I mean.... I agree but couldn't have happened to a nicer guy. If he's willing to put out content where he's actively hateful and a huge dick then he should expect mockery in return. Did you see the way he was speaking about stop killing games / the guy involved? have you seen the way he talks to basically anyone he's disagreeing with? He's a total egotist, a complete dick.
Is it wrong? ehh yeah. Do I care? no, not really.
the way he talks to basically anyone he's disagreeing with? He's a total egotist, a complete dick
Couldn't agree more.
The problem here is that mocking him with a fake accusation is doing him a favour.
Because he will get more and more fame (I didn't know him) and he will just play the victim (to me I just see someone harassed with false claims), basically appearing at the very end, as the good guy.
It's sad to see so many people miss the basics of how to fight properly: this strategy is very short-sighted. He is getting hurt in the short term, but the situation will reverse in the long term.
I think its clear from the memes that these are not his code? I don't think anything of what you say is really applying here, the intent and clear result is a meme format pointing out bad code.
It's not about fighting, it's about people finding it funny to laugh at a narcissist who treats others like shit. like I said, it's wrong but I have 0 empathy here. this is a grave of his own making.
reverse streisand. By villlifying someone, you make them the hero to some people who have never heard of them.
I do game development in my freetime, if you look at my code it would probably suck ass, but I dont pretent to be the best there is. He deserves all the hate that's coming towards him, he had this a long time coming.
You just made the list, hope it was worth it.
thats on you bud.
Mana gem
You have been permanently banned from PirateSoftware.
StOp bUlLyInG HiM
only because he is bad doesnt mean you have to be too
Agreed - and shitty behavior should always be called out (as is being done in this case as well).
But given how many people are confused, it seems like that part has gone over most people's head.
jason himself IS a bully. Do you remember all the nasty shit he said about Ross? Or all the other selfish shit he's done to other people? There's reasons people don't like him.
I don't want to down play death threats, but I think he is greatly exaggerating the amount he says he gets. If you are sending him death threats, then fuck you. But I doubt he's getting much more than any other creator that has been in his shoes.
The memes aren't really much different from any other bad coding memes. The only difference is the dude that's slapped on it. If it weren't for that, you would have no issue with it
Who cares if the memes are "misinformation" or whatever. He actively and constantly spreads misinformation about people on his streams. That's why he's being hated on recently for the most part, he spread misinformation about SKG and nearly killed the movement
This feels like a case of memolution. People are now using it to hate, but I cane see it turning into a meme format to just show confidently bad code.
I can see it turning into something like this:
https://www.reddit.com/r/MemeEconomy/comments/i443e7/here_is_a_cleaner_version_of_the_trump_interview/
I got no idea on what is going on lol. Who is Jason and who is Ross.
Jason is refering to pirate software, and Ross is the guy behind stop killing games. There are plenty of videos on the current subject, and if you are interested then I'd suggest watching some of those, as writing it all out would be massive. Thought it essentially boils down to Jason spreading a bunch of misinformation, and generally just being a dick
Did some quick search, holy is it popular to hate on Jason. There’s like 4 video made on him like this week. I felt like it will be an endless rabbit hole to go through lol.
4? Try 10
Do you remember what he did to BatBoy47? Do you remember what he said about SeinfeldLover32? If only Garry had stepped in we wouldn’t be in this situation.
agree
Jason is “PirateSoftware”, a fairly popular gaming/coding streamer and content creator.
Ross is the guy behind the StopKillingGames movement
Who cares if the memes are "misinformation" or whatever.
What? I do. Misinformation is a serious problem in the internet. I despise the dude, but making up lies to attack him is crossing the line for me.
He actively and constantly spreads misinformation about people on his streams.
Yeah so spreading MORE misinformation is somehow the solution? There is plenty of material of him to make fun of, you don't need to make stuff up.
Spreading "misinformation" about his programming skills is no where near the same level as what he spreads
Tell me what's worse, saying he's slightly worse at programming as he actually is, or spreading harmful misinformation about the red cross, spreading misinformation about the show Mr Robot (causing people working on the show to be harassed), and nearly killing a pro consumer petition?
That is just the stuff I can think of off the top of my head, there is so much more misinformation he spreads every stream
The stuff he has done is obviously worse, and that is why I said I despise him. Now you tell me, is spreading misinformation on the internet bad?
To be fair Jason is fabricating a lot of hate that he presents as real people. I wouldn't trust anything he shows as "evidence" for threats he's getting.
