My reddit account is old enough to get a reddit account.

I'm amazed the young whippersnappers know how to turn on their phones without tiktok showing them how.

(Meant with the same joking attitude.)

Hell yeah, gotta keep up that attitude old man, being jovial is said to prolong life so it'll give you a few more years~

Longjumping-Idea1302

I'm 29, in my OG friend group, i'm the youngest. From my university group, i'm the oldest by a lot. They treat me as i'm Gandalf, wise and strong, but old and out-of-the-loop. Therefore they're my hobbits.

It has been used out of the internet since the 90's, and gained pipularity on the internet on the 2010s

Idk, I’m not a native but I think its something from the UK

Since at least the 80’s.

No, very old English saying. Ie. Come over for Tea and we will have a gossip session.

Lkwzriqwea

Doesn't it come from "spill the beans"? People in the UK changed it to "spill the tea" which just got abbreviated to "tea"

JadeHana

Is it related with the " T or D game" ? Truth or Dare?

In which case, Truth, T, Tea

therealgreybrother

The term "tea" used to mean gossip originated in the American LGBTQ+ community, particularly in drag culture. It's a slang term derived from the phrase "spilling the tea," which means sharing juicy gossip.

JadeHana

Thank you!

punk_petukh

So what would've happened if she chose coffee? The attendant would've slapped her in the face and yelled "How dare you!?"

shewy92

What's the part about the beans mean then?

peppermintmeow

Spill the tea, honey bee

kira1122t

Yk how ppl say “spill the tea” when they want drama? The passenger is asking for tea aka drama

DrBlaBlaBlub

Like an alternative to "spilling the beans"?

kira1122t

Yes exactly!

Soft_Caterpillar5845

Beans and tea? What is this, Britain?

Marble-Boy

A cup of tea after you've eaten beans is a phenomenal experience akin to a cigarette after sex.

Soft_Caterpillar5845

Sure, but have you ever tried beans with sex? 😘👌

Marble-Boy

Saucy.

Bigsby

I dunno, spilling the beans is more like telling a secret when you shouldn't have. Spilling the tea is gossip

Red-Zaku-

Spilling the beans means you accidentally revealed something you shouldn’t have.

Spilling the tea is knowingly dishing on the hot gossip with someone.

LunariaVale

passenger asked for "tea" (drink), but instead of being given actual tea, the stewardess gave out a different "tea" (gossip) instead, the meaning of this "tea" is a slang for gossip or some juicy information, mostly about someones personal life or drama, which in this case, the captain has a different family

in1gom0ntoya

its funny how spill the beans has become spill the tea...

Mufasa936

"Tea" in this case is being used to describe drama, spilling the tea is a way to say talking drama. when the flight attendant asks the person if they'd like coffee or tea, and the person says tea the flight attendant assumes they mean they want to hear the drama or the "Tea"

__xXCoronaVirusXx__

Hi, Peter here to explain the joke. "Spilling the tea" is a phrase that means "sharing gossip." The joke is that the lady on the plane asked for tea as a drink, while the flight attendent gave her "tea" instead, which was a rumor about the captain. Peter, out.

BLAZEISONFIRE006

Gossip is bad.

silkhusky12

Oh no! You just posted your opinion on reddit!

prankiboiiii

Hey Peter, if you paid any attention you would’ve noticed that the flight attendant spilled the tea. Spilling the beans can be used instead of spilling the tea. You can listen more about synonymous phrasing on my podcast Joe’s Gold

spiderglide

As the other commenters say. I'd add that the joke is not funny, and is a waste of everyone's time.

Cont

Woman: Not that tea, I want tea with sugar.

Air stewardess: I have photos and video.

It's funnier if the woman turned out to be the captain's wife.

scottvsknives

She spilled the tea

Kebratep

"Spilling tea" is slang for gossip.

BlupTheBloop

on top of it being drama type of tea, there's a missing panel or 2 where the passenger IS the wife and the flight attendant is shocked.

P_f_M

I'm surprised that people think "it started in the 2000's/1990's/in XYZ community" ... "Coffee" or "Tea" in the meaning used here ... are old as dust and dates to at least to black and white sound movies (where I've seen it the first time and was subtle AF)

Lived in Australia for 26 years, England for 7 years. Am also a teacher of high school students and have the... luxury... of hearing all the passing trend language as it comes in and out of usage. No one I've been around has ever used "tea" in this context. This has to be 100% an American thing.

TIL Spilling The Tea is slang for gossip. I've never once heard it, someone says it's a British thing, and I can tell you as someone who's lived in England for 44.5 years, I have never once heard this, and I also drink tea religiously, so much so I even made a film about it.
