I always wondered why the calendar year is so low but we have characters thousands - millions of years old. I think it started with Frieza's family coming to power. They were the rulers of the universe so it just makes the most sense to me. What do you guys think?
As per Daizenshuu 7/Chōzenshū 4, Age is Earth's unified dating system; though, in various regions of the world (like Penguin Village), the Gregorian dating system is used instead. Only Earthlings (and beings familiar and interacting with Earthlings) appear to use the Age system. The only other known dating system is the Divine Calendar, which appears to be used by the gods (go figure).
I doubt it has anything to do with anything other than events on Earth.

Because just like our calendar doesn't make sense on other planets, the DB Earth calendar doesn't apply pretty much anywhere else in that universe.
Makes sense if you apply real world logic. This series doesn't really hold onto real world logic though.
Humans didn't have the technology to travel outside the solar system until Dr. Brief retroengineered the pod engines (skipping over Kami's ship, which was simply alien tech). Why would they be using some kind of galactic standard calendar? Sure, there were a few aliens on Earth, but no one seemed to recognize them as aliens.
No one in space has ever used the Age calendar. In fact, it was only mentioned once in the entire series, when Trunks read Age 788 on Cell's time machine. Caramel Mama used that single date to extrapolate every other date for the Daizenshuu guide books.
I probably shouldn't have asked. Curiosity and reddit don't mix.
If you already have an idea in your head about how something is supposed to work, that's not curiosity. If you were curious, you'd be receptive to people explaining how things work.
Your first response was dismissive. Why would I care what else you have to say? I thought I'd get interesting responses not just a "doubt it".