I didn't mention anything about "threats", who are you talking to?
I just want to eradicate misinformation, no matter if it leads to harassment or not.
Do you know anything about him? He regularly actively claims to be an expert with 20+ years of experience, and a master hacker etc. He deserves every meme. He can flat out lie about his experience and capabilities, we can make memes at his expense. He has doubled down every opportunity he has had to come clean, not even downplaying it. He is a narcissist and a fraud.
He had similar issues streaming World of Warcraft and other games. He's very consistent with being a lying, narcissistic fraud across many domains.
I'm shocked he isn't a legit Blizzard executive.
Did you known he worked at Blizzard? He has never mentioned it.
I wonder if he was the first ever second generation Blizzard employee...
His father was. That should explain a lot.
I generally agree that he is narcissistic, I dont like him, so i ignore his videos and streams, i dont agree with bullying, ignore and move on.
"But I used to work at Blizzard." Boom argument crumbled /s
Counterpoint: who gives a shit about him and why? Other counterpoint: this is still in bad taste, even if he kinda had it coming.
I just think the memes are unnecessary cause why make memes when there are already so many photos of him putting his face in front of bad code that are REAL?
I'm gonna be the weird hippy that says "I hated him before it was cool". The guy was always an ass, dunno why it took people this long to see.
Do you know what I did tho? I unsubscribed from content that featured him, if someone brought him up I just said "I hate that guy, he is an ass" and then moved on.
Why are we bringing attention to him? When did y'all decide you cared, one way or another? Most of you are just making fun of him but know literally nothing about him outside of "he had a shit take about Stop Killing Games" and "has an ego about being a tester at Blizzard". It's really baffling.
You're probably right about a ton of people here just joining the hate train but it'd be wrong to say he doesn't constantly invite it. He is an unapologetic dick that wants to be right more than he wants to be left alone. People are going to treat him for what he is.
I agree the haters should be more informed about the different things he's done to garner the responses. My favourite is when he got on a podcast to ultimatum eve online devs over game mechanics. The lines were so clear and the audacity so blatant that it really informed me on who Jason is.
You are right, but even if he is the biggest asshole in the world, even if people have a disdain for him, it is no reason to stoop to his level. The way I see it, the people who go out of their way to trash him, now that it is socially acceptable to do so, are the same people that would comfortably do a lot of the stuff he did. It is still a form of punching down. I find it a bit pathetic, honestly.
You are also right in another way: the worst thing for this guy would be to be left alone. But this poses a different question: why are we voluntarily engaging with his nonsense? What's the benefit? It still only really feeds his self-importance.
I don't think the question is "is the guy an asshole, and a rather poor programmer?". We can all generally agree that he is. It's just so much easier, healthier and civil to just kinda ignore him. Let him scream his idiocy into the void, don't give him an audience.
I can agree that anybody taking this seriously is out of line and ultimately he is just entertainment for me. Laughing at him is fine. Pursuing him to laugh at him is weird. Death threats extremely out of line and the trolling much less serious but also not acceptable. I would offer a small pushback with respect to utility.
Before all the drama his reputation was actually one of a fairly kind, generally uplifting personality and it's clear that was a false persona. I think a consistent reminder, that to be clear he himself resurfaces, is a good thing. People should know about him being a dick before they meet the fascade in my opinion. That acts as a notice for both audiences and other creators alike. Before this whole ordeal he already had an audience so I doubt you could really be feeding into his popularity.
I do want to contest something though. You said it's equivalent to punching down but it's actually closer to that sort of response you get when someone parks like an asshole directly in your way. In that case the responses are limited but you really wish everyone who knew that person knew they parked like an asshole. You want the community to know and shame them for their poor behaviour. The difference is the community of the online world reaches further and faster where the expression of disguist for behaviour is shown. Normally people just apologise for the mistakes they make but since he's incapable people really struggle to let him go. Again, he has the ability to move on from this if he just focused on himself for awhile.
The skeletons in his closet will be wrapped around his neck by the greater online community each time he attempts to be a dick to someone who they believe doesn't deserve it.
It's just beating a dead horse at this point. Easy dunks for easy dunks sake. Low hanging fruit tbh.
Is this a damage control account?
That's what we call the "find out" part, not bullying.
You aren't the only one. Time for a reality check. Does this person really deserve all of this?
And by this I mean both hate and free advertising. I have no idea who that is.
