Getting into MoP with the pre patch live and leveling a human prot Paladin. I’m coming off anniversary where Prot Paladin is hot garbage unless just running 5 man dungeons with really good gear. I would like to get into MoP raiding at some point, would I be able to find a MT/OT slot somewhere? Is Prot Paladin a viable raid tank?
Is Blood DK better? I’m debating on getting to 55 and picking up Blood DK because I loved it back in the day in OG Wrath and Cata. I never played MoP so unsure how these classes perform.
Prot pally is one of if not THE best tank in mop once you get haste (so a bit later in xpac with gear) they are incredibly fun to play in general and are very well optimized in mop.
Brew has the top spot but is a high apm more difficult class to play at a high level.
Blood dks are great but the “dk is king tank” is slop left over from cata where they are the best tank and like 70% of tanks are dks.
I think people equate best with easiest, and Blood DK is by far the easiest tank class to play at a high level.
I agree with the sentiment but can’t agree with dk being easiest in mop. They have a great kit and ARE easy, but pally is very easy and has better overall utility for the group a more well rounded kit and and is less complex on how to make the self healing/sustain work.
Dk you have to maintain actives and time your strikes with dmg received in a window to maximize self healing. It’s not hard but it’s more complex to weave than pally imo.
Pally are AS easy or arguably even easier. and with the MOP reworks they are absolute monsters once they get even a little haste stat.
DK is super easy, which is why its so popular. The self sustain is crazy (and easy) and its super easy to grasp the rotation and way less forgiving when you make a mistake. Its def the most beginner friendly tank class for Phase 1 in MOP, thats not debatable imo.
Once Pallys start stacking haste, yah they become monsters.
The only tank that is in a rough spot in MoP is guardian druid. Prot paladin starts to shine later with a lot more haste on their gear
Every tank is perfectly viable in MoP. Is prot paladin the best? Probably not, but still absolutely viable. Blood DK will be better for getting a spot though, both because of performance and community perception.
Yes 100%, they will become much much better though as you can increase your haste.
All the tank classes have a niche. Honestly, you should give serious consideration to the offspecs- several fights are one tank fights. Are you happier playing Ret when you need to swap or Frost/Unholy?
Is Ret a viable DPS spec if needed for one or two fights? Ret in anniversary is basically a meme spec.
Honestly the "viability" of the OT offspec doesn't matter, because it's bound to do more damage than a tank spec without Vengeance. PUG raids aren't going to be selecting OT classes based on the viability of the offspec.
The balance of classes in anniversary, or SOD, or Retail, or any other version of World of Warcraft has zero bearing on how good a spec will be in Mists Classic, including the original release of Mists and private servers, since Mists Classic is getting balance changes.
Ret is in a very good spot after beta changes, moved up to A tier.
You need to shift your thinking away from anniversary - all classes/specs are viable and generally fun compared to the meme specs from vanilla.
It's not. They look good in prepatch due to high haste. They are gonna be bottom tier in prebis and climb to bottom mid in P1 bis. I suspect they will be towards the top at the end of the expansion.
Prot pally is superb you will be absolutely fine with it in all content. The amount of BDK glazing that is going is amazing. People are gunna learn pretty sharpish in t14 that bdks are squishy. Once your average raid group has watched the blood dk "hero" main tank get gibbed a couple times on stone dogs tanking two the crying will start.
Blood DK is the best tank
Blizzard made balance changes during MoP classic beta, which gave Prot Paladin a bit of a boost. During original MoP - Prot Paladin was good for all PvE content, but not great.
With the changes during prepatch, Prot Pally is looking like it will be great.
So if you like playing Prot Pally, stick with it. It's certainly more than viable
I never played MoP—would I be able to AoE grind like back in TBC or no?
Problem being, will it get picked over blood DK or a brewmaster monk for raids?
Unless you're going for server first, all Tanks are in a great spot for MoP. Prot Paladins have the best raid-wide utility of all tanks with their off heals and CDs, and after the buffs do enough DPS and have enough damage mitigation to be just as viable as Blood DK or BM Monk. I actually think Prot Pally is in a better spot than Blood DK after the changes during MoP classic beta.
Only potential exception to tank viability would be Guardian Druid, which doesn't provide much utility. However with the Heart of the Wild changes, Guardian Druid may be the best off tank since they can pump out a ton of DPS without vengeance. Problem is that most MoP raid bosses are more 2 tank fights, rather than MT OT.
In short though, Prot Paladin is in a great spot and any informed and up to date raid leader would gladly take a Prot Pally.
I guess I have to remember that with 10 man raiding there are way more tank spots open now for raiders.
No, but then again you can stil clear all content with a Prot Pally
Probably not if you're hyper efficient, but all the tanks are so close it doesn't matter which one you bring if you're excelling at it.
