Trying to get into the game

I’ve never played WoW, and never watched anything on it. I’ve heard it was good and I’ve been looking for a game to start and this sounds like just what I want. I’ve heard the first 20 levels are free, but how good of an indicator and experience is that? A subscription based game is a decent commitment and I don’t want to start paying only to find out what it’s like after.

Are you trying to play classic or retail, because only retail is free for the first 20 levels. If you are wanting to play classic you will need the subscription and I would recommend downloading curseforge and getting some addons like questie.

Yeah I was planning classic because I heard the leveling and story were more involved and interesting, which is what I wanted.

Yes play classic anniversary. The free to 20 is only retail but that’s a Disney version of the game without all the original lore

Play classic anniversary.

I would kill to be in your shoes. Dropping into the original version of wow with zero clue what's going on. Discovering the world, the music, meeting other nubs just like yourself and figuring it out.

If I could take a pill and forget everything I knew about wow and start all over again I'd do it in a heartbeat.

You MAY get addicted, or you may just casually log in and level a little bit every few days. Either way you will enjoy it.

The leveling is slow as fuck and not very involved or interesting.

You're waiting for that melting trash fire heap of regret? The meeting for WoD enjoyers is on Thursdays.

Maybe do some research on the product before purchasing it? You never watched videos - cool. Watch some videos.

Goingkilling04 OP

That’s true it’s just so many experiences get tainted by watching someone else experience it for the first time instead of yourself, and I didn’t want this to be one of those cases

That's fair, wanting a spoiler-free experience is how I am about most new games.

I suggest watching something nonetheless, something random like a dungeon run. No context, just people in a group doing a dungeon - you'll get to see what it's like without ruining the first time play experience.

Retail is way too convoluted with bloat and filler fluff designed just to incresse their metrics. You should try the older expansion mists of pandaria classic first.

There are different version of the game. Free trial is accessible only for 'retail' version, which is running the latest expansion to the game. This sub is for Classic branch which is for re-releases of older expansions.

In general low level experience is not very indicative of the game because if you will commit to the game then most of your time will be spent on max level. But you can always use free trial to get general feel for the game, controls and such.

Adding to that, subscription covers all versions of the game (on retail you will also need to pay box price for latest expansion) so you can just buy 1 month of sub and try all versions and decide if this is something for you

Goingkilling04 OP

Yeah I thought the free trial was for classic as well. Didn’t realize it was just for retail.

Pay for 1 month.

If you want to go in blind when you are at the character creation screen take your time and read all the descriptions for the races and classes.

Try on horde and alliance side.

Try a caster and melee

Try a healer

You can get through the first 10 levels in a few hours time per character. You can easily take that first month to do the starter zone for each class then decide which one you want to follow through.

Most of all enjoy the game.

It’s what ? 15$.

Get a sub. Try Cata Classic / Classic Anniversary.

Both very fun right now.

Retail is a dying breed

Yeah classic where where I was headed. And I’ve just never played a subscription game is where my weariness comes from. 70 to play forever (less and less true) vs 15 a month is definitely a transition

You’ll be good bro bro. 15$ isn’t anything

So after 20 you'll start notice the grind. It takes far longer from level 20-30 than 10-20. It's just more of the same you've experienced, but everything gets way more difficult. You'll need to google a lot, use the "correct" addons if you want to do the group contents. To the point you'll become almost religious about the game I'd say, 'cause it's a rabbit hole. In fact, I've done soo much in this game - it feels unreal it's been made by people: but I love it, and always come back.

Goingkilling04 OP

That’s exactly what I was looking for. I love needing to research stuff and play stuff that feels unreal like that

Just don’t be fooled to chase accomplishments over fun and joy. I did that for quite a while and it’s not worth it.

I played for about a year 10 years ago when MoP first came out, It was fun then but I had to stop.

Never played classic so I started a new account a few months ago to join the anniversary realms. It's more fun than I remember. There's tons of resources to help maximize your gameplay or you can just play and learn as you go.

There are people who suck and care too much but if you run into them just put them on the ignore list. I've found there are way more people who are nice and willing to help you learn. I will say it's best to try and make friends to play with, you will enjoy it much more that way.

Cata classic! Do it! You won't regret it + it's not too late since peeps are levelling new characters before the new expansion drops in a a few days e.g. me! Level 44 (/85) and going. I came back after yeeeeears of being away and no ragrets. If you have a duo as well & guaranteed daily playtime together that would be amazing fun. Glhf

Just pay for 1 month and don't set up a subscription. You won't have to worry about a recurring charge and if you're still having a blast with it when the 2nd month hits, put in another month or change your subscription model then to fit what you think you'll want out of it.

OutrageousAnything72

You can buy 1 month and see how it feels?

Goingkilling04 OP

I may end up doing that. It’ll just bug me cause I’m pretty big on being a completionist, so after I buy into it I doubt I’ll want to stop no matter how enjoyable or not.

UggaBugga11

Oh no... RUN!

Cool-Hunt-8795

that will never happen in this game. you’ll get burnout before that.

Frenchy1337

You’re just going to have to leave the completionist mentality at the door for this game tbh. I’m the same way with games and there’s just far too much content in WoW regardless of what version you play. Like dungeons and raids you’ll likely never do. Mounts and pets that are no longer attainable. Or gear/transmogs that you’ll never get for both reasons mentioned previously.

That said, it’s still a fun game. There’s a reason it’s still the top MMO even after 20+ years.

Yeah maybe it’ll be good for me to get rid of that kindset

Classic cata/mop is more beginner friendly than anniversary classic. It’s faster, easier to level, much less punishing when you make a mistake.

Goingkilling04 OP

I didn’t know there were different aspects other than classic and retail. Would you care to give some more detail on the difference?

DozahFrozah

Cata classic, which is transitioning into MoP classic in a week is the base game plus the following 4 expansions now. The level cap will be 90. You get mounts at 20 and they’re fairly cheap, epic mount at 40. Leveling is generally easier as classes have been beefed up over the expansions.

Anniversary classic is just the base game so far and will transition into TBC later this year. You don’t get a mount until 40 and it’s fairly expensive. Epic mount at max level 60 and very expensive. Leveling is pretty slow depending on class and can be punishing if you make a mistake and die.

If I was going for fun, and was fine trying to play either one, which would you recommend.

Perfect time to start at the beginning with the new classic relaunched servers. Choose a class/race/faction you think is cool and get immersed. If you enjoy the game, by the time you get to max level, the first expansion will be nearby and that will be a cool experience for a new player.