All he had to do was to cast frost nova
Time for a reality check, because he worked at blizzard entertainment
Did you know that he worked on wings of liberty? I don't think he's mentioned it yet this stream. I'll let him explain it while he scribbles in paint.
box that says "wings" above it with an arrow pointing to the box
I heard he's the first second generation blizzard employee. Impressive, right? I heard he hacked the Pentagon when he was 12.
Does this person really deserve all of this?
Well, yes. He almost succeeded in killing the stopkillinggames movement by spreading lies and attacking Scott Ross.
He almost kill something that would benefit consumers/games.
Yes, he deserves this.
[deleted]
I don't think it was only about his bad take, he's a proven fraud over his numerous claims even before his controversial opinions about SKG. Like claiming he's a super hacker and an expert programmer, that and among many signs of his narcissism.
I think there's a fair bit of cherry picking involved, in general I find that when drama starts around a particular influencer/streamer/youtuber people go and scrutinize every statement of said person (it's not limited to Thor) and find all controversial statements, then compile them in such a way that it seems that the person is all about those hot takes.
Hell, I doubt that anybody would come out clean from that level of scrutiny.
Also I think that when everybody is throwing shit at the wall it's very hard for the person standing by the wall to do some actual genuine reflection about their actions.
I do believe that PS deserves critique, but the constructive critiques are being drowned out.
The problem is magnified by PS having a personality of somebody that sticks to their guns, his approach to discourse rubs people the wrong way because when he believes to be right he doesn't budge.
That creates a cycle where his resistance is used as further evidence of him being a dick (which to be fair he is), which causes more resistance etc.
That's why this has been going on for months.
To be fair it not the SKG people, it people who genuinely hate him for other reasons using SKG to hate on him.
No one deserves death threats, but the rest of it... yeah, I'd say he deserves it
I mean he put out a video about stop killing games where Scott Ross explained everything and he was pausing and on it saying his "opinion" which was based on lies because Scott never said those thungs, massively misrepresenting the entire stopkillinggames movement to the point where it was on a downward trend, on its way to dying and hurting millions of users.
Basically he did the same thing by showing something else and attributing it to Scott.
He can take the criticism. He earned it.
I can only have half my face on "my" code
Found the vibe coder.
Seems like just comeuppance for him to be the one getting mocked, for once
Every YT Short of his I've seen is him making snyde superior remarks about other people's work -- what goes around, comes around.
His entire career is bullying others in "why can't you just have a dad in blizzard and get a job as game developer??? Noob"
No it isn’t? Like I’m not a fan but come on you guys have watched a couple drama vids and act like you know his content inside out now
I used to follow him tbh, he always has that corporate positivity attitude that in the end revealed him as the corporate shill he is. Always had a positivity bully attitude like a fitness psycho influencer but with a pc.
I'll take "things you pulled out of your ass" for 100 points, Alex.
Yeah this is just straight up false. Get a grip
90% of his videos are about encouraging people to create. Like yeah he's been a dick about SKG but like...you can criticize him for the wrong he's done without lying?
Eh. I've gotten fucking death threats. That just comes with being on the internet.
Dude is an asshole and of course you're uncomfortable watching people make shit up and harass him. You'd probably be uncomfortable watching his streams where he does the same to others.
I don't care if he or you are assholes but I don't think we should normalize getting death threats just because "it comes with being on the internet". Just because you got death threats, it should not be a thing people just do to other people. It is wrong that you got death threats in the first place.
I don’t even think his code was that bad. We all have spaghetti code somewhere. Also, CJs code review was obviously bad faith engagement farming.
Also, the problem here is that mocking him with a fake accusation is doing him a favour.
He will get more and more fame (I didn't know him) and he will just play the victim (to me I just see someone harassed with false claims), basically appearing at the very end, as the good guy.
It's sad to see so many people miss the basics of how to fight properly: this strategy is very short-sighted. He is getting hurt in the short term, but the situation will reverse in the long term.
Dude is a total narcissist. The last thing you should worry about is his feelings, cause he certainly doesn’t care about yours
I don't care what he cares about, I just hate bullying
This is what happens when a fraudster is exposed. No.
Stopkillingpiratesoftware?
Nah, he's a Bully and liar
Some people need some bullying to remind them to stop being ass
It's honestly time we fight misinformation with misinformation. Because it seems like nowadays that's the only way to fight back, being true and righteous doesn't work on the Internet.
