I had the teal one with pokemon blue and my friend had regular with pokemon red. We spent a week and got all 150 original pokemon. Link cable and all. We tried the IR but it realld dident want to work.
I remember getting the IR sensor to work and it felt like magic
I have the exact same! I fondly remember the days of grinding Machoke up to 100 and wondering when it'll evolve.
The best memories
How far we have come,
If you told the 12-year-old me that one day we would be here, I wouldn't believe it for a second.
I'm glad people have so many options to enjoy gaming in their way <3
Gameboy was a far bigger breakthrough and cool factor tbh
I remember us kids hovering around our cool uncle who got the first Gameboy (classic? The grey/off-white one), and watching him show us for the first time what Super Mario is all about.
us kids
cool uncle
Fuck I’m old.
If you’re old enough for the original Gameboy in childhood to be a trigger for feeling old because you were an adult, you already knew before the reminder friend lol.
lmao yeah i remember that magnifying and light addon too so you could play it at night with a "BIG SCREEN" haha
They both birthed an entire handheld market. It's just significantly harder to do that after decades of massive entertainment tech development. The Gameboy certainly didn't have to compete with smartphones.
Yeah, idk, I think the Switch 2 has like 0 magic to it.
The switch 2 is disappointing imo. For a company that always pushed the envelope for innovation, they put less effort into this next gen then they did the Wii U.
They change the console too much and people would've complained that they should've kept the Switch concept.
The switch isnt going anywhere. Its the culmination of decades of innovation to get where they are now. The switch is literally the best bits of every console they have ever made. I expect a switch 3, 4 maybe a pro somewhere but its staying.
Literally every single person I spoke with in real life who games on Switch told me all they wanted from the next console was the same thing again but with a huge power upgrade. Nintendo delivers exactly that and the internet screams “where’s muh innovation!?!?”
I'm not screaming. All I am staying is it was always exciting to see what off the wall idea was going to come out next, so it was disappointing this time was very much like the jump from NES to SNES. You can't deny that considering it couldn't do the heavy lifting sony and Microsoft's consoles could do it was their edge in the competition. At the same time yes, at least they improved the flaws in the original switch.
They've been pushing their innovation through games itself. They literally said they didn't want to change the console too much and will instead do things like Labo, Ring Fit Adventure, Mario Kart Home Circuit where you just buy the accessories and it makes use of the hardware. Which imo is the smarter way to approach it. I don't want another Wii or Wii U.
I debated between a Switch 2 and a Steam Deck. Ended up going with a Steam Deck. I'm very happy with my decision.
I'm thinking steam deck will be my next handheld for sure. Much larger library.
I just need to buy the TV dock, and I'll be all set haha. I can play Rimworld on the go and play Helldivers 2 with my brother when I go down to the beach.
Mario Tennis is goated.
And specifically this version. The best
The balls to make a Mario sports game and not feature the Mario cast for the majority of the game.
What game is that?
Hogwarts Legacy from the looks of it or do you mean from the GameBoy? Then no idea
My bad should have clarified. I meant the device that’s not the Gameboy lol.
I’m also curious to know this
hogwarts
The gameboy game is almost certainly Mario Tennis. The GBC Mario Tennis was SO good, awesome RPG mechanics to it, very fun.
I didn’t even notice the gameboy was on
my last girlfriend stole/destroyed my og purple gameboy w blue, yellow, and all the other games. also all the old pokemon cards.
i got switch on a whim a few years ago and really liked it, lost it in a fire. switch 2 looks awesome
Holy fuck your consoles all die violently.
We've come a long way
Here's to your continued success
Handhelds have really come a long way.
Still have my lime green gameboy color! It’s getting an IPS mod soon.
Love that yellow Gameboy! Did you also get Pokemon Yellow for it?
For me it's OG Gameboy for first. Steam Deck for latest.
What’s the game you’re playing on the switch
Yellow GBC twins! Also my first handheld. I got it with Pokemon yellow and played the everloving FUCK out of that machine. We had a battery budget
Damn gameboy color was the peak of my childhood x) Pokemon, Zelda, Street fighter. So much memories.
This one was sold with the Pokemon Yellow edition ?
what game is that?
Hogwarts Legacy looks like.
GBC was also my first game console along with Pokémon Yellow.
I know backlight takes away from battery life, but I am not going back to having to huddle under the lamps trying to play Pokemon Yellow.
One of the things I had with my GBC was this goofy magnifying glass with the light. If I breathed wrong the magnifying glass part goes down slightly and I have to push it back up.
Oh man I broke mine hiding it from my mom. I was supposed to be sleeping and I shoved it under my pillow into a wall :( no more late night Pokémon for me
It doesn’t make us any younger, but it’s still a lot of fun playing it 😉
Cool!
Wild! I still remember the days when I thought the Sega Gamegear was INSANE. I wanted one sooo bad and couldn't believe it had a backlit display and the graphics it did
That thing ate batteries like you wouldn't believe
Oh i bet 😂 probably took 4 AA batteries at a time and got an hour playtime
6 actually. And the screen is fucking awful. But it got you through playing some Sonic Triple Trouble and the worst Spiderman game I have ever played without the help of the sun or a desk lamp. Good times.
OP what's the game on the GBC?
From Game Boy Color to HD magic — what a beautiful journey through childhood and tech! :D
Is that fuckin Jamiroquai?
What a quality thought provoking post
wow that's cr\azy
Damn lol i had that same gbc! I asked my mom for the pikachu edition one and she got confused and just got me the yellow one 😭😂
OG GB wth Batman and Super Mario Land 2 was mindblowing for a child. Batman was a short ass game but it got a soundtrack to die for, simply fantastic even to this day
Man, those got damn GBCs are probably partly why my vision is so shit today. Probably squinting for hours in all sorts of lighting conditions.. Had/have a lime green one.
