live, but it'd take a lot of high effort social engineering to get even remotely close. not the kinda thing 16yo johnny the soldier76 player who keeps holding shift into 1v5s is even remotely able to accomplish.
EDIT: there are also more precise unique IPs but they are rarely used for random citizens, they tend to be handled by companies, groups etc.
Overwatch doesnât expose your IP address to other players. All traffic flows through Blizzardâs servers.
No but get the MAC address and brick the hardware instead.
Brick the hardware?
Yes. Exactly what I said.
Please do go on, I'm excited to hear how this is supposed to work. Or are you going to write some bullshit "look it up yourself" kind of answer?
Whatâs hard to believe about it?
No we want to know what you mean with Brick the hardware, like how you do it and which components you're 'bricking'
That doesn't make sense.
This is the way (I hope I never make you mad on Overwatch LOL)
This is outright false. You can get someone's IP in games that use peer to peer, that's it, and Overwatch isn't such a game.. You can't dox someone from an IP without significant other steps like suing or hacking their ISP. At best you can get a sense of what general region of what country they're in from public IP geolocation databases, and even those are wrong often enough that it's generally not done.
Why would doxxing involve IP? If OP uses their battlenet tag in other places they could find their profile on other website or maybe even a leaked list with the email associated to that nickname. If OP uses their real name in their email address you could then use the other information you found to try to find OP on facebook for example.
Nothing in that line of actions required their IP address, only required their battlenet tag which is visible ingame.
If only there weren't at least one website that logs your IP for the singular purpose of DDoS'ing.
No idea how xResolver is still around, but it is a scourge upon console.
No, it can't be done on any game. It was done in GTA because the game has a peer to peer model, meaning all of the players connect to another player who locally hosts the game server on their PC.
I wouldn't say it can be done on any game, most games use a client to server model now and aren't P2P such as GTA like you mentioned, meaning other users have NO way to get your IP without previous knowledge of who you are, you can mostly laugh at people who make these sorta claims on modern games/chat platforms.
Even if they travel to your location they'd have to check a few hundred homes to find you lol
People try to warn me all the time I'm "doxxing myself" because I just use my real name as my username in a lot of forums and video games, it's easy to find it with my "handle," and I'll mention where I live, but... man, I'm not going to be bothered getting scared about it, because it would take too much effort for most of those folks to bother actually trying to do anything.
But also because I still remember in the late '90s some guy from Australia getting my number and calling me in the middle of the night to chew me out over some dumb arguments on Usenet (I was a teen at the time), so... yeah, I've already experienced the worst someone would likely do with it. I just laugh thinking back on that, even if it was a bit spooky for younger me.
Granted, these days I don't engage much with people in arguments, I just start ignoring them quickly because man, I've got too much real stuff to worry about. If someone's getting that upset over a video game especially, I just feel sorry for them.
Yeah, you can be doxxed from anything that uses internet but on a gaming platform itâs much harder Iâm sure. And IP addresses donât mean as much as people think, I recently started taking IT certifications and IP addresses can be reset/changed for reasons not even pertaining to doxxing/security.
And while doxxing does of course suck, I can guarantee you an overwatch player like in the post doesnât have enough motivation to actually find your street address from the IP and show up. Iâd still contact the police over it if they do send an accurate IP, because itâs still illegal, but I wouldnât be even slightly worried worried about someone called MutantCat on a game showing up at your door.
I mean. People that know what they are doing can get your personal info but they arenât gonna be dumb enough to expose themselves like that. A lot of people are just bullshitting you to scare you
Once back years ago when the ps4 slim first came out I got it and got Minecraft and gta v on it. Had this friend who was the same age as me (around 8) and he somehow learned how to do all that. He said he could cut the power to my house and everything, he actually did it too. Told him to do it for 5 minutes and lo and behold my power cut off for 5 minutes.
HIGHLYTT doubt it, they are just a loser trying to get you scared. Most they can do is view ur PS profile and try to gauge as much info as they can from what you have public.
Alright gooddd bc thats what I thoughtđ
Yeah, so if you have the same nick in game and on socials or have been hacked with that username going in the database then they might know you [got hacked] and possibly try to find the records. If you wanna know what exactly they can get out from that or how they can do that check out âSherlockâ on github(search for âsherlock username finderâ on Google or DuckDuckGo or whatever)
They can't do shit lol
The best they can do is try to CONVINCE you they have something on you in order to trick you into sharing further info.
Yes, with the info about accounts they can only try to blackmail you and if ur dumb ur fall for it
The PS profile is often enough for people who use the same username on several places. I used to do that, and just googling my username you could doxx me lol.
