I can't tell you the name of anything my retail character is currently wearing - in spite of having upgraded them all to 671 and crafted/upgraded my own sword to 681.
But I can tell you with great confidence that I looted the Ardent Custodian from a Mistvale Gorilla in Stranglethorn Vale in early August of 2006.
Kang the Decapitator from a Searing Lava Spider in the Searing Gorge.
Freezing Band from a plaguehound in EPL.
Little Timmy’s Peashooter; dropped from a sythid in southern Barrens.
Underworld band from a shadowmaw panther in STV
Shadowfang, while running my little brother through SFK

So true about remembering epics. Granted only a few years ago, but my first was a Gut Ripper on my hc warrior, from one of the beach nagas in STV. Same warrior had a Hurricane drop in WPL at Garrhons Withering. Less useful but I could use it which was cool.
Another fun epic story that the character has was during our ZF clear we were clearing graves talking loot, I said "Pretty sure these can drop Underworld Band.." and as I finished the sentence, Underworld Band pops up. Lucky we had a lock with us and he was stoked 😂

Glowing Brightwood Staff from a satyr in Azshara farming for mats for my robe of the void in 2006. Paid for my robe and the mats for my warlock mount.
I was farming the same mobs for the same reason in (probably) the same year. I got Hurricane. Then I went to check the price on the auction house. Then I tried to check the price of other items on the auction house. That's when I learned that my server was absurdly dead.

This is so stupid, but really true- 2019 vanilla my duo bud and I got the Warden Staff in Desolace, just right outside Shadowprey off a Thunder Lizard. I lost the roll. I’ve had a couple purple drops in Classic Anni and have even had months of raid consumes taken care of by fat recipes/Ace of Beasts but none are as memorable as that first fat drop.

My first equipped epic was a Hurricane Bow. A guy in my guild saw I had a Black Whelp pet on the AH and asked me to trade for it.

Eye of Flame x2 while I did a 23 hour grind of cauldrons in WPL the week before Naxx came out in vanilla. They were worth roughly 30g at the time. I was very sad.
What's crazy is I can even remember guildmates' first epics as well. Our GM got a Bow of Searing Arrows from a Yeti in Feralas. Mine was Stockade Pauldrons in WPL.

I got a Taran Icebreaker off of a random mob near the entrance of felwood some time in late 2005 when I was playing my troll hunter. I was so excited to have found a boe epic, and so bummed to discover it was worth like 25 gold, at least on Stormreaver in that era.
How can I forget it if its never happened lol. I'm not including retail because purples are everywhere. From vanilla to wotlk, hard-core, classic vanilla to wotlk, and now anniversary. I've never had a purple drop in open world. I've seen a few drop in dungeons but never won them. RNGEEZUS does not love me...but then again I always get lucky when farming the rare pattern drops. So eh...

there are no world drop boe epics in retail? Weird, wonder what expansion those stopped
They shifted BoE epics to the raid, specifically to "lieutenants"/mini-bosses, and made the Mythic BoEs actually be BoP for the first few weeks of the tier.
The reasoning was that retail is hyper-competitive, especially at the start of a tier, so it was creating a huge feast or famine problem. The top guilds were spending millions and millions of gold to buy up all the BoEs and transfer them to different servers. Mid-range mythic guilds were having a lot of drama about selling BoEs for the massive profit vs keeping them for progression. Low end mythic guilds were having people skip prog so they could keep doing trash farm groups for the chance at a big payday. Bots and gold farmers were also rampant.
Ultimately it wasn't very healthy for the community and Blizzard wanted players to get the best gear by actually playing the game rather than swiping their credit card.
World drop epics are very useless in retail
Well, a lot of them are useless in vanilla too. This happens to be a solid one.
They are useful when raids launches, which is why people sell BoEs from heroic and mythic for a fuck ton of gold

There are, I don't know what they're talking about. At least in old content there are world drop epics. In no content there aren't outside of raid.
There are BoEs through MoP at least, and cata had raid BoEs. It's just that they're quickly outclassed by heroic raid loot or the next loot tier, which is a lot different than vanilla.
There are but you don't get the same feeling that you did in Vanilla or even TBC. All the world drop epics in retail are hot garbage lol.