I know they had that anglerfish attachment that still didn't even help THAT much... Not that I even owned one. lol.
Somehow the one on the left is better
Great?
Yes people, keep giving shitty nintendo your money, that'll show them!!!
Switch 2 trash
The gameboy was actually portable. Could take that thing anywhere in your pocket AND doesn't look weird while you play it. Lasts hours and hours and can play forever as long as you have spare batteries.
The switch is "portable". Can't fit easily in your pocket and the battery life is garbage. Plus you look like a tool whipping that thing out at the airport.
Nah you just look like a normal person. Only weirdos care if someone pulls out random gaming device at an airport lol.
Wrong. Back in the day you could pull out your Gameboy, DS, or even a PSP/vita and it's small and portable. Fits in most pockets. The SP could fit in the pockets of women's pants.
Pulling out your Switch (which you need like an actual case or bag for) in a doctor's office or an airport, you might as well pull out a laptop. It has about the same amount of portability. You are lying to yourself if you say it doesn't.
26 years and 0 new Nintendo exclusive IPs.
Enoy your slop.
Like
I unironically would take the left over the right. Sliding in a cartridge, its just such a nice experience. And the simplicity of the games can be really enjoyable, too. Actually, you know what. I think I'll grab one from a retro store so I can re-play the original pokemon games on my work commute.
Thats a weird looking SteamDeck.
Why did you get a switch 2?
Because outside if the reddit angersphere it's proven to be a popular device?
Why do you care?
There’s nothing new or innovative about it. It’s the exact same thing with restrictions on the game cards being “key cards” that are basically a key(permission) to download the game. Lame.
I agree, but what satisfaction do you by dumping on someone else's good time?
Not dumping, it was a genuine question, I’m actually interested but have yet to see a good enough perk to pull the trigger.
Why is everyone saying we've come a long way? The left one obviously looks more fun.
The new one looks like a phone with joysticks and a nasty looking 3D game. If I wanna play a game like that I'd do it on my PC.
"NEW BAD OLD GOOD!??"
both bought by mom?
I was thinking the other day how the hell did we see anything on those old Gameboys. And then it kind of blew my mind that I remembered the GBA still didn't get a back lit screen until the SP version.
I remember playing by street light in the car on an original Game Boy. It had to be a game that could idle between patches of light as you never knew when you'd lose vision of the game.
Yeah parents would be complaining if a person was tailgaiting with brights but damn was that ideal to get through a level of super mario land.
Oh yea those were the good old days. And to find out years later that Japan was living nice with the Gameboy Light that came out in 98. Wish we got to see that over in the west.
There's this weird nostalgia associated with like the isolation of one of those systems in the backseat of a car. There weren't that many other distractions aside from looking out your window or chatting with people in the car. You couldn't access the internet in a car. When it was quiet, it was just you and a video game that fit on a cartridge with barely any memory. And it was 2D. I miss getting that enthralled in a game or a book on a road trip. It was beautiful.
Seriously! And the little plug in light for it was a game changer on road trips
About to force my child to go through the same thing on a long road trip.
Careful! You're about to experience how annoying we were blasting those repetitive songs and noises.
I remember getting my batteries confiscated..
I was never allowed to play with sound if my mom was near
Did nobody tell your parents about headphones?
Lmao get out of my childhood
The best was being outside on a sunny day in the grass playing with perfect clarity
You didn't have the light attachment? It plugged into the port and helped you see.
I did, but couldn't use it in the car.
"You're blinding me with that light!!!!" or "lights in the backseat like that are illegal you know!!" depending on how gullible Mom thought I was that particular year...
My parents said the same thing about the flashlight I was using, but the attachment was much dimmer and more directed so they didn't mind it.
I had the magnifying glass with the light attached to it. Unfortunately though we only had 1 but 2 Gameboys and I was the low man on the totem pole (younger brother) and most car rides my older brother was using it.
I have a Playdate and love it, except I barely use it because I need to hook up a book light whenever I want to play it at night. It’s frustrating because I do love it and want to mess around with it all the time, but the extra step of charging and using a book light usually turns me off.
Insane to me they just wanted to be quirky and make a thing without a light.
Blippo+ rules though, actually think it’ll be better on the weird little Playdate than when it comes to Steam/Switch.
Gamegear was so ahead of its time. 8bit color and backlit. Was actually my first handheld, followed by GB color. I wonder why it failed? Yeah, the battery life was garbage, but it had rechargeable accessories.
It was more expensive and also battery use was a nightmare, it also never got the library that Gameboy had.
If Game Gear would have sold more it would have likely had been a closer runner up to the Gameboy with better games.
Not just any GBA SP, mind you, specifically the GBA SP AGS-101, which came out in 2005/2006 in most of the world, more than a full year after the Nintendo DS. Earlier GBA SP Models were frontlit.
I never knew that. I guess by the time I was gifted one for my birthday or Christmas the newer version was already out.
Game Gear was a backlit system but it ate batteries like it was a starving man that hadn't eaten for 1 month.
Keep in mind Nintendo could have made a backlit system but they wanted it to be more conservative on battery use which was a big issue back then. I had both a Game Gear and a Gameboy and I had to use the Gameboy mostly on trips, because my parents would complain about the battery guzzling Game Gear.
Yeah we had an accessory light that sat over your screen and killed your battery! Good thing I had the extra battery pack! It's wild to know some kids might not ever see a non-backlit LCD. I guess you could show them your electric meter, but they're mostly gone besides novelty gifts.
Dude omg the GB advance SP was SOOO awesome. Felt so damn cool opening and closing that thang. The backlit screen was killer. Also sick that you could turn the backlight on and off.
