10 or 12 ply - which is better suited

10 or 12 ply - which is better suited

I have a '15 gmc sierra. I've been wanting to change the tire and wheel setup since I've got it, just never got around to it. Got some wheels the other day and figure it's time. I don't haul heavy or often, a 2h bumper pull or 14ft utility trailer with a canam is usually all that's behind my truck. When i got my horse trailer tires, i was told i needed 12 ply. My question being: can I get these 10 ply's or do i need to get 12 ply? What's the difference between the 2 and any advantage/disadvantages? I live in the country suburbs. Lots of dirt/gravel roads, riding through cow fields, and poorly maintained county roads if that makes any difference in the ply choice.

Thank y'all !!

10 ply will be fine. I would invest a bit more in the tires themselves though.

Thanks. Any reason as to why? Seemed like a pretty reputable company and reviews. I’ve always paid abt 7-800 average for tires off marketplace so figured this was abt average. Definitely don’t want to screw myself over though later on down the road

Generally cheaper tires are harder to balance, wear poorly, and can even break belts (e.g. Venom Powers are notorious for snapping belts). I recognize not everyone has the privilege of getting nicer tires, but I always figured I should splurge on what is directly in contact with the road.

For mud tires, if you can, I’d look at Toyo MTs or Nitto Trail Grapps for top quality. Raider Renegades or Atturo Trail Blades if you must go cheap.

If I can ever shake the cheap bug, I’d get grapps in a heartbeat. They make any truck look dang good. The same website had the renegades for abt the same price as the ones I posted, a little higher but not bad. I didn’t like the tread pattern on the Atturos so safe from them lol

I’ve had Atturo Trail Blades and they did great for at least 10k before I sold the truck. And I got them specifically because they were way less expensive than Nitto/Toyo and had the sickest sidewall

FWIW I have mud grapps on my truck (can see in my post history if you want) and they ride super smooth for such an aggressive tire and balanced really well.

Toyos are great. So are Coopers

I wouldn't want to put Chinese tires on my truck.

Okay ? And the point ?

I asked abt ply ratings, not opinions on tires or where they came from. Pretty sure im gonna go with gladiators anyway so truthfully the tire posted is irrelevant lol

Based in TX, all their tires are made in China/Taiwan, etc. Would much rather put my money and my faith in tires built here.

Okay?

And the point?

Still not made in America. Wouldn't try cheap tires made overseas, especially if now with tariffs they're still under $800.

An E rated tire is nice for towing and would give you better puncture protection for your gravel driving. With that said, I agree with the other poster. These tires look like junk, don't do it. Also do you really need that aggressive mud terrain? That thing is gonna handle like shit and be super loud

I like the look of a more beefy tire. Some access points in our pastures are also wet pretty much 24/7 and something that will grip is nice. I also take mine riding a good bit on some sketchy backroads. I use to have a Chevy on gladiator MT’s so I’m well aware of how it will ride and sound lol i just like the look. Everyone’s got their preferences.  But will definitely heed your alls advice on going with a different brand vs these. Honestly may go with gladiators again. I bought the truck with them on it and loved them

I have done a lot of old logging roads, oilfield roads, and 4x4ing for work over the years.

I have learned that you don’t need those big fuck you mud tires.

A good, slightly oversized if possible, moderate tread tire is your best friend.

No point in impeding highway drivability, which is most of what 95% of people do, to gain a barely perceptible edge when you run into a lil mud.

I like the big beefed up fuck you tires, oh well. Just as you have your preferences, I have mine. Funny enough you rode the old logging roads though, I’m central AL and where I ride is a lot of the old logging roads

Look at my post about my tires i got a while back theyre 10 ply and with the abnormal amount of wheeling ive done they grip rocks grass gravel can handle weight and being 10 ply they havent gotten punctured by a mesquite bush or any flats/leaks of the sort yet theyre rated for 80 psi i run 35 cause i like rocked trails and such but theyre honestly great look good in my opinion and they honestly dont have bad road noise if any, balanced out great too

Thanks man i try and keep it that way, havent washed it since i got those tires though. I dont go mudding so atleast i dont have to worry about rust being in a dry state😂

😂i knew what you meant and yeah the new ones would be dope if they were solid axle, they’d be better jeeps than actual jeeps but most companies have far gone into the half tons and smaller should be ifs trend, gm with theyre 3/4 and one tons being A arms too but hey atleast they ride good, ford was ahead of their time with twin traction beam and twin i beam though wish they still put twin i beam under the 2 wheel drives, now their 2wd super duties just use a gutted dana 60 tube idk why but yk new times i guess😂

They look cool. Just telling you my personal experience over years of buying new shoes for my truck.

Mud tires are more expensive, wear fast, make road noise, and don’t add much benefit for a vast majority of use cases.

But you do you. If you wanna spend more on tires and have a louder ride to look cool, giver.

12 ply are typically used on medium duty 1 1/2 ton plus trucks. 10 ply are enough for every 1 ton or less unless you are seriously over loading or using small to very small tires for some reason (larger tires of same ply rating typically carry more weight)
