My tongue turned purple after a dental filling
Finally looked in the mirror after getting a filling and saw that my tongue has a purple bruise on the side that the filling was done. Haven’t bit myself! No idea what caused it!

Was gonna say, my sharpei mix’s tongue looks just like this.
I’m a dental assistant with extended functions (I fill fillings after the dentist drills the cavity out!) and sometimes the dentist will ask me to use cavity dye. It’s a liquid I put on the end of a tiny brush and apply it to the small area and rinse off. (If the color doesn’t rinse off that shows there is still decay)There are other ways to dispense this liquid that are harder to control, like in a syringe you squirt directly onto the tooth 😬 if your tongue doesn’t hurt, I would bet that’s what it is! Just a temporary stain. You can ask your dental office if they use caries dye. It’ll wear off on its own!

Ahh, so that's how they do it. I had no idea the sandpaperish thing has dye on it.
Articulating paper dye rubs off easily when wet, and I've never seen it mark the tongue.

Lol, they probably used the wrong tip and it loosened itself up and poured caries indicator everywhere. It's happened to me before chairside with glycerin. Caries indicator stains everything, you're lucky you don't have blue lips 😂

I am surprised they didn't talk to you about it right then and there... My Dentist immediately started talking about what had happened, and that I will expect to have a dark mark there permanently but that it is benign. In my case, it's a molar that really won't be visible, in yours that is going to be forever noticeable...
Tongues heal and regenerate like crazy so I wonder if it is permanent or not. I might see if Google has an answer and report back. Lol
Edit: nowhere says that the tongue is any different and it's likely permanent. OP would have to do laser treatments or have it surgically removed. :/

Hopefully you're seizure free like I am now. Had about 10 as a kid with epilepsy but it was only seizures from my neck up and I was full conscious but took meds and now they say it's not an issue anymore.

I'm sick of medical professionals hurting us and not apologizing. I had my femur accidentally broke when I was 12- they were supposed to remove my metal but instead broke the hardest bone in the body to break on a 12 year old child. I wasn't flagged as at risk for bone degeneration so something fucky happened.

What modern dentist still uses amalgam?

Genuinely curious about this. In what situations would they be preferable or better to use over a composite?
In areas where it's difficult or impossible to isolate from saliva, or in areas at high risk for recurrent decay. Composites do really well when properly cleaned, but they have a higher risk for decay due to moisture contamination, microgaps from shrinkage, etc. Amalgams are much more resistant to decay, you just have ugly restorations that are prone to fracture teeth decades later (plus, cinnabar mining is environmentally ruinous). Earlier I was placing them in wisdom teeth because the patient didn't want extractions. The plaque was pretty much caked over the decay and the patient was salivating like a fire hydrant, so composites are a no-go. I did place another composite at the same appointment, but it was further towards the front of the mouth.

Amalgam fillings contain mercury, which is toxic under certain conditions. It's fine for use as a filling material, but it's bad for the environment. Eventually it can end up in the environment, like if the dentist doesn't properly dispose of their extra amalgam or if you're cremated after a long and happy life. It has been phased out or banned in a lot of countries, and is being phased out in the US as well.
The primary problem is with cinnabar mining, which is overwhelmingly banned in developed countries because it poisons the land for centuries. I have an amalgam disposal company that I work with, we take great care to prevent contamination, but I can't help that it's mined from developing countries. I occasionally use it when needed, I just hope RMGI's improve before it's banned here.

It's fine. You have elemental mercury, not methylmercury. The mercury in your mouth doesn't reach your lungs, so you have essentially zero bioconversion to the dangerous form.

Hey, no problem. If you have regular mercury and attach a carbon molecule to it you get methylmercury (dangerous). A small amount of that happens in the lungs, which is why it's dangerous to huff mercury spills over long periods of time. Saliva prevents dental mercury from reaching the lungs so it's cool. You just swallow it and pee it out within a few days. However, alluvial bacteria are little methylmercury producing machines, which is why it's so dangerous when regular mercury gets into waterways, especially slow-moving ones.

that being said there were were quite a few incidents during covid where people had something similar happen to them and died of a heart attack a few hours later. so if you had covid recently and if your not american i would hike it to the ER and tell them about your tongue turning black and opt for an ekg/ecg
Dentist here. That’s caries indicator. It’s a dye we use some times to make sure we got all the cavities out. It’ll stain the shit out of soft tissue. That’ll be gone in 12-24 hours.

The only time my teeth have been flossed in my life was at the dentist office. Is it common for them to use it? I’ve never experienced the snitch juice but the past few times I’ve gone I’ve deliberately said “I know you are going to tell me I need to floss more. I will say that I will floss more, but i’m gonna be honest, I’m not going to floss more.”