Nah Jason deserves any shit flung his way
So?
Yeah, it's only funny if his code is exactly like the image.
Like yeah he seems like a shitty person I wouldn't wannan hang out with. You know what you can do? Not click his content, and you don't have to listen to him.
It can be bullying in either case, and yes, it has gone way too far. Any of those posts should be removed from this sub.
100% agreed!
Ok piratesoftware
He started the bullying. Fuck around and find out. He deserves it for one more week at which point he will be forgotten and we'll have a new topic.
Bruh, this has been going on for months now, it has an insane amount of inertia.
I don't mean the part about SKG specifically, but the drama around PS.
Maybe he should just own up, say "my bad" rather than quintupling down and it would all pass.
What's funny is the guy made a video a year ago where he disrespected Ross but people are only picking it up now. Regardless, Thor apologized to Ross for being a dick a while ago. But, yep somehow we are still justifying the bullying, hatred and even death threats against Thor.
This sub is rapidly turning into a Piratesoftware hate sub. You can't just plaster his face on a bad piece of code and say "this is humor". If you want to make fun of him here keep posting his own bad code, not somebody else's.
There's this Jesus dude who reviewed his code. Obviously, it's pretty bad, but there isn't much coding that he could find in all of his "Dev" streams that Piratesoftware has done. Most of the time, Pirate just talks to chat, looks at steam games, and his subscriber count.
If someone put my face on my own code would be bullying
What?! Bullying? You must be joking, if you call this bullying. It's harmless jokes, and the person is deserving.
Most bullies would say this exact thing. They don't think they are bullying.
I was a victim of bullying in my school years, so trust me, I have experience, and if all it was were a memes and messages in DMS - it would be a blessing. Maybe it's a culture difference, but I can't call memes on reddit a BULLYING without laughing.
There is more than one dimension to consider.
Like you have magnitude and volume.
Bullying can be both high magnitude, low volume (eg bullies beating up somebody). It can also be low magnitude high volume, somebody being constantly the butt of the joke, constant low effort jabs.
A stab wound and a million papercuts can both kill you, at the end of the day you're dead regardless of how it happened.
Free speech baby. Public figures are there to be ridiculed.
come back from your real ID Jason
Stop bullying Lisa Simpson. That’s pretty hypocritical of you.
PirateGames second account just posted
I disagree
That guy claims to be a "20 year veteran"
Made tons of streams where he claimed to be hot stuff
Bullied people who disagreed with him
He is a bad coder and a con artist
Making him look as much isn’t smearing his name or anhthing
Besides the satire is evident
i dont even know who that is and i also dont care
It's not bullying dude, it's a meme, as a public figure you accept the fact that you are gonna get memes and people hating on you, sure in some cases there are people who draw the line and where action is necessary, but this is completly harmless and pirate software probably just ignores all of it, and if not it's what he should do.
It can be annoying tho. Not everyone knows what the hell is going on to get the context of the meme lol.
Totally agree. It’s lame. And you know what, I don’t like coding Jesus. That guy is a dick too. Beating up on someone for views is not it. There are real content creators out there like Wes Bos or Colt Steele or Angela Yu that teach and actually have skills without being giant pieces of shit. It’s not hard to be nice.
The death threats are condemnable and everyone who has sent one should be ashamed of themselves.
Everything else is fair game though, it's a problem entirely of his own making. He's a big boy, he can take criticism, which includes unfavourable comparison and misattribution of things as harmless as crap code. Besides, his actual code is worse than most of the jokes being made.
Ohh no. The bully is getting bullied. Have you seen the way the guy treats others?
Honestly. I find them pretty funny. Is it a bit excessive? Maybe. Has he brought it on himself? Ooh yeah. Dude keeps doubling down and making things worse. He's basically experiencing his own Streisand effect.
You fail to understand one of the core concepts of memeing.
Sometimes bullying and memeing are one and the same.
correct. he can get fucked. what is your point again?
Disagree. It is memeing.
What kind of pussy ass sub is this?
"Leave the multi billion company my favourite streamer alone" vibes.
If he worked for Blizzard he should know how to deal with it.
Completely agree, it's gone waaaayyy too far. Is the guy a dick sometimes, yeah. Is he smug sometimes, yeah sure. But aren't we all at times? People in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.
The guy has received 100000x what he was owed in terms of bullying. Anyone still bullying him at this point, is straight up, fucking weird...
