The first Treehouse of Horror was excellent, all three stories, but my one little nitpicking criticism of the first two is that they had the same theme/punchline, the family were the real monsters.
Different era. This was when Simpsons was still counterculture and shitehawks like George Bush Sr were using it as evidence of moral decline. The writers kind of leaned into that.

Fun fact: it's a common misconception that the house in Poltergeist was built on an Indian burial ground - a joke this episode uses. It wasn't - it was built on the towns regular graveyard.
The Indian burial ground trope was the Overlook hotel from The Shining.
Technically it was built on two graveyards. Well, one graveyard on top of a tomb. Looooootsa dead people under that house.

Can’t help feeling a little rejected.
I never thought I'd feel sad for a haunted house character but I kinda did in this segment, it was only doing its job.
It chose to destroy itself rather than live with us. You can't help but feel a little rejected.
