What does "folds his hands on front of" mean? The metaphor flew over my head.

GamerRipjaw

Here in India, the phrase "folding your hands in front of someone" is commonly used when a person is paying their respect to someone considered to be higher in status than them, be it financially or any other aspect.

We also fold our hands as a mutual respect towards the other, but the phrase's meaning is always the former.

Ask_about_HolyGhost

…huh. I met a wealthy Indian family at work recently, and later on heard that they were very impressed by my manners. Apparently everyone else who was working had tried to shake their hands when they met, which wasn’t something they were used to.

I’d been eating wings and licking my fingers right before they walked into the room, so I just folded my hands in shame so they couldn’t see….not saying caste systems should exist, but I was unclean and untouchable and knew it. 🤣

Many vegetarian households do not like touch with meat since its considered impure in many traditions

PS: Caste/Untouchability has nothing to do with hygeine/meat. Many lower caste are vegetarian too. Its all bout a false sense of superiority.

frsbrzgti

It’s nothing to do with caste. Shaking hands and greeting is western. Indians have culturally always folded hands like namaste 🙏🏽 to greet each other. It is gender neutral and cleaner. You don’t need to know if the other person washed their hands after peeing or not, which having been to American bathrooms I can say 70% of the men don’t wash their hands after

trainwreck_summer

having been to American bathrooms I can say 70% of the men don’t wash their hands after

I can attest to the same here in Canada.

Juomaru

Since you seem knowledgeable - why is there a flower arrangement on the Rover ?

GamerRipjaw

I don't really know the significance of it, but flower decoration is really prevalent here, especially on auspicious occasions. Weddings, festivals, birth of a kid, all these events usually have elaborate flower decorations.

Buying a car is also a pretty big thing here, so the car is decorated with flowers as well. And it's not a niche thing either. If a car in India is decorated with flowers, it means the car is either new or has been gifted/used in a wedding.

Juomaru

Ah, that makes sense. I’ve passed by a temple in my neighborhood and have noticed they have priests in front of cars sometimes with like a plate or something that has a flame. I guess it’s a newly bought car that they’re blessing.

GamerRipjaw

Yeah, it's a ritual to bless any new purchase, even if it's mildly expensive, like electronic appliances.

boob_aficionadoo

In India we do Pooja of all the new vehicles, machines etc. and flowers are used in it. Pooja is basically prayers, we do it for its long life and smooth working.

lastinthegame

In india, people welcome the new item with a traditional ritual. We apply tilak, offer flowers, and perform aarti for blessings and protection. It's done to almost every valuable asset. Either Home, vehicle, household electronics, new work/business shop.

MrGims

I thought it was folding hands as in poker "surrendering"

HenchmanJoe

This guy is shaking hands with these people as he is their equal, whereas he's saying the dad wouldn't be on the same level as them, so folding his hands in their presence is probably a sign of meekness, or subservience.

It may have additional meaning for Indian people that I'm not familiar with, but this is how I understood it.

Agreeable_Rich_1991

Folding hands 🙏 in a namaste as a gesture of respect and acknowledgement of superiority. The lawyer commenter is telling that he is the kind of person OOP's dad needs and respects and bows.

Euphoric_Pen6654

Unlike the US dmv India doesnt require qualifications to lookup a license plate, so that is the first problem

Second is he accuses them of schedule 1 2 and 3, which again is an American classification as India uses schedule a, b, c and so on.

Weird for an Indian crimeboss lawyer to confuse with American legal terminology

He uses genz/gen alpha slang "Lil bro"

You can get a fair bit with some sleuthing! It looks like Lawyer dude did the brute force method on a public licence plate registry till he found the matching car, the associated company on India’s version of companies house/the gazette, looked up the director and corroborated with looking through the subjects Reddit history (and poss social media if linked). All public domain stuff.

You too can become an internet detective!

Lelepn

I’m a lawyer in a different country and i can say that at least where i’m from almost all of the information the guy states in the comment is publically accessible. The only thing i’m not so sure on is access to the car’s documentation based on the plate number, that’s the only information that’s trickier to get

Huh, people on their talking about owning iphones and cheap cars only and that they feel failed for it.

What a different mindset to where I'm from (Finland) where some flexing can happen but I don't think it's very heavily tied to your self worth.

I don't own a car, I don't own an apartment, my phone is 5 year olds and a sustainable brand rather than the common ones. I have zero feelings of inferiority for the choices I've made in life leading me to where I am? my friend who got the latest iphone almost apologized to me for having such an expensive phone, and felt the need to justify that he really likes high quality videos (he's a doctor, so not like he needs physical things to flex, he helps people daily!)

fatboy93

I get that :)

Its a different set of thought process altogether, though a lot of people like you exist as well!

iPhones/cars/watches and expensive stuff are generally flaunt-able for social status in the Indian communities since people don't really make much money between low paying jobs, erratic taxation and bureaucracy (read as corruption to get anything done). To put this in a different context, it is generally cheaper for us to fly out to Hong Kong/Dubai, buy luxury electronics etc there, and we'd still come out saving money.

