Well, like the title says, I finally got tired of companies forcing me to walk the plank and I just decided to take the plunge myself. For years, I've decided against dropping my streaming services and resorting to piracy full time.
My reasons were the usual: I didn't want to get in trouble, not just legally, but because where I live, we're lucky to have internet, ~60mbps DSL, unless I go satellite or cellular (no thanks!). As I am not the only one who lives here and uses the internet, I couldn't risk it.
But the one reason why I decided to do this is EXACTLY the same reason why I decided to sail the high seas full time: we can't get good quality internet. I thought it better to download an episode all at once and tie up the bandwidth for only a little bit, rather than everyone trying to stream at once & consuming what little bandwidth we have, causing almost constant buffering, even the lower quality resolutions.
Yes, the streaming platforms constantly changing pricing tiers, and the ever-increasing amount of commercials definitely factored into my decision, but it was the fact that a decent ISP doesn't exist here was my primary reason.
I have looked up tutorials on all the different pirate platforms, so I feel confident there, but trying to find a VPN that I like is a little difficult.
So far, I've read to stay away from N0rd, and I've pretty much settled on Proton. But before I take that plunge, what does everyone think Proton? I've seen a lot of mixed feelings from people online, and thought I'd ask myself. Asking the people around me is a no go, most of those people aren't tech savvy enough to make that kind of recommendation.
But I have an even more important question to ask people: Do you hide the fact that you pirate from the people personally around you? Are you ashamed to talk about it in public?
I am a proud pirate, but at the same time, I'm not going to go around telling everyone that I do this out of fear that a law enforcement officer with some initiative might overhear. I mean, what I plan on putting on my phone alone might get me nothing more than three-hots-and-a-cot for the rest of my life, probably...
So, are you a sneaky pirate, or a loud and proud pirate in person...?
Just wait till you see how to de-google yourself
I'm trying my hardest even though I have a Chromebook, absolute spyware.
You can install Linux on most common Chromebooks
Started myself a week ago with mozila Firefox and duck duck go. So far duck duck go sucks 😞
(I'll take some downvotes)
Lol @ "De-googling" yourself, with a browser google pays 400 Million+/year to keep funded.
What is it? 75? Or 80% of Firefox funding comes purely from Google? ^_^
Funding doesn't mean that they get my data. It's not like they fund them out of kindness. It's for anti Monopoly courts probably
What's the best email provider then? I lived and breathed Google up til the past few months. Outside of my Android phone... all I have is my email now as I switched to Firefox with Ice Raven on mobile.
Try protonmail they are good provider.
Just went through de-googling a couple months ago and proton has been my provider of choice!! Very good!
> So, are you a sneaky pirate, or a loud and proud pirate in person...?
Somewhere in between.
Exactly, until I know what kinda person this is, I'm quiet about it when talking to them, or out in public.
Somewhere in between.
same
🏴☠️
I would say the same. Unfortunately a lot of people out there are sheep and lack the intelligence to live in the grey areas of life, to think things through and form their own opinions and thoughts...
in eastern europe being a pirate isn't big deal. everybody does it to be honest
there's ever no need to talk about it though
I'm more of a quiet pirate my family knows I pirate but we don't talk about it much we just kinda do our own thing,Im happy to use a seedbox to download my torrents and yes sometimes I do ddl .just not all the time I'm reasonable and I don't download TBs a week,to be honest I'm more of a music pirate I use pipepipe to download music from YouTube.I save what I want to disc or external hard drive and then I'm done
I used to do that, still do sometimes, then i used youtube revanced and just stopped downloading them, keep rhinking i should go through and download them all sometimes
I tell everyone. I want everyone to pirate!
Im a fan of knowing the audience it is shared with. Some people think it's an equivalent crime to shoplifting.
Glad I got back into it. I once too use to pay Disney plus just for old fox animated shows now without commercials
I stop being a "download movie" pirate. I just "stream the high seas" everything now as per movies/shows. But for games, i use a VPN. Can't risk getting sued by Mario's boss.
Bowser got em...
Same, idk why, somewhere along the line i switched from stealing the ship to streaming it through a spyglass
I suggest everyone pirate. I guess I'm loud.
I've also used nord for years and never had any issues. What's wrong with it?