I've since separated all my accounts so it's not possible anymore, but it's actually really common for people to do that.
LOL 4chan? If she said some shit on 4chan, they would laugh at her, dox her instead, and then send you a pizza or something.
Threatening people with 4chan is wild.
Hey guys someone dox me I'm hungry
Easiest report of your life right there his account is done lol
4chan will just "not your personal army" this person.
" :b " " 4Chan " " xoxo " Yeah wrap it up buddy
That's when you type "ok pull up"
console casuals use doxxing to scare people, they are fucking morons.
Had a teammate in rust that kept saying he would dox people and I have a background with network engineering and knew he was just utterly full of shit, but mostly just mad and that was his way to lash out at people.
What does your background with network engineering have to do with doxxing?
People who don't understand it often use getting people's IP to dox them as basically a way to sound smart.
IP has nothing to do with doxxing though. You can dox people by just searching the ingame nick on the web, finding leaked info in any of the big leaked databases available, using all this you could most likely find them on Facebook and you are pretty much done.
Most people reuse their nickname on several different sites and most likely have been in a leak somewhere. It's not uncommon to use your real name as your email address so just finding that in a leak somewhere with additional information of general location and you can easily find most people on Facebook.
Yeah, itâs somewhat surprising to see how many people in this thread have no idea what doxxing actually means.
This is one of the most cringiest things I've seen. I love it
Oh is that the hacker known as 4chan?
"check 4chan" in the big 25 đ„đ„đ„đđđ
This person has never been to 4chan
Only if your user is linked to your other socials. Donât fall for it, donât click on links, donât give them any peace of mind. They can look for a breach, and trace it back to you, but I highly doubt anyone can do anything. They might intimidate you after finding some info tracing back to what info you have publicly but donât believe what theyâre saying.
Block, avoid, and report that you donât feel safe. This was a verbal threat to your irl safety and I hope blizzard actually does something. If not Iâd also look to see if their stream account is linked because you could possibly report them through that avenue if blizzard wonât do anything.
If you really wanna play it safe change your passwords. Hide your public socials, and then report.
Hehe... check 4Chan buddy... you've already lost...
this dude probably has a BMI of 50, smirking to himself with a fedora as he wrote that
It's not practical to get the IP address of specific players from a match that isn't 1v1 because they have no way of determining which IP address belongs to whom in a match that has 10 players, so the answer to your question is no, not really
On the bright side if he's a dipshit he'll send his own IP
âHaha get doxxed dumb*ss! Oh wait thatâs my IP address.â
Can you even do that with Overwatch? I thought players connect to the servers, not to other players..
Edit: they donât - makes sense ig I donât even know why I thought abt that, too much tf2 or smth
You're correct, the person you're replying to is clueless.
Yeah I can very clearly see that after this comment: https://reddit.com/r/Overwatch/comments/1lv6ipl/can_you_even_be_doxxed_on_this_game/n24q7rk/?context=3
In your router's logs you can see ip addresses of players you've connected to but ip addresses aren't very useful info on their own especially in any game that isn't 1v1. Whether or not you can in overwatch specifically idk but it shouldn't be surprising if you can
I know a lot about servers and youre just wrong about quite some stuff. People connect to the Overwatch servers, those do not share your ip. You can see the serverâs ip, but not people that are connected ips. It would be quite silly. You could try to hack the server which by succeeding you would be able to see otherâs ips but thatâs it(pls donât do that youâll get in jail if you try, plus you most probably wonât succeed anyway). Youre right that it wouldnât matter, especially if someone has a dynamic ip or a vpn, because ips only show the general location, not a point accurate one, but stillâŠ
I never said you can see everyone's IP on an overwatch server necessarily. In the most technical sense is it possible for someone to get it somehow, maybe, but there are plenty of games that operate entirely on p2p, like the old call of duty games
They still protect the IPs if I remember correctly⊠and you did say itâs possible
It is possible, in theory, as your IP can be exposed even in server based games that aren't entirely P2P but I already gave reasons for why it's not practical, so no reason to keep arguing about it lol
"check 4chan" is obviously bait lol, it's like saying "check instagram"
âCheck 4chanâ like⊠all of it? Lmao
Doxing or doxxing is the act of publicly providing personally identifiable information about an individual or organization, usually via the Internet and without their consent.
you can get doxxed everywhere. question is only how complicated it's going to be. just some random player you met for the first time in an overwatch lobby? he's not going to have much to work with there I think.
Thereâs websites and paid services to pull IP addresses from console accounts and can ddos them, was a major problem in Xbox masters+ years ago
OW2 has dedicated servers so your IP isn't actually exposed.