Yup, especially once you start and realize how much stuff is kicking around between your teeth, you realize you're nose-blind to your stankin'-ass face hole. The whole not getting cavities starting between your teeth is just a bonus, basically.
If you're not a regular flosser, try it sometime and smell the floss afterward. Then tell me you're cool with leaving that nastiness in your mouth.
Also, for the love of God, waterpick or use string floss and use a clean section between each gap. Floss sticks are awesome for some stubborn food stuck in a particular tooth but it's not hygienic to use one on your whole mouth. Just spreading bacteria around.
You’d still be better off using one floss pick for your whole mouth than not flossing at all, so I wouldn’t discourage people from using them. The important thing with brushing and flossing is breaking up the biofilm on your teeth.
My ex husband almost never flossed, and it was SO NOTICEABLE. I finally got him to go to the dentist for a cleaning and WOW did it make a difference. Well, on his teeth at least. Not our marriage.

I’m aware. It’s just such a low priority thing for me to worry about compared to other shit. Every time I’ve gone to the dentists there’s only been little build up and they floss for hardly any time at all.
Never had a cavity, never had braces, teeth has always been nice and straight, teeth were also sealed when I was younger with that cancer film or whatever. No one had ever mentioned my breath, I’ve only gotten compliments of how I smell overall (I do really good with hygiene sans flossing). So rn I’m lucky at 29 I guess.
My dad’s teeth fell apart though, but I’m pretty sure that was from alcohol abuse for decades and smoking cigarettes and chewing tobacco. He had those super white veneers or whatever that look unsettling.
A subset of people do naturally have extremely durable, cavity resistant tooth enamel. It can vary how long this superpower lasts, though. Enamel is just enamel, and it will soften and wear down eventually. Out of all the pain and issues that you can develop as you get older, dealing with serious, but preventable, teeth issues can become an absolute nightmare. Those water flossers aren't as good as traditional flossing, but are much better than nothing (and less annoying for people who hate flossing). Might be worth starting there.
Water flossers look absolutely nasty to use considering one of my friends was growing mold in theirs.
You're supposed to clean it regularly, or at the very least don't let stagnant water sit in it.
Suck a little peroxide through it and let it sit overnight every week or two. All clean.

Haha that ‘snitch juice’ is actually the dental plaque or biofilm indicator which guides us dentists when we do cleans / guided biofilm therapy, it may look similar in colour to the caries dye/indicator that was mentioned but it’s actually different

How do you use it?
Example: I work in a body shop. It's common, especially during the priming phase of the refinishing process, to apply a 'guide coat' to the primer. Basically, the primer is a flat grey, the guide coat is literally just black spray paint that splatters dots all over the primer.
The purpose is so, when you sand the primer down, any remaining black dots on the panel means those are low spots in the primer / panel / body filler and the painter should keep block sanding the area until all the dots are gone. Once there are no dots, you can be fairly confident you have a nice even surface to apply your base and then clear.
Similar to teeth? Keep drilling until the dye is gone, as I assume the dye will fall into the cavity.
Similar. More to do with texture/presence of bacteria. The inside of your tooth is pretty rock hard. But cavities give it the consistency of a firm leather. We remove leather (decay) until we get to hard tooth structure. Our explorer will tink and slide like it’s glass when it’s healthy/hard tooth structure.
The indicator will stain the leather stuff the color of the indicator (red, green and black are most common). That way you can just look in and go “missed a spot.”

Lol, no probs. I've probably had 30+ fillings done over the years now (most being replacements of worn fillings). Never had the dye done before, but I always like know what is going on during procedures.
Every single operation any family member goes through (so far, cancer treatments, back fusions, open heart surgery), I always look up the operations on youtube and watch them so I can understand what is going on.

I used it fresh out of school because I didn’t have a faculty member to pat me on the back and say “well done champ.” But now, after 13 years, I can just kinda look and feel and know it’s good. That said, I know a guy that’s been doing those for 30 years and EVERY tooth get hit with indicator while he’s working on it.
Makes sense. It's easy for humans to fall into routines, so do the staining long enough, just becomes step number X in your procedure from now on.

My dentist was using a standard handpiece for a class V and inflated my whole face. Took like four days to go down… big mad. He couldn’t find the retraction cord afterwards. So I had to go to oral surgeon. He paid for it thankfully. [That is all]
It’s called an air embolism. It’s a very real possibility with class 5 restorations. First time I did it, I found a video from a SUPER FAMOUS dentist named Frank Spear. He literally said “if you haven’t done it yet, just wait.” Honestly, it was just bad luck for both of you.

More thank likely not for a couple reasons. We don’t usually use it on adults. Usually used on children or elderly. That’s because it will stain the tooth black permanently. And I doubt the young lady wants to walk around with a black tooth. Also SDF can cause chemical burns too. So she would be talking about more than just some black. Haha.
We also use rubber dams (or are supposed to) when we use SDF to prevent chemical burns.