One of the only ways that you can really be rich either monetarily or quality of life wise in India is to have generational wealth, and building it is a difficult task, that most people just live between lower middle class to upper middle class (i.e nestled between the two ends of the same tax bracket). Owning a car is still a big dream for a lot of folks back home, and having a stable 9-5 job without toxic environmental stresses is a pipe dream.

Excellent_Tie_5604

As an Indian i totally agree with you.. we may hate a lot of things but what we Indians hate the most is other Indians.

Scams, lack of hygiene, hooliganism etc of some Indians are some behaviours we also absolutely abhor.

greathousedagoth

That's an interesting take to me, as an American. I've been hearing recently that Indians can often be very insular and prefer to deal with other Indians. Both online and IRL I've heard people say that as soon as an Indian gets in a position to hire and fire others (particularly in the tech field) they suddenly have a team of only other Indian people.

In your experience, is this true? Do you notice a nuance there? I could see where you might want to lift up others like you, but I could also see you being way more aggressive about keeping others like yourself in line so that you don't look bad.

Excellent_Tie_5604

Rather than the intention of Indian helping Indian it's most likely the case of getting good labour with low wages... I've heard of people living in US and establishing start-up there but hiring the whole team back in India just because they can get away with low wages and close to none other expenses they'll have for a team working in office.

Due to heavy competition (and I mean very very heavy competition due to high population) wages here are super low and the expectations are super high.

I'm into AI/ML domain and I've seen companies offering unpaid 6 month full time in office internship and people rallying to apply.

Some Indian helping other indian simply to give a chance to upliftment is a rare case. People adding people of their own community is simply because of the trust factor.

In India there is lots of division due to language, caste, religion, gender already and some love to create even more.

Let me put some context. For a country like India where 85% of the population live below poverty, you'd have to be an absolute scum to siphon off public funds and buy a luxury car like OP's father. But OP proved to be a bigger scum by flaunting that.

Over the past few years there has been an awakening among the young working class regarding the enormous taxes they pay and the shit (almost non-existent) public services they get in return due to epic corruption at every level of governance courtesy of corrupt ministers, bureaucrats, government officials and contractors (like OP's father).

Such dysfunctional governance was accepted and tolerated in our parents' generation but not anymore. A side effect of such corruption is HNIs and high skilled workers moving out of India at an increasing pace.

So i can understand the commenter's frustration with OP's behaviour.

Also, as the son of a retired Indian government official who was ostracized till his retirement by the corrupt nexus mentioned above for not enabling their corruption, I would have schooled that kid even harder.

The flowers are decorative, like a congratulations in floral form.

The wet patch on the ground is probably from the coconut they broke open in front of the car. This is a ceremonial gesture.

We do a puja for the Car and ask the Gods (some people also pray to the machine God Vishwakarma) to bless the vehicle for a smooth ownership.

You asked for it!

Lord Vishwakarma is a prominent deity in Hinduism, revered as the divine architect, engineer, and craftsman of the universe. He is considered the celestial designer of magnificent cities, palaces, divine weapons, and splendid vehicles for the gods and goddesses.

Key aspects of Lord Vishwakarma include:

  • Divine Architect: He is credited with constructing numerous mythical cities and abodes, including Indra’s Swarga (heaven), Lord Shiva’s abode on Mount Kailash, Lord Krishna’s city of Dwarka, the golden city of Lanka for Ravana, and Hastinapur and Indraprastha.

  • Master Craftsman: Vishwakarma is also known for fashioning powerful divine weapons, such as the Vajra (thunderbolt) of Lord Indra, the Sudarshana Chakra of Vishnu, and the Trishula of Shiva.

  • Source of Creativity and Innovation: He is seen as the origin of all artistic inclination, engineering, and mechanical skills. He revealed the sciences of architecture and mechanics to humans.

  • Patron Deity: Lord Vishwakarma is the patron deity of workers, artisans, craftsmen, engineers, architects, and anyone involved in creative and mechanical professions. Vishwakarma Puja is a significant festival where people worship their tools, machinery, and workplaces to seek his blessings for success, prosperity, and safety.

  • Vedic Roots: While the name “Vishwakarma” was initially an epithet for any powerful deity in early texts, it later came to personify the creative power and the craftsman god. He is sometimes identified with Prajapati or Tvastar in Vedic traditions.

  • Symbolism: He is often depicted with various tools like a compass, hammer, and blueprint, symbolizing wisdom, creativity, and meticulous planning.

In essence, Lord Vishwakarma embodies the ultimate creative force and intelligence behind the physical manifestation of the universe and all its intricate designs.

Oh man, I love infodumps so thank you!!

Vishwakarma sounds like a dope technology god - I wonder what he would make of our modern tech like GPS satellites, mobile phones or the internet?

The Omnissiah Vishwakarma the Engineer god is a hindu deity that is well, associated with all things engineering. Pretty much the Hephaestus equivalent if you want an analogy.

I know people like this. Everyone that has actually shared work or school with people like that know whats up. Its only a portion of their "friends" they manage to fool. Everyone else can see through the bs.

I dont disagree with the guy at all but... I mean is this not a little cringe on his part, too? Not as much as the dude flexing on a personal achievement sub with something he didn't personally do, but still kind of cringe, at least. Cause like who tf cares that much and talks to other people that way just casually