However you can still get doxxed if you use the same name of different places. It actually pretty common, so just a few google searches and you can find a lot about that person.
anyone can be doxxed but likeâŠ.on this game and FOR this game is kinda crazy LMAO..also theyâre using 4chan as a threat like buddy ok. if you want to create a sense of safety though, report them for whoever they are threatening or if itâs a threat towards you
"check 4chan"
\looks at 4chan**
"where bro"
Heâs full of shit. I saw someone saying stuff like that once in another game. Didnât do shit. We all reported him and he got banned. Report his threats Iâm sure thatâs against tos.
Probably, but theyâre totally lying lmao
If it was a real threat, they would've specified a 4chan board.
.l.l.ll.l....lll.l.....l....l.lll.lll..lll...l....l.l..l..l..l...lll.....l.l..l.l................ll....ll.l....lll............l...l..........................l..................................................................l.................................................................lmk.l
Yeah I play in oce and we have a resident doxer known as Dark__OCE if you go to his twitch about me you can see a lot of his work aswell as a link to his discord where he posts stuff that he can't on his twitch about me.
The most common way to get doxxed on a game like Overwatch is to use a rare and specific username that youâve used everywhere else. If Googling your OW username returns your real name youâre gonna have a bad time.
Did you go ahead and check all of 4chan?
Wasnât 4Chan deleted
4chan still a thing?
Easiest way is that people tend to use similar names for accounts. If you're an average person, good chance your blizzard username can be related to other accounts online and that feeds more information which can get you to things like your facebook or instagram or whatever.
"check 4can" like... the whole site??
Ew report report report.
Didn't 4chan get hacked and shutdown too? I remember something like that happening recently.
The short answer is yes kinda. It's not hard to get someone's local area. This is basically narrowed down to a county or a city. So that's the best someone could do with an IP. It's very hard to find a very specific person over the internet and realistically won't happen unless you tell them your address.
As for being ddosed that is done through the isp itself but they still won't know where you are exactly.
I canât even tell if this is legit or someone joking
If your on console you don't gotta worry about anything
No theyâre full of shit lmao
Most of those 12 year olds acting tough don't even know what doxxing means. Don't worry about it.
Wait you ran into the hacker known as 4chan?
OP you're done. Leave the country.
Technically you can be doxxed in literally any game but chances are they donât actually know
Technically yes, practically no. I think out of everyone that plays OW only 4 people could pull it off
this could've been somewhat relevant threat... if made in 2014. Also dude 100% bluffing, since no links or topics (or at least tags) were given, and we talk about 4chan, it's a almost equivalent to say "i know where this guy lives, it's on planet Earth" in terms of content
If your name is unique and you use it everywhere then it's an easy dox

I recently had a guy message me saying that hese "marked" me and put me on some list to target me in the future. Nothing has happened, and it's been weeks. As long as nothing is apparently wrong, I wouldn't worry about it much. Just keep your accounts up to date in how secure they are. Like 2 step log in and such.
OP, you can't be doxxed through Overwatch, it's technically impossible. You can be doxxed if you use PSN to party up with the person because PSN is poorly designed and insecure, but assuming you didn't party up with them you have nothing to worry about.

EXPLODING VANS
All I'm saying is that in 2019, someone was pissed enough to say my exact town in the chat. I don't know how they got it done on console, but luckily for me they didn't get to say anything else.
Low hanging fruit if you have repeatedly reused the same name elsewhere.
Otherwise, very unlikely.
Ehh. Not trying to scare you just answering the question. Yes, I've been doxxed twice in overwatch 2 lol
I'm sure about OW2, but I got hit by a couple of ddos attacks in ow1.
Didn't 4chan get hacked and shut down??
This is equivalent to âmy dad works at Microsoft and he will ban youâ
Knowing Microsoft, poor Timmy's dad got laid off.
My dad actually did work at Microsoft and no they canât just ban you. Trust me, at 14 I begged.
oh really buddy, check your account. It's gone
My dad is the CEO at Microsoft and reversed the removal and instead fired YOUR DAD and deleted YOUR ACCOUNT. owned noob
wait my grandad is the ceo of Microsoft...... Dad, you're alive???
SON?
đđđđđđ
Id watch this movie.
Funnily enough, when OW first came I out, I worked at Blizzard. Occasionally Iâd tell people, but stopped when it was obvious they thought I was bullshitting
Why you leave?
Line manager was a horrendous micro managing narcissist. I knew this going in, so went in trying to improve the teams environment. I failed, but at least shone a light on the behaviour which eventually led to his dismissal.
Gotta backtrace it so the cyber police comes and gets 'em.
