Edit: lots of people think British police give a shit if you're high, and would actually take the time to stop and search you. Which is to say lots of people here aren't British and have never interacted with a British police officer.
I don't know in the UK, but here (Norway) being visibly high would warrant a search, and they usually find something if they want too.

At this point (I've seen this for over 20 years+ as THC user in Norway). They don't care about what is BEST for society, they care about what gets them the most votes.
Legalizing weed, would have a very small impact on public healthcare. But it would have a HUGE impact on government revenue, and savings in form of not enforcing weed laws.
Couple that, with major reduced income to "black markets"/criminal activity. Research also show that legalizing weed, leads to less use of hard drugs and alcohol. Which are big burdens on healthcare.
Politicians also know this (they are specialists on public issues; of course they know), but like I said, best < most votes.

Sounds true but about every time I’ve seen it legalized in the US at least it’s taxed to such a high rate that the black market is still huge. More flower gets walked out the back door than sold through legal means.
This varies widely state to state, and there’s still enough people that would rather buy legally that the dispos do just as well tbh.

If you ever get caught smoking in public, appearing high, dog sniffs you out at airport, order something you shouldn't online etc...Uncle Police will show up at your home, for a "random" search.
It is even technically allowed to punish by law, someone smoking in say Amsterdam as a Norwegian, when they return home.
Shame.. Norway was very close to decriminalizing personal use a few years back.

In many if not most European countries, only possession is prohibited. You won't be punished if you don't have anything on you.
Most countries don't have police that go around testing their citizen's pee, blood or saliva for traces of drugs, unless it's in the context of driving and they suspect you're driving under the influence.
Just looking like you might be high (because say, your eyes look reddish/irritated) doesn't mean that police have the right to arrest you and bring you in to the station.

They did, but back then drugs were way "lighter" than now. For exemple, concentration of THC in weed has more than doubled in 30 years
New Zealand here. About 7 years ago I happened to meet the head of northlands police drug department. He ended up mentioning to me they had most people growing and selling weed in file but they were told not to act on it because there was so much circulating it would damage the local economy to stop it. That and it wasn’t really doing any harm, most resources were being directed to the hard drugs. He pretty much got the order from higher up as long as they don’t make it obvious pretend you don’t know.

Je parle surtout du cannabis, parce que la drogue dure c'est souvent différent. Dans les autres pays c'est différent, la France ne fait pas de différence justement et traite tout les stupéfiants pareil sur le papier de la loi.

This thread is so crazy to me living in the PNW of the US. I literally buy weed at a store next to where I get my groceries. They even take card now LOL. I'm sorry for all of you living under those conditions. I grew up in a state where it was very very illegal until recently so I get the suffering. Keep protesting and voting. Progress moves in but one direction on these type of things.
I mean sure if people wanna vote to make it legal why not? But it's not like a basic human right to smoke weed that it needs to be fought for..
Its about the hypocrisy. Weed has been singled out by other industries and frankly racists for ages and most of the world's drug laws are modeled after the US or took their queues from the FDA about it.
People consume nicotine, alcohol and caffeine on a daily basis. Now imagine if we arbitrarily took away your caffeine. Yeah its not crippling but why impede the liberties of one without the other.
THC is verifiably less damaging to the body than alcohol too. I don't drink. Its about choice in your vices within reason.
Even if the end goal is to stop people doing drugs (for exemple, for health), legalizing is the best way. So yeah it is about the hypocrisy
Exemple : i was batch buying 50+ grams from a dealer and then smoking everyday for 2+ months. With a legal supply i would just buy a few grams when i want it for a party. Plus blackmarket weed is 10 times stronger (in THC %) than 30 years ago, meaning you cant make it pure and often use tobacco : a lot of people become tobacco addict this way (including myself for a while)
Fun fact; Snoop got busted trying to traffic marihuana in to Norway in 2012 (Only smaller amounts, though). They got fined 52.000 NOK, which in todays money is 71.000 NOK, or 7019 USD.
Cops are hard on any drugs here. But society don't really care about Marihuana, only the harder stuff.

You really think the UK tracks all heroine users? I can assure you, they have more than Norway per capita. There's heroine everywhere, Police just dont have any resources to combat it so it effectively gets passed as a MH issue and swept under the rug.
You can get a recorded police warning for having heroin or cannabis on your person... not other drugs. That should tell you enough. Legalise or crack down on it, none of the wishy washy stuff in between.
Its not like heroin users are particularly forthcoming about it either, so idk how you'd possibly track it, but it will be flawed and a lot to do with policing

And on the subject of Snoop, he was arrested and taken to jail for a urine sample after a show here. Seems like he never got convicted since he could show that he has used it outside of Sweden. But if you can’t prove that otherwise, you’ll get a fine.

