Those kids now think dances are lame and don’t bother coming.
Those that do play usually do get together on these nights to hang out and play.
Also, they missed the one girl who is crying in the bathroom because she thinks all of her friends (who are in the bathroom consoling her) are mad at her.

One of the biggest regrets I have was not dancing with a girl at my 6th grade spring school dance. At every dance prior, I had always danced with her. Well this time around, I didn’t. Earlier in the night, her friend had asked if I was gonna ask her to dance. I said no. Why I said no is beyond me. I still have the image of her and I walking around the dance line looking at one another in my head. Piper if you’re reading this, I’m sorry!

Had a similar thing happen to me in 8th grade. Evidently a girl in my class was waiting for me to ask her to dance, but I was a huge bag of introversion and social awkwardness and just completely failed to notice.

Accurate in late 2000s
We had current music (I distinctly remember way too much NKOTB), and they played sexually suggestive songs like Wild Thing by Tone Lóc without the school getting sued, but I was absolutely one of those dreamer wallflowers. The tan dot chaperone kept coming over to talk us up, too.
I don’t know if I was just in a bad school or it was a product of the time, but we had rap music and grinding when I was in middle school, from 06-09. No one was slow dancing, just pouring sweat and gyrating on each other like it was a night club.
Not shown: 50-75% of the student body, who didn’t go because of insecurity, issues at home, faux-disdain for the concept/presentation/music/attendees while envying those who actually went, and/or actual disdain for the concept/presentation/music/attendees while envying those who actually went.
Yup, the latter is me, except I didn't envy them. Never went to a school dance, including prom... no regrets and to quote a friend "If I even get an invite to my high school reunion, I have failed."

This wasn't me before the dance but it certainly was me as a result of the dance.
my first school dance in 8th grade,circa 1963, would have had the yellow dots in a row along one wall and a line of orange dots along the opposite wall facing each other. It was a grim stand off.
Maybe this was specific to my middle school dances, but you're missing an entire branch of this ecosystem! The Gymnasium! Where most of the boys spent their time playing knockout and 21 before getting dragged away, much to their chagrin, by the girls when a slow song would come on.
At my school, the gymnasium WAS the dance floor. Where were you holding your school dances?
There was this big multipurpose room that had those walls that folded and could be moved to the side. That opened into our lobby, so it was basically like a giant lobby room, and then the gym connected to that.
Where was this school where girls wanted boys to dance with them? Why wasn't I at that school as a middle schooler?
Haha sorry you were a nerd! Jk. It was a small school, so basically, the girls didn't have much of a choice, so even dorks like me had GFs pretty regularly.

I was the kid who sat in the corner and played gameboy because people suck and I didn't like being around them.
I am still haunted by the face my date made when her chaperone mom hit the dance floor & started waiving the shy kids towards the floor while saying “Come on, we won’t bite”.
I need a color for a combo between green and orange.
Went from orange to purple to red but did not go to jail. The purple stint made all the confidence and that helped a lot being red.

My wife is a HS guidance councilor, and I love chaperoning prom. It's the glimpse of the other side that I've always wanted, but since I'm not on payroll, none of the responsibility. We don't sneak in vodka, but definitely have some wine at dinner before getting there.
Not pictured: Me, standing on my own, looking at all the happy couples, on the verge of crying because I'm still single... then running out of there to escape more humiliation.
EDIT: And also scared of asking my crush to dance with me because, if she isn't already dancing with another boy, all her friends are around her and I don't want to be humiliated / bullied if she were to reject me.
I was the black dot
This was my experience as well... except that it was Hollywood themed. That meant film hanging from the ceilings... film with nude ladies on it. So instead of waiting for a miracle, have the boys and chaperones running around to see who can get more of the film!
I 100% started this by noticing what was on the film and letting the class clowns know. It was more entertaining than the rest of the evening.
DJ one is on the nose. My middle school DJ murdered a women and got away with it for 20 years.
For myself we need the person who was super unpopular and therefore never went to any school dances and instead stayed at home playing video games category.

Our middle school would have the dances at the end of the day on Friday so everyone had to go, basically the same set up though.
Ah! I was that red ball there in '72 trying to bingo my crush list. And yep, I nailed it and more. The hardest one to get a dance with because her partner wanted her for himself exclusively. Well... I managed to steal a dance and never returned her even after 53 years. And why would i go to jail? I was a dam fine gentleman.
Would any chaperone be brave enough to spike their drinks while supervising kids in 2025? 😂

I was the one that went to the classroom playing a terrible movie. Once the teacher fell asleep I snuck out and left school early.
Uk middle schoolers have an area for the kids who are now bored of dancing and have decided to have a competition to see who can slide the furthest on their knees.
The boys waiting for a miracle are actually in a queue waiting for their turn to do a slide.
I'm in the corner sitting on the ground with my hands wrapped around my knees. I didn't want to be there, but I can't be left alone and this is where all the adult supervision is. I glare daggers at anyone who approaches, but more than anything I'm lost and confused. I don't understand how a dance of this sort works; it's too chaotic and disorganized, and I don't know how to pick out the patterns that do exist.
I want to join in, but I don't know how and I'm afraid of messing up.

Shit my middle school dance was like this, until I moved to New Orleans. Then they went fuckin off! Juvenile “Back that ass up” just came out and you best believe they played that shit. Every school dance eventually evolved into scenes from MTV summer break. Shit was wild man.

I'm a middle school teacher and this is not typical now.
It's mainly just kids screaming, talking, walking around, eating snacks.
I go because we are required to do two afterschool events a year as part of our contract. These happen right after school, so pretty easy to for an hour or, make myself seen, and then head out for the day.
Mom of a SN’s middle schooler. Her little class of 5 absolutely destroyed the dance floor the entire time. These kids love music and dancing. They had the entire school surrounding them/hyping them up while having zero inhibitions. It was beautiful to see.

In my middle school in Canada we were making out and touching asses for every slow song, and we danced out asses off the rest of it. No wall flowers. It was awesome

I was forced to go to my middle school dance and the goth girl I had a crush on insisted I slow dance with her. She then told me her dad made her go to dance with boys because no daughter of his was going to be a Lesbian.