I have put literal months of play time into this game since 2019 classic, leveled 8+ characters to max level, and have never gotten a purple BOE drop in the open world.
Remember that mob you couldn’t loot the other day? That was the one.
This is why I have to loot everything.

I killed a mob yesterday that ran away in fear, I thought to myself ”I don’t need to loot it…” but then i started thinking ”what if it drops a BoE?”. And wouldn’t you know it, it was a blue world BoE.

This dropped in LBRS for me once. Dudes said for everyone to /roll even though there was a couple rogues. Everyone agreed to share... I misunderstood this and didn't roll. I thought everyone was doing ms>os. I was healing on paladin.
A few minutes later the guy that one told me to roll because he realized I misunderstood and then I beat his roll lol...
He said "sigh... No good deed goes unpunished." I was a paladin healing. SoD, so my tanking set received a nice upgrade.
Reminds me of when I got the staff of Jordan way back when. I felt so rich and spent way too much time killing things trying to get another random one. I miss having all of that free time to do absolute nonsense lol

This is the only thing I miss about questing, you actually kill mobs.

During the original run of Classic, i got this one on my warrior at level 59 in EPL. I debated selling it but figured i'd just use it to buy other gear anyway so i kept it.
Kept that fucker for like a year straight as a tank before getting something worthwhile to replace it with (For a bit i ran the ZG ring set but went back to this ring after getting the Nefarian ring). Still have it in the bank.

I think i got the black fathom blade or something training either lockpicking or pickpocket or something back in the day on my rogue. That paid for my rare and epic mount.

I got a jeweled amulet of cainwynn in winterspring, grinding the giants there, that paid for mine.
There’s one BoE that’s above that amulet, by something like +2 intellect, but is typically triple the price. So fucking dumb.

Seeing as the last vanilla patch before TBC came out was 1.12, and this item wasnt added until "1.13 Classic", this item never existed in Vanilla and was added for Classic, as it says.
Hah so i looked some more shit up, who knows whats actually true. It also says Teebus is added in 1.13 Classic which is 100% not true. So if this pendant is a real item and has been in the game since vanilla, ive never seen one in my life and am not proud of how much WoW i have played over the last 20 years. Has to be the rarest item in the game if its real cause youll still see a Teebus on the AH every now and then and theres screenshots of people with a Teebus. Theres 0 pictures of people with the Pendant on their character or in their inventory or even in game, and the final post about it is May 2006, while people posting about Teebus still all the way up to 2024.
Seeing as other iconic items from vanilla (for example, whirlwind axe, black war raptor and equivalent mounts, edgemasters handguard) also state they were added in patch "1.13 classic" I think the "patch added" is not accurate. Are you really going to tell me silk cloth never existed in vanilla? Because that says it was added in 1.13 too. The comments aren't written by time travelers the item was available in vanilla.
And to your point of the comments stopping in 2006, TBC started in January 2007 and this neck would have still been alright enough but far outclassed by the new level 70 gear and then nobody really cares for a now weak and invisible boe, where as teebu's is a unique appearance in the game thats shared by no other item, so people would still be hunting that transmog even to this day even if it's useless as actual gear.
Nah you can get the Argent Avenger that has the same skin as Teebus but was blue in vanilla from AD rep. Actually it might have not been AD rep but it was from something that started at LHC iirc.
But anyway, theres still 0 physical evidence this neck ever existed besides a few single upvote posts of people saying they found one.
If it is real it just has to be the absolute rarest item in the game that nobody has actually any evidence of seeing.
This neck has another page for the retail version of wowhead, states added in 1.11.1 "shadows of the necropolis" and it has comments ranging from 2007 to 2014, and the wowpedia page shows added in 1.11.1 as well and a stat squish for the item in 6.0.2 patch notes when the first one happened, all of which points towards it being in vanilla. The drop rate listed shows 20 out of 224 thousand for the highest drop rate on that wowhead page which means it is definitely an extremely rare item and makes sense why so few people talk about it. But at the end of the day, if it truly never existed in vanilla and was only added in classic 2019 there wouldn't be any comments talking about getting it and where they got it 14+ years prior to it being released, nor would it have been affected by the stat squish in 6.0.2 like it was. And the Argent Avenger being the same skin but blue instead of red by definition means it's literally not the same skin because blue is different than red.