They tested him after a show. Then when he returned the next time "you had a dirty sample", and arrested him.
I mean, some people would not want their tattoo artist to be high during the sessions regardless of their opinion on drugs/weed
If I chose a tattoo artist I trust, I want them to be however they like to be to do their thing

I did my best works while high, but I understand your concern, that is why I liked to be open to my clients, I don't mind working sober if it needed be.
Trust me, I totally understand you. What I meant was that smoking pot while doing it is something I would hide by default. As a client I would know the artist, and if I know the artist I would not mind.
Anybody paying for a service would be upset that the provider was on drugs. But tattoo is art and art is influenced by drugs and pot would probably put you in a flow state. So they should understand your process if they are a returning client.
This reminds me of when I got matching tattoos with a girlfreind. We got some script. Same words. Different fonts size and placement. And the studio was the biggest busiest id ever seen.(Not a lot of experience so there is that) This place was "professional" pricing was pre set by the letter count font and size. I saw the artist go to the manager and ask for an Adderall. And bang out our 2 tatts in less than 2 hrs. It was a productive Day for him that day.

I think it depends a little on circumstances. In some sleepy town and being a teenager stinking of weed then maybe they'd stop you.

At some of the biggest music festival as long as you aren't openly selling you can walk feet from a police officer with a joint in your mouth and it's fine.

If an officer sees you actively breaking a law they are required tk intervene. Even if off duty... one of my mates is a cop and he hates going out on nights out in new places because he has to justify whether to step in and interven or not. He does ignore a lot, says 'I'm too drunk to be responsible dealing with this in a safe manner'. All good excuses to turn a blind eye
On the other hand if your not 'actively' breaking the law jt comes down to public good. Are you making a nuisance of yourself? Are you intimidating, obstructing or offending other people?
If not, who gives a toss. Be as drunk or as high as yuj like as long as no one is in danger. Light up or inject yourself, or give the appearance you are distributing - its a different matter.
But - keep your head down and your hands to yourself. Why should they give a toss?

In the UK the police will search you for whatever reason they see fit mostly racial profiling if your skin is too dark beard too long accent too thick (Irish in particular) or if your a woman they want to grope they will find an excuse to search you. Smelling like weed would be a good reason for them to search that woman and SA In the process of they felt like it. I've seen it happen to my partner and friends more than once for while she was just a bit drunk but they claim to smell something.
But if I'm being honest this has been my experience with all the police all over the world. After all there is a reason people say all cops are bastards.

I got a lift home a few years ago from the police because my taxi driver hit a cyclist (she hit her head, but was OK because she had a helmet on). I had weed on me and it stank I was paranoid as fuck. I'm sitting in the back of a police car with 2 in the front and one sitting next to me. We get in, and one of them says, "Can you smell weed?" I'm said I couldn't smell anything. They joked about it and asked if it was me. I told them no because I was coming from work (I had actually picked up after work). Im sitting there shitting myself while the officer next to me is side eying the fuck outa me. Got dropped off with no issues. I've never been so relieved in my life.

I'm from UK and it really depends where you are, some places are harder on weed and if they can smell it on you they do stop and search, where I am though as long as your not obviously doing it in front of them they don't bother really, but in Bristol if they smelt it they would search when I lived there

Yep. Smoking with my mixed race friend, been stopped and searched many times based on smell. With my Chinese friend they don’t bat an eye

I do know people to get a fine for carrying green, but they were smoking straight herb in a parked car. They kind of stepped over the line of looking the other way.
The local skatepark is a 5min walk at most from the police station, if it weren't for a hill and some trees, it'd be visible. When I was younger and hung out with friends there, there were regularly others in the woods surrounding it smoking weed. This was very close to a park pathway, people would have noticed, some possibly reported it. The only time the police came was when a kid threw bricks at the nearby leisure centre.

I am not british, but i am northern irish, so we share a little bit of culture, i guess, half from the UK and half from Ireland, and a good few of my family members are police officers, and I personally work as a bouncer in concerts and can attest that police officers usually don't care if someone is just a bit high and not bothering anyone they only really care if you are dealing drugs not just using them they are very unlikely to search you.

Distribution and growing is really the only illegal part of it, there's a personal use amount limit to how much you can have on your person too, at which point they'll lift you for suspision of intent to distribute or some shit, worst you'll get for having the personal use amount is getting slapped with a small fine

I've not seen it happen but I'd imagine it's mostly the same here in New Zealand. Police usually deal with alot of drunk people who if they find you visibly high they'd probably either just try and get a friend to take you home or if your getting hostile with people they mipe just throw you in a cell at the station to come down in. Like our version of the TV show cops called "police ten 7" is 90% police dealing with drunk and disorderly charges.
This depends on how high you are and what you're high on like most police won't care if you're stoned but if you were taking a bad trip on MDMA or smthn then you're obviously fucked.

In some countries, being high kind of presumes possession, and that's what they usually prosecute.
So they would search you and charge you with being in possession of zero of a substance? That's not the case in the UK and just seems unenforceable wherever it would be the law.