Reddit loves 'faking' quotes and news more than pretty much any other platform I'm on, and I find it super weird.
I remember the early days of reddit when we'd make fun of other platforms for spreading bullshit, cancel culture and witch hunting.
If this is about PirateCode, I say we're not bullying him hard enough
FAFO.
He's an influencer for a long time now so he should be expecting this. Death treats are a no no though.
Except that's basically how every single meme works?
Stop being a white knight for such a clown, he deserves to be memed on
So all memes/comedy featuring real people taken out of context should not exsist and you have never posted them right? Or is it just Pirate Software that gets a pass? Exaggeration of a truth and obserdity are part of humour. By this logic every meme with a white black text or alt text implying the person in the photo is speaking is bullying.
"Exaggeration of a truth and obserdity are part of humour."
Is that why you're exaggerating what I said?
It is incredibly important to note that OP has never once made a comment in this subreddit until the PS drama started. Almost like there is an alternative agenda similar to the creator he supports. Haha.
It's reddit, it's internet, we are in a hive mind. something get popular even hating someone, everyone follow
She never said that
oh no not the hecking bullying. There must be few people who will be giant assholes, but there will also be white knights who feel the need to tell everyone to be nice.
Play stupid games - win stupid prizes, here's the prize
I have only seen two images of code with his face on it, the one with the ip switch-case (which I presume is fake) and the global story line array, which presume is real because I've seen a similar code-snippet in his live coding videos myself.
Also hot take: A person with as big of a followership as his, that uses their platform to sabotage a movement intended to improve the scene of basically every gamer (at least in the EU) because of their bloated ego that prefers to lie, instead of admitting they misunderstood something, deserves to be bullied.
Sorry but eat my whole ass.
I know it's a very different situation, but the internet clearly didn't learn from reckful
Nah, fuck it
He of course doesn't deserve the death threats, but I'd argue bullying a bully is the most fit response. He said incredibly nasty shit to the creator of SKG and anyone (constructively) criticising his code, he deserves the hate.
found thor alt account
Whole situation got blown out of proportion. OK reddit raised their conserns, bulling won't make it any better. If you don't like him don't watch him.
What's going on?
People are writing bad code as a meme and putting pirate softwares face on it because it’s cool to hate him right now. Not saying it’s wrong to hate him right now but yeah…
I'm guessing thats an influencer... Why we hating them?
He is against something called stop killing games, has lied about it to his audience. Look the legislation for more details
Tbh i don't care about it that much. I despise his know it all expert persona while writing code at a sub junior level. I always got reels of him "teaching" and its always the most basic shit portrayed like its amazing, and even then he is wrong half the time, it was clear to me even then that he has no idea what he is talking about. Seeing this know it all liar get exposed is satisfying af, people shouldn't lie about their experience and jobs
this not even the scummiest part of his personality, dude has a whole closet of skeletons that everyone's been dragging out. his head-up-ass responses make him easy to farm and root against too, so many instances of him insulting someone / claiming something, only to get clipped-farmed about how ironic it is because dude can't help but project
Yeah, he also cheated on his wife when he was 30 something with a barely legal furry or smth like that right? I remember someone in some YouTube video reading their discord logs and it was disturbing to say the least. He is all sorts of messed up. I barely knew him before the controversy only saw his bad reels on my tml against my choice, if he would've just been less stubborn he could've kept all of this hidden
the furry was a 20 year old male that would donate THOUSANDS of dollars to him, that Jason would get mad at because he wanted them to keep their erotic roleplay 'monogamous' despite Jason himself also being married + having a relationship with an employee of his while pressuring the furry to not seek others. That is probably some of the ickiest of his drama, but he's got a lot more skeletons in the closet, both profesionally and personally.
Yep that's that video. Didn't need to read that again🤢
the whole lyric wolf thing is badly written fanfiction, none of it is real lol.
and it took a bad code review for the internet to turn on him?
... fandom is weird.
"Mr Robot stole my code?!"
"How I wrote cybersecurity code for massive companies"
It's wrong to harrass anyone but it's not a priority of mine to see a conman who probs made thousands churning out clickbait misinformation now get dragged by the same crowds he thought he was 10x smarter than. Idk it feels similar to like when Beauty gurus were getting dragged over a bullshit vitamin controversy
He could log off for 6 months, everyone will have forgotten who he is and still he made lots of money and connections in an industry he wasn't qualified to be a junior dev in
He made money on Twitch, that has nothing to do with qualification, he also made money on Steam which again, has little to do with coding skills, highly successful games had shitty code.
