Question about Broly's film appearances (canon/non-canon)

I recently rewatched all the films and series since DBZ. To stay as canon as possible (and avoid confusion and retcons), I used the Toriyama Route Viewing Order, which I found here in the sub.

However, what I still don't quite understand is the case of Broly... You know, I remember Broly from my childhood days from an old Dragon Ball PC game. DBZ was still running in Europe at the time and no one knew this character, but I found him fascinating even then – his appearance and strength, plus his green hair.
I digress, when I saw the canon film about Broly, I was a little confused. His appearance, his transformation, everything reminded me little of the Broly I knew from the video game. Even some of the film footage I saw on early youtube here and there portrayed Broly differently.
Presumably, none of that was canon...

My question is, which film is canon now? Is there more than one canon film in which Broly appears?
What is the name of the apparently non-canon film in which Broly appears so powerful (green)?

Edit: I just watched the trailer for Sparking Zero, and it seems that the (non-canon?) Broly is also a playable character there. The one with the extremely green hair, etc.

The one Toriyama wrote is the one with the green pelt around his waist. The character is so rewritten that it's basically Broly in name only

The Broly created by Takao Koyama (from the 90s Z movies) is a sadist who revels in the suffering of others and likes to mock others for the difference in power. He has a unique "Legendary Super Saiyan" transformation that keeps his power growing without limit over time

The Broly created by Toriyama is a nice guy who doesn't like fighting, though he's definitely into friendly sparring and getting stronger. He's also prodigious in that he catches up power-wise insanely quickly, and while it isn't named, he's capable of turning into a Super Saiyan with green hair that's clearly inspired by Z Broly's "Legendary Super Saiyan"

Both versions of Broly continue to appear in video games

Yeah you are right! The one with the green pelt is the one I remembered :)

Tough it's really confusing to see multiple versions of him in the games... Nevermind, thanks a lot

The Broly you refer to is in the original DBZ movies Broly: The Legendary Super Saiyan, Broly: Second Coming, and Bio-Broly. None of those movies were ever canon, but the games prominently featured movie characters anyway and Broly may be the most popular of the movie villains.

The other Broly you're talking about is in the movie DragonBall Super: Broly, which IS canon. You're right that outside of being a really big Saiyan with anger issues, they're not that similar of characters. it seems like Toriyama and Toyotaro wanted to make Broly a recurring character, and felt the best way to do that was to make him more sympathetic than the sadistic and evil monster of the DBZ movies.

Thanks for the clarification! That explains a lot... After reading some reviews I think I will catch up on the first of the non canon broly movies!

There were three non-canon movies about Broly that were made by the anime studio while DBZ was airing. Those movies were Broly The Legendary Super Saiyan, Broly Second Coming, and BioBroly.

Broly was one of the most popular non-canon characters, so eventually when Toriyama was helping with a movie that took place after the Dragon Ball Super anime, it was decided that Toriyama would create his own version of Broly who would be canon.

That canon movie is Dragon Ball Super: Broly. This Broly is inspired by the non-canon version but he is also different in several ways.

That Broly has since also made appearances in the Dragon Ball Super Manga.

Both the non canon “Z Broly”, and the canon “Super Broly” are playable characters in video games like Dragon Ball FighterZ (via DLC) and Sparking Zero.
