I just bought a 1998 ford ranger xlt 4x4 4.0L v6 and so far im loving the truck! I was wondering if anyone has any recommendations on maintenance to do right away. Its only got 125k miles and she runs pretty good. Idles a little high anywhere from 800-1100 rpm but starts everytime. Also sometimes when I turn the key it takes a couple extra cranks to get her started in the morning. I was gonna do spark plugs and a fresh oil change, replace air filter and clean mass airflow sensor. Should I be doing spark plug wires aswell? Also there's a clunk in the rear end so im gonna rebuild the diff soon. Thanks!
100% recommend doing spark plug wires when you do your spark plugs.
Love the truck! 125k miles is pretty much brand new. I just crossed 211k in mine. I'm very jealous of that exterior sunvisor. I'd kill for one of those.
As for the high idle, I have a 1999 3.0 and mine idles at 900rpm. I've changed TPS, IAC, filters, spark plugs/wires - at this point, as long as mine is still running and not going crazy on RPMs, I'm just thankful
Will do! Thanks yeah I heard alot of people want the visor so im happy it came with it I really love the look, clear coat is fading on it tho☹️ Is timing chain something to worry about right away or is that usually in the higher mileage?
OHV 4.0s are super durable than the SOHCs they came out with after like 2001-2003.
One way to really tell is to listen-
rattling noise from the rear of the engine when starting up.
Other signs is a check engine line (probably a camshaft position sensor fault) or when the engine starts running like crap.
It wouldn't be a bad idea to slowly start saving for that though. Sooner the better.
Gotcha. So far only noise I hear is the exhaust shields rattling. Very annoying when going through the drive thru lol
When I bought mine, the ball joints were totally shot (I had no idea about cars at the time) so everytime I was turning - it was SO SO loud. Turning in a drive thru was a nightmare