Overall, I couldn't care less about this guy or his game. Sending death threats is still a scummy, childish thing as a response to arrogance or amateurism. The memes are fine, the people taking it farther are not quite.
To add. Never owned up to it and has a generally insufferable "I'm right all the time" attitude.
I would say it's a matter of how far it goes. Making fun of someone once or twice for a genuine fuckup they are not apologetic about is fine (eeeehhhh). Bandwagoning is shit.
People kinda see "they did [Something Wrong] so now we can be horrible to them" as an ok thing.
I totally get hating the guy in general, but tying this behaviour directly to Stop Killing Games is a really, really bad look for the movement. It gives the false impression that the momentum is mainly about hating on one guy who doesn't even matter in the grand scheme of things, and shifts focus away from the actual discussion.
The gamer subculture has time and time again proved that there is a very vocal part that does the cringiest stuff, like sending death threats to devs who make games they don't like, or people like this guy who fake their ways to earn money or work against the newest movement around videogames. It's embarrassing to be part of the hobby for this in so many cases.
Overall he is just extremely arrogant and childish which has led to many dramas over the years and will lead to many more. I refuse people to believe that people watch him for any reason beyond waiting for the next set of fireworks to go off.
It's a whole mess. Basically he sold the online person of being the greatest programmer but 1. when he does "dev streams" he doesn't code and 2. the few code snippets he showed where not that great. 3. He also was against the Stop Killing Games initiative but his reasoning 4. misinterpreted the goals of the initiative.
I personally never watched his videos so I couldn't care less about the drama but I agree with OP - this trend are just poor quality repetitive images of bad code with Pirate Softwares' face on it. He did some things wrong imho but this is not cool.
Did he ever sell the persona of being an incredible programmer? He obviously has a brand of being a guy who writes code, but I can’t remember him ever acting like he was especially gifted at it or anything. In fact, most of the times he talked about it that I’ve seen were him saying that you don’t need to be good at writing code to make something if you’re determined enough, citing examples like Undertale. He talked/talks about pen testing a lot, but that’s almost always social engineering, not anything code related.
Like he was clearly wrong about SKG and has plenty of problematic stuff he’s done, I certainly don’t watch his stuff anymore, but idk if you can really say he acts like an incredible programmer just because he sometimes writes code on stream.
I've stopped regularly watching him before all this WoW and SKG drama, but his message is more or less "create something, even if you're shit at it". He never once struck me as a good coder, most of the code he showed was more or less entry-level stuff.
Exactly. He never struck me as somebody who was particularly good at coding, just somebody with some amount of coding knowledge that did stuff with it on stream sometimes. The message that anybody can make a game if they set their mind to it was a nice one, so it’s kinda a bummer seeing people make fun of one of the few things left I find really agreeable about him instead of the plethora of shitty stuff.
But this is programmerhumor, so I guess programming is bound to be the focus lol
It's a combination of CV claims mostly, according to different independent opinions (aka youtube videos) covering the situation say.
Personal Opinion: Of the footage that I've seen only one thing really annoyed me personally; integer and boolean arrays instead of variables for the story state.
Never really followed him, but the few clips I've seen, he presents himself as an expert since he was a "gamedev" for Blizzard (turned out he worked there because of nepotism, but not as a gamedev), I saw Coding Jesus video of it on YT and he was informative, constructive and genuinely tried to give pointers out. But pirate software started to shit talk him and called him a bunch of shit.
I honestly think it's his ego. He can't seem to understand that it's not a problem to be a beginner at something if you just present it honestly and not ban/shittalk everyone that try to help him out..
He called himself the Bob Ross of programming and claims to have 20 years experience..
He was against an EU/UK initiative "Stop Killing Games" which is about media/videogame preservation for reasons people perceived to be disingenuous. Now we have a mob of people who don't understand either side of the argument bullying the guy.
Regardless of who is right and who is wrong, I wish we would all agree that it is terminally online behaviour to act so aggressively because someone said something about videogames. I get why people care about media preservation and I do too, but vicious bullying over such a long period of time and sending death threats over this is not okay.
