I really hope that dog just learned how to open the door, or the owners forgot to lock it, knowing the dog can open the door. Otherwise those are some damn irresponsible owners.

As a mailman, I have come to the conclusion that ~90% of dog owners should not own dogs.

As someone who reads /r/dogadvice I sadly concur

Unfortunately I agree 😔 it’s similar with people getting cats without knowing their behavior. I guess I was fortunate to grow up with dogs and cats so I’m very familiar with them but I still mess up sometimes!

My favorite line when I worked for FedEx was, "Why didn't my package get delivered? My dog is friendly."

Yup, I'm sure, just like every dog that's bitten one of my drivers. The drivers had explicit, repeated, permission to use an unable to deliver/release code if there was a dog out.

CityofOrphans

Its actually insane how literally every single owner says their dog is friendly. It makes it impossible to trust any of them at all. And when I say something like "Everyone says that so im gonna be careful" they act like you've just insulted their ancestors lol.

And when they do bite 'He's always SOOO friendly he's never showed ANNNY signs of agression EEEVER in his life!! He's such a GOOOOOOD boy!!

I have a dog who is not friendly to strangers. We have to crate him any time we have visitors. And he doesn't go outside, other than our backyard which is fenced and secure, without a good leash and harness. He's super sweet and affectionate . . . to us. To everyone else, he's a monster. One friend came over to visit while we were in a hotel, so we didn't have his crate. I muzzled him. The friend started petting him, which he tolerated because he's pretty passive with the muzzle on. Then she started to take the muzzle off. I told her, "Don't do that. He might bite you." She said, "Oh it's fine. I'm the dog whisperer!" I'll give you one guess what happened when she took that muzzle off.

I had a lady tell me this about her pitbull. Yeah, it bit me, while I was carrying my 3 month old daughter. Her literal words, "He won't bite."

This is why I have cats. I'll admit I can't handle a dog.

You come to their door when their owner isn’t home, make noise outside, they bark and act defensive at you, you leave. Every day you do this you are training these dogs that that response gets you to leave which is what they want.

My dog is perfectly fine with guests coming in, but delivery men and trucks, yes she knows what your trucks and logos look like, draw her ire to no end. I can’t train it out of her.

CityofOrphans

I think the issue with this comment is that youre vastly overestimating what the average dog owner is like. Do you realize that your dog isn't friendly to delivery people and take at least the bare minimum action to stop your dog from being able to get to said delivery people? That puts you above more than like 60% of them right there.

Bircka

The notion that every dog will attack every deliveryman is not accurate but enough do that it's a problem.

No one is saying every dog is going to love to chase and bite a deliveryman bro. Dogs are also clearly territorial by nature, and some are far more willing to use their bite than others.

Every cat wouldn't give a shit if the place was being invaded by robbers, unless they came after the cat dogs on the other hand.

I replaced all of the lever door handles in our house after our great dane figured out how to meet his child as she got off the bus. Had to use deadbolts after he figured out door knobs a few months later. He also quickly mastered the fence latch and was completely unfazed by the electric fence.

The only thing that kept him in the yard was his desire to be a good boy. I really miss being able to tell him to go get his treats... off of the top of the fridge.

My dog can’t open doors but there was something wrong with our glass screen door’s latch that meant it wouldn’t actually latch and you could just push anywhere on the door to make it open. It took about three weeks to get it fixed and we had to make sure the wooden door was closed so primarily our cats wouldn’t escape while stretching on the door. We weren’t as concerned about our dog because she is very well behaved but all bets are off when she hears her best friend bark, and I wouldn’t put it past her to tear through that door. Thankfully, she didn’t try, and the door is now fixed.

There are tons of irresponsible people everywhere. A couple of days ago, we found two dogs in the middle of an intersection and had to trace their steps a block back to their open gate, and tell their owners they're lucky they're not dead, as I watched 5 cars fly right by them. They were fucking unfazed by it, like I was bothering them or something.

sickwiggins

I know, right? every. single. time I’ve returned a child or a dog the people were borderline rude. “your kid (diaper drooping) was hanging around the intersection.” them: crickets

My dog cannot open the door (she could if she tried, but she doesn't "know" to try). I still keep it locked. The big doors to the exterior of home have knobs, so she wouldn't be able to open those, even if she wanted to.

We used to keep my Saint Bernard in the laundry room when we had company over, as her size intimidated some people. She learned how to open the door during an anniversary party, and she was so happy to meet everyone! 180 pound dog with the zoomies in a crowded house made chasing her a challenge.

They are shockingly silent for a large breed too!

I had a paper route as a young lad, and one house on my route had a Saint Bernard who would be resting peacefully on their upper level deck during the mornings of my delivery. One morning I learned that there must've been a staircase down from this deck without a gate on it. I came to this conclusion when I walked up their property, saw the same pupper in his usual high ground spot, and went to their door to deliver their morning local.

Their upper level deck was a wrap around variety that covered the walk up, so I lost sight of the big borf as I walked up. Admittedly I was in my own world a bit, it being early morning and me being at the cusp of teenagerdom. After I dropped the paper off, I turned around to find said massive pupper standing a few feet behind me. He didn't make a noise as he came down, but he was just standing panting and his tail wagging so he was just saying "hi". Still, my heart did sink for a couple moments.

My dog learned how to open a door on his own. Com caught my whole house off guard since nobody knew why the door was open, but then later that day I watched him open the door right in front of me.

moxiejeff

Most storm doors like that let you flip the handle up 90° to prevent children/pets from accidentally pulling down on them like this.

UnicornFarts1111

Mine has an actual lock, similar to a deadbolt on it. I always keep it locked even if I have the big door closed. I love my dogs and I don't want them to get out accidently and get hurt, or potentially hurt others.

They are nice dogs, but they are big and accidents do happen.
