A regular person: sees a joke about racing a shark in a triathlon and laughs.

A programmer: sees the same joke and immediately starts wondering if the win conditon is binary or continous, whether the glass is half full or is just too big, and files a JIRA ticket for “ambiguous requirements in interspecies competitions.”

I mean, sequencing.

If the run is first, the shark dies and you win, assuming you don’t stroke out b/c your diet is Cheetos and Mountain Dew and you weigh 350 lbs. If the swim is first, the shark has you for a morning snack.

So it all comes down to the race condition?

Surely eating the competitor is against the rules.

As long as you can swim 1500m you'd live. Then can catch up to the shark in the cycling section.

The swim is always first.

Sharks can’t read the rules

The shark gets DQ'd but you still lost.

And what if the cycling is first? What if Bruce can actually pedal and its neck and neck?

Do sharks have necks?

Where else would they wear a tie?

ok but then the shark is disqualified for unsportsmalike behavior and they probably give you the medal post-mortem

I dont know, Im not sure what happes when somebody DNFs because of someone else. Well no, you get to go again in that case (or the whole heat), but if you become incapacitated. In 1v1 they'd probably hand you the win but if there are other people then I'm not sure.

So everyone remembers me as an urn with a participation ribbon stuck to it like a Warhammer 40K purity seal?

Eating other contestants is against the rules I think.

You are all together at the start line. Shark wins by being the only left competitor.

What if there's a flashflood during the race though? The shark could waddle through the run, while the human gets slowed down by all the water.

I say the odds are in the sharks favor, because chances of land suddenly getting flooded are higher than the river suddenly drying out.

If the shark bit you during the swim he'd be immediately disqualified and you'd win by default.

Actually the order matters.

Since swimming is first we’re not getting to the running section.

But does eating the other competitor and never crossing the finish line count as winning? I think in that scenario they both lose the race

The snark has a full tummy. That feels like a win to it.

Technically you are in the tummy so it’s a tie

It all depends on the order of the races. If swimming is first, the human is going to get eaten and never finish the race. If running is first, the shark is going to suffocate to death. So, either way only one competitor finishes the race.

I'm pretty sure eating the human would disqualify the shark, so really no one is the winner in that case.

Depends on which discipline comes first - if its swimming, the shark is faster, get you and eats you, so the shark wins ;)

You'd probably do better in a straight up archery competition. :-)

In this case winning is ordinal and depends on a sequence of events. W € {1st, 2nd, DNF} and the events = [swim, cycle, run]