A thousand times this. Yes, he did shitty stuff and deserved to be called out. But so many people are so angry, and just keep posting about this shit over and over again… why? Like, people seem to hate him on such a personal, visceral level that I feel like it can’t just be about his stance on stop killing games and the fact that he seems arrogant or whatever. There are so many streamers that are so, so much worse in every way but nobody cares about them, I’m just so confused by why people are latching onto this specific controversy so furiously.
A couple of things have lead up to it. Started with people figuring out he's very narcissistic and wont admit any wrong/fault he did, and more recently him being against the StopKillingGames, spreading misinformation about what the goal of it is, and claiming he would actively try and not get it through.
He's also developing a game, and has sometimes shown some of the code on his streams, this code has been disected by some people that it's very basic and not very good, so people run with this now and making up other stupid/bad code and putting his face on it to make it look like he made this as well.
I don't like the guy but i also agree that we shouldn't be doing that, and especially not sending death threats to the guy.
“Why we hating them” you don’t have to hate anyone you don’t want to.
Nobody does.
Google Bandwagon effect
EVERYONE google the bandwagon effect
It's the stop killing games that started it, but I think the persistence is because he can't stop taking the bait.
This guy has a pretty good summary: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gteqkdjQUQ8 (25 minute video)
Narcissistic egoistic and arrogant human being with a god complex who struggles with basic social interactions and recognizing his wrong doings.
... is the TL;Dr basically.
People continually forget the entertainment personalities are entertainers first actual experts second. The real experts on anything are not spending their time making YouTube videos to entertain people. They're off doing whatever it is they do.
If you market yourself as educational, there's an expectation that what you're saying is generally accurate. You can't yada yada entertainment it away
I'm guessing that the meme in question is this. Apparently dude is some programmer/streamer who was against the stop killing games movement?
Was he actually against it in the sense of thinking what big corps are doing is good, or was he against it in the sense that he didn’t think it would solve the underlying problem?
I’ve only seen some of this guys stuff before he went viral.
Sure he’s a bit full of himself, but nowhere near the level of deserving hat he is getting in the last few weeks.
I legit though he harassed his coworkers or something like that because it didn’t make sense to me that he was just getting so much hate compared to other people who are far worse
He was actively misrepresenting and lying about SKG initiative, when it is obvious he should know better. He also used nasty ad hominem attacks against Ross, saying he seems like a greasy used car salesman and refused to engage in a debate with him. He also misrepresents his own skill, brags about his 20 year of game dev career, and presents himself as a master programmer and hacker, who used to be called in to hack nuclear powerplants (not a hyperbole on my part, that's what he claims), but under any closer inspection, his code is something even a junior developer would be ashamed of.
What I find more egregious, he crowdfunded his Undertale clone, sells it as early access and despite his "20 years of game development" took 8 years to provide less content than Undertale did in 2. He will probably never finish it, since he started raking in money by making low-effort shorts, streaming WoW 12 hours per day and only version bumped his game in order for Steam not to brand it as abandoned.
TL;DR: He's a nepo baby without actual skill who tries to paint himself an expert on everything. His cult of personality recently imploded.
Did you know he worked for blizzard?
What do you mean? I don't recall him ever mentioning that his papa was one of the founding members of Blizzard and got him a job there.
It mostly that he against specifically how Ross state it, he support stopping company from not allowing preservation but he doesn’t think it a good idea to force developers to come with an end of life plan, the only problem is that Thor was a dick when he voiced his opinion on the subject.
He has technically apologized for it but people want him to admit he wrong and genuinely think that he actually almost killed the petition, which he didn’t, he Barely had any effects on the movement since it was still gaining supporter even after Thor video.
And Ross even stated that the targeted attack aren’t valid so there that.
Theres another graph that shows that the signatures tanked at the same time as he talked about it on stream. What ps linked is ofc not the whole truth. The reason people are pissed is that he completely misrepresented the initiative and invented problems based on those misrepresentations. Just go watch ross's vid on the subject
First graph I could find is this, which does not show a huge unexpected drop in signatures during any part of the process.
I still have not seen anyone bring any proof that he had a noticable negative impact at all. The only source people have brought up is that "Ross said so". Which honestly looks exactly like the misrepresenting of data and inventing problems based on that that you say people are pissed about. In this case it actually worked though, because the drama blew up and caused like 800k signatures.
How
Yeah he's a bit of an arrogant twat but most of the time he seems to be trying to help people with his advice. Don't think he deserves the hate either
There were a few more like this with shit he didn't write
gods gift to blizzard entertainment is getting meme'd on
