Loaded my goggles and weedwhacker into my car, hiked a mile to the top of the trail, realized I left my goggles in the car. I thought “just a minute won’t hurt, right?” Silly me.

Rexappeal OP

Thanks! I was a specimen in the ER - doctors and residents kept stopping by because ‘this was a first’ and they were told ‘they had to come and see this’

Not super comforting things to hear in the hospital imo

My eye will be fine in a few days and I have the foxtail saved in a lil jar. Might epoxy it and turn it into art

Try having them pull out a medical journal and say there has only been one or two cases like this recorded. lol

Not trying to to one up you and glad you didn’t get your eye.

when i was 13 i had my first knee surgery to correct a birth defect i had, i can't remember what they called it but they said it was very rare. At my second consultation they asked if they could put me in a medical journal, of course i said yes! a few minutes later they came in with some cameras and filmed me bending and extending my knees, took a few pictures and when they were done they said welcome to hollywood lmao. to this day i'm super thankful for my team of doctors because they made me feel so special instead of like a freak lmao

I ate too much spaghetti when I was 18. I made baked spaghetti with bolognese sauce, it was enough for 4 people. I ate it all and gave myself a hiatal hernia. Which itself was not that rare but apparently overeating enough to give yourself one is, according to that doctor lol. He said “usually people throw up, it must have been some good spaghetti”. It hurt to breathe and swallow 24/7 for 5 months. :)

My mother in law used to make a three day gravy and that with spaghetti and meatballs remains to this day the dish that I can’t stop eating, it is so fucking good I’d get hurt every time, but never gave myself a hernia. You must be a really good cook, lol

I actually had a few cases where the doctors hadn’t seen anything like it before. They pulled up the medical journal and saw no entries for being bitten by a gopher and another doctor had to take a picture of the inside of my mouth after I accidentally stabbed a hole in it with my toothbrush

viper422424

OMG you just triggered a childhood memory. I was playing with a wooden dowel that was sharp at one end. It was for my grandmas hair tie, it basically an oval of leather with a hole on either narrow end and the dowel would go through the holes and hair. Anyway, I was 4 and running like an idiot through the house with it in my mouth under my tongue. I tripped and it impailed me under my tongue. I still remember my grandma holding me up to the mirror to look at the dark red perfect hole under my tongue. She pulled out the dowel and no hospital. 1985, what a time.

angry_allen2234

Lol, I was sledding at my grandmas house, must have been...92ish, I was 6, went down face first on my belly on my sled following my sister on her sled, she kicked up a branch, which went directly into my mouth and skewered the back of my throat before it snapped. It wasn't super deep, they pulled it out, made me gargle salt water, and I had a sore throat for a week, no hospital. I just remember knocking on the door crying with a stick hanging out of my mouth.

Idontknow123442

Toothbrush? Explain.

Impulsive-potsticker

I was talking to my partner while he was in the shower and I was standing in the doorway while brushing my teeth. I turned away (very quickly) to leave the bathroom and didn’t think about how the handle of the toothbrush meant I needed to be further from the doorframe. The bottom handle of the toothbrush ended up hitting the doorframe, pushing the tip of the toothbrush further into my mouth creating a hole about the size of a penny. I remember just spitting out a bunch of bl00d and putting a flashlight in to see the back of my throat! It was the day before my partner’s friend’s wedding, so I had to be tactful when drinking lol The hole closed up about 3 days later by just rinsing with salt water occasionally.

Got one of those in my eye as a child. Had dug up a large clump of the grass from the local creek and was planting it next to the small pond in the back yard, one of the seeds fell off right into my eye when I was crouched under it.

Wasn't embedded or anything though, doctor just had me lay on my back and was able to pluck it out from under my eyelid.

Arkyaker

If you want to keep your eye/eyes, Just wear eye protection. If you ever ask yourself or think “hmmm this seems kinda sketchy without glasses” just put them on. Sunglasses make this more practical and less weird than safety goggles😎

LordRekrus

In summer I wear a wide brimmed hat, safety glasses, earmuffs, gloves and safety boots while mowing the lawn.

It may be overkill however there has been multiple times when a Little Rock or something has hit my glasses, and well before I wore gloves I once burned my hand pretty badly on the side of the mower, and when I was much younger I was trying to destroy a tree stump with an axe while wearing thongs/ flip flops and that almost ended terribly.

I now get to pretend like I’m some full on yard worker while mowing the lawn, but it’s also just nice to know I’m protected.

Crpl_Punishmnt

Well that definitely sucks.

I worked as a landscaper for a summer and was tasked with using a weed whacker to remove an overgrown area on the companies property. I was actually excited, plug some head phones in, hours of destruction.

Peak of summer I was wearing an undershirt and shorts. There happened to be poison ivy or oak or something in there though, I got a rash all over my arms, surprised I didn’t get it elsewhere but with all the plant material sticking to my legs perhaps it protected me by the time I hit the patch.

Wear goggles, cover everything.

Fast forward to still in the business in my fifties. Cutting grass on my Exmark Zero Turn with safety glasses on. What is a weed whacker in British? Is it a strimmer?

Wow just saw a guy with a welding mask weed whacking yesterday, thought it was a little dramatic but after this I think he’s smart

Foxtail and grass seed is the WORST! I have to check my dogs paws and ears for the little fuckers after every walk. They can really burrow themselves into the skin 😬

I use a stihl and in my whole life so far I never use eye protection, never had any foreign objects hit me in the eye or around it , just got done with a ditch line full of rocks n high weeds and even running it full blast in speed nothing ….maybe it’s the way your using it or holding it on a angle where it knocks back objects back toward your face