Just things I read off of reddit. Ip leaks and whatnot. Sometimes I think that it's just that they made a mistake somewhere in the settings... I've used Proton free off and on a lot before over the years, but I never needed it for p2p, so I never got a paid account. For the most part, I don't think I can go wrong with either one, just gotta make sure to bind and get the settings right, yada yada yada
i try to help people that are less tech literate than me there's no reason not to really
Same here. I like to help out friends and family when possible, even if it requires a bit of hand-holding.
Same here too, my family requires a certain level of patience, tho that i just dont have, so unless explicitly asked, i just limit it to friends
somebody knows a good VPN to download torrents? i´m a noob, if you can help me with advised i would be very greatful!
proton
Loud and VERY PROUD, i say it to anyone who asks, thats the true pirates way! And on the question about vpns, proton is definitely one of if not THE top vpn. Personally, i get by just using clouflare warp and setting qbittorrent to download only, but thats not really recommended since it doesnt contribute to the large world of piracy and the if everyone did it, there wouldnt be any more torrents, i just do it because im too broke to pay any subscriptions in general, getting an actual vpn like proton and contributing along the way is what you wanna do, this is the way
Loud and Proud, I told my boss that I pirate all the time
King of the pirates!
i am a pirate, period.
i do not think in terms of sneaky or proud.
I'm slightly sneaky but without protections
Man in Canada you can tell the cops you're a pirate and they won't do anything. You have to get a complaint against you and be stupid enough to respond.
I think it's funny people have the need to watch so many lame shows and movies they have multiple accounts and spend significant time and money on it. The fact they just keep rolling over and paying to more to rent shit is hilarious.
There's 4 in my home so I throttle my torrent client to one quarter of my ISP bandwidth and automatically increase torrent speeds to max between the hours of 1am to 8am (one family member works from home), yeah files take longer but noone else is significantly affected. My torrent pc is on 24/7, so possibly consider a low power N150 device for longer periods of downloading?
I don't flaunt it but if asked, I won't deny it.
Spread the word like you are in the fight club!
Loud and proud myself. Fuck those shitty companies with declining service and increasing costs all because of greed. Not with me, not anymore. Couple friends sail the high seas again as well. Most though don't care and pay each month for a bad service they don't need. But there is an increasing trend back to piracy, for sure.
I'm at an age where everyone around me grew up in a world with no Internet and we were there when piracy in the internet started. It's hillarious to see that it still works exactly the same way like it used to in the 00s. There are millions of sleeper pirates out there.
Personally, I use ProtonVPN and haven't had any issues.
Sneaky, nobody need to know that
It heavily depends.
I certainly don't rub it in anyone's face, but if people ask, I'm gonna answer.
Except for when it's my buddy in law enforcement - then it's a "digital backup of a private copy of a media I totally own somewhere but probably lost it". He knows what I mean, but as long as I don't outright state "I do crime", he doesn't give a shit.
I'm kinda both but proton is a very solid VPN choice and they provide(in their paid tier) port forwarding allowing you to get better speeds on torrents.
Hello fbi
No law enforcement officer or investigator will give a shit if you pirate in the US what the fuck lol.
It's a civil matter.
I'm as annoying as a vegan crossfitter who uses Linux about it and people care about same as if I was one of those people.
Loud and proud baby.
The Pirate Way. 🏴☠️
I'd say 90% of people just ignore it, the other 10% ask for help (which I gladly give). I've never had anyone try to give me the morally-superior-anti-piracy spiel.
Honestly I am this but only online. I will be moving out of my parent's house next year and there is no way I am paying for 5 different streaming services all at once with there ever shifting and inconsistent catalogs. I watch everything on this computer, mostly on one website from the megathread, and love it. In this economy under all the insanity that has happened this year, I just cannot buy each individual movie or show.
Could you send the name of the website? I’m searching for one that has a large variety and can’t really find one that is good
One of my friends works in the movie and TV industry and he gives me a hard time about sailing the seas, but all in good fun.
One time his son wanted to watch a movie and it had a mid teen age rating. His son had just had his birthday, so he could legally see it. But when challenged, his son gave the wrong age, they got kicked out. Went back later, got kicked out again!
"You know that film came out in digital in the US today, right?" (But not in our country)
Safe to say his son enjoyed the movie that night 😀. And his justification was that he'd paid for four tickets already....
Sneaky way
Sneaky way best way, i dont need attention :)
