As an asshole dev manager, I used to set an interview exercise to do a simple class with some defined behavior in notepad.
I went out of my way to say it didn't need to compile, you could use whatever language you wanted, if you needed a random number generator you could just say "random()" , you didn't need to have the correct imports/includes/usings etc. I was more interested in the thought process of how they went about designing it.
One dude did the whole exercise and afterwards I said "I think that would actually compile." He said "Probably." It did. He got hired.
