I haven't found any glee in the I-told-you-so's about this tragedy or pointing out the FAFO that Texas is facing thus far. However, your comment has provided a beautiful image of Abbott with a football rolling down the sidelines at top speed to let the kids live, and that has made my morning.

I grew up in Texas. Texas used to be a democratic state and it used to be all about sticking it to the big guys. Franchise banks weren't allowed in Texas till like the 90s or something for example. Now Texas is the mini-mall of the nation, allowing businesses to build whatever the fuck they want wherever they want. It sold out to businesses like what Camp Mystic had become, a "Christian" business, grandfathered in to zoning laws that made it ok to leave children's lives in danger. They knew this was a dangerous thing, they even tried to budget sirens that would have saved these girls' lives. But of course, it takes the lives of innocent children before anyone does fuck all. Hopefully if one thing can come out of it, camp counselors should have phones going forward so they can self organize and not have to worry about the only people with cell phones on the camp fucking off and prepping for July 4th festivities. That's why these kids died. They had zero technology on the entire camp minus the one nurse present for over 500 kids.

jbrune

That's loser talk! Apparently.

deepfriedabyss

Recently the worst thing is, that even when it does take the lives of innocent children, nothing beneficial gets changed. There is no proactivity. A state-sanctioned day of prayer does fuck all for the making sure this type of thing doesn't happen again.

Isn't it the job of the Coach to point out who did what wrong? Isn't that why we review footage of games? Isn't that why players get benched! If he's gonna use a football analogy, then maybe he should understand the fucking game and the Coach's role as Governor of the team.

RecommendationBrief9

This is the part that got me. It’s not even true. Winners analyze what went wrong so they can learn from it and come up with a better way forward the next time. Losers are the teams that don’t worry about it and keep doing the same things over and over. It’s just the dumbest analogy to try to weasel out of any self-reflection and/or culpability in a horrible situation. What an absolute disgrace.

Lloyd--Christmas

It’s two completely different situations too. The scenario he’s giving is during a game. When someone on your team makes a mistake you try to rectify it. But the person who made the mistake still needs to take accountability.

But after the game, like we are now with the floods, winners analyze what went wrong and how to fix it.

RecommendationBrief9

As well as coach will bench you if you’re not doing your job. Those city workers that refused to put in the emergency system should have been voted out. It’s unbelievable from every angle. No accountability for a single person.

IlluminatiMinion

It's a version of the Chewbacca defense

Stimonk

He's wrong too.

Football teams watch replays of games and the coach goes through what went wrong and who messed up so they can improve for the next game.

Identifying blame and then working to improve those gaps is how teams get better and win.

Lola-Ugfuglio-Skumpy

Yeah the way he’s describing the team is how parents coach peewee leagues, not how winning teams work. Can you imagine a football team that never reviewed game footage or worked on their weak spots? Of course you can, it’s a peewee football league. Even high school teams watch footage and figure out how to improve by fixing their mistakes. Absolutely wild metaphor to use.

rowdydionisian

He isn't even correct with his long ass diatribe. From my time on football, you ABSOLUTELY point out who fucked up and why. Sure, doing nothing but blaming and blaming makes you a negative Nancy. But never pointing out any mistakes and thinking you'll be champions by never acknowledging where your team's plays went wrong? You might as well start an adult Tee Ball league if you're going to be that soft.

Stubborn_Amoeba

Well my read of it is he said they are the winners. Maybe he overlooked how many children were lost on his watch…

siflbabyshifero

He also overlooked Winter Storm Uri in 2021 that resulted in 246 deaths and was a direct result of Texas utility providers not being prepared or “winterizing” the power grid.

Texas is on its own power grid, separate from the rest of the country, because we’re such “winners”, that our utility companies want to avoid federal oversight of the electricity market to ensure the max amount of profits.

That was also an “aww shucks, don’t worry about who to blame, we did the best we could with what we had” moment as well. Wheelchair bound or not, the guy has been a total villain the last decade, since he was elected governor in 2015.

Stubborn_Amoeba

And also had the cheek to blame renewables that time. Their story was that wind turbines fail in cold weather. Completely overlooking the fact they are used a lot in the arctic, it was just that the Texas power companies didn’t want to spend the money to weather proof their turbines even though they were warned multiple times.

marx2k

Also, in that specific incident, renewables like wind overperformed. By a lot.

Its the natural gas generation that froze up and ultimately fucked Texas.

That didn't stop governor hot wheels from going on Fox News and literally blaming the green new deal for people dying in Texas.

https://www.texastribune.org/2021/02/17/abbott-republicans-green-energy/

... only to then have to "walk" it back ...

https://theweek.com/speedreads/967540/texas-governor-walks-back-fox-news-comments-green-new-deal-says-gas-coal-failed-texas-freeze

Also, he needs to be impeached from governing over the one star reviewed state

The analogy also falls flat on its face when he talks about finding solutions. Texas had a power outage due to a storm that fell below a cat 1 once it touch land. The outage lasted for days in some areas. This was a few years after the freeze that killed several citizens. Turns out the grid was in fact not worked on and the state tried to lowball in paying electricians that came from out of state. All so they can receive threats at gun point by some citizens (some real and some BB guns).

Also people that are calling him and Ted Cruz out are met with lowlifes that are saying this is a time for prayer and not politicizing a tragedy. Abbott is a pos that has lived for free in the governor’s mansion for the better part of my existence. Of course he would say something this stupid and the state would glaze the response.

Who are the winners and who are the losers, Greg?

Talking about winners and losers while hundreds of families are mourning the loss of their loved ones comes across as deeply tone deaf.

you-ole-polecat

“What winners say, is they say look, we got this.”

Yeah dude, except you don’t got this. Not even close. More than 100 of your people died and it’s looking highly sus that state or Kerr County officials dropped the fucking ball. But he doesn’t want to even attempt a coherent explanation as to why that’s not so.

It’s a redux of Uvalde. 20 third graders were executed while the cops straight-up pussed out, declining to act until their tactical body armor and expensive military toys arrived. Texas dropped the ball HARD on that one, because they hired unqualified dipshits and didn’t train them well. And then, just like Abbott here, TX AG Ken Paxton responded by saying “God has a plan.”

What Greg is channeling here is the classic halftime speech of losers, that the players know is a bunch of BS, and which is the prelude them getting blown out by 40 in the second half (by Mother Nature, I guess).

Lastly….. he’s responding to over 100 deaths from a flood and actually utters the words, “In Texas, we love football??” Holy shit man - that is just about the dumbest thing anyone could say in this moment. I could’ve drummed up with a better response, tailored specifically for Texas “manly men,” in under 5 minutes. I thought this dude was supposed to be smart, even if he’s a bastard.

So many people on social media were jumping on the NWS immediately after the flood and I felt like the only one telling them it was the local officials and camp directors who were responsible for what happened to their community and those kids. I'm so glad it seems people have figured out who's really at fault. It wasn't even a hard call to point the finger at local Texas officials who have a history of failing their communities but I'm glad people seem to have figured it out over the last few days.

Last time I checked, championship football teams do indeed point out their mistakes in the locker room, for no other reason to improve future performances. Everyone on that championship team needs to own their mistakes to not repeat them. No decent coach in this position is not pointing out areas for improvement at every practice.
