While Liberia was founded with the intention of being a colony for freed African Americans, it was not a US colony in the traditional sense. It was established by the American Colonization Society, a private organization, and later declared its independence in 1847. Their history is wild. Basically the rich white Americans thought blacks would never be accepted in the US, so they wanted to deport them and give them their own country. They stole some land and helped them setup shop. The new country ironically used forced labor. Eventually Liberia sold out to Firestone tires in 1926 and gave them a 99 year lease. They built the largest rubber plantation on earth. They were basically dependent on rubber for most of the 20th century. They’ve had like 2 coups and 2 civil wars.. but they are mellowed out and they are low key doing better from a macro POV.

As a Black American from Texas, the number of times that Americans would compliment me for "speaking perfectly English" used to bother me up until I was 25 when I realized that white people have very low expectations for us and something as simple being articulate in your native tongue was amazing to them.
