Akira Toriyama was well known to do many homages and insert many Easter eggs in his works. The image on the right is from Star Trek, the original series, which predates Dragon Ball. I strongly believe that Toriyama took inspiration from the uniforms used in that chapter and used them to create the Frieza troops one.
I always assumed it was actually.
0% chance it's not inspired by it, Toriyama was a HUGE sci-fi nerd
Exactly. Plus the guards in the episode (which was called Elaan of Troyius) kinda look like they have dragonballs on their outfit.
Damn I missed that! Even more so
You wanna really have your mind blown? Watch some clips (if you've not seen the episode) and ssk yourself "Does Elaans attitude remind me of anyone?"
...yeah
Edit - Star Trek The Original Series / Elaan of Troyious / S03E13 to help anyone wishing to find it easier.
wow, it's almost identical, and he's kinda like a giant gorilla... basically Oozaru. 2 more similarities (more like coincidences) that I noticed: according to the wiki (sorry I didn't see Grendizer), he came from Planet Vega (2 letters away from Vegeta)... And both animes have music by Shunsuke Kikuchi lol
Oh yeah this is WAY more likely
same chest armor, you're definitely right
Good find!
Looks like it’s a combination of both to me. The example you gave doesn’t have the shoulder pads that give that iconic silhouette. But the Star Trek uniforms don’t have the chest piece that’s contoured around the pec muscles with the horizontal lines across the abs
Yep, I did not know about King Gori until now, which also kind of gives ground for the ape-like transformation. The armour looks like a combination of both, putting them together you get the DBZ one. Also Toriyama put several references and even a character from the original Star Trek inside Dr Slump, so it is a fact that he watched it and was a fan.
Apparently Samurai movies were another big inspiration, especially Toshiro Mifune’s character in Seven Samurai. I can’t find the source now, but I can see the elements sprinkled in. Likely he had several inspirations and melded them all together.
That's the source for Bardock's armor.
To be quite honest, the normal armor is far too generic to attribute to anyone. I don't see any characteristics that really look like they were copied: big wide shoulder pieces appears on real armor millenia before any TV existed.
It most likely is. Toriyama was heavily inspired by American media.
That's wild, I never heard of that but it absolutely looks like it.
Its closer to samurai armor than anything else. Its easier to see it that way when it's black and white like in the manga
It feels like a generic alien armour on multiple things and aesthetically it worked on Raditz. Nice thought though
it was all probably inspired by old Roman gladiator armor, especially given how similar the U6 Saiyans' armor is to it
it's a blend between samurai, spartan and roman armor
Compared to Napa, is Vegeta that short ???
What episode of Star Trek is this from? I don't remember it.
Star Trek 03x13: Elaan of Troyius
To be quite honest, the armor is far too generic to attribute to anyone. I don't see any characteristics that really look like they were copied: big wide and curvy shoulder pieces appears on real armor millenia before any TV existed.
It's just basic samurai armor
omg they look like cheap cosplays
wouldn’t be surprised tbh
Toriyama's so good at taking direct inspiration from something & still making it unique. Hell Dragonball itself started off directly inspired by Journey to the West, & look how different they are now.
No, it's based on Samurai armor.
I guess it’s possible, but there’s not really a heavy resemblance
Really?? It's incredibly similar!
Because they’re both following a Roman Armor design with had a skirt like lower part.
Bingo
Combine the other themes from the Terran universe as well, it’s clearly more Roman inspired, as many things in Trek
(Yes, I’m aware they’re not Terrans.)
Connecting Star Trek to Dragon Ball Z is a little bit of a stretch here, I don’t see anything else in over 50 years of universe building in Star Trek that gives a nod anywhere else to Dragon Ball.
I just don’t think this connection is here.
I've never seen this picture of these costumes
I had no idea
I'm 100% convinced
You should have seen my face while watching that Star Trek episode. Do you know the meme with DiCaprio pointing at the TV? Like that.
buena explicacion
extremely likely
by just looking at the pics, I thought it was some weird dbz live-action version
It's possible. Toriyama was often influenced by western science fiction like Star Wars, Alien and the Terminator.
